He was maybe remembering that night in november 76 in san francisco where dr john played it at the last waltz ! He was there too ! 20 years later heheh
I’ve been playing piano for over 40 years and after seeing him at the old Town and Country club in London about 25 years ago, I felt like pushing my piano straight off the end of Tower Bridge into the Thames. Great, great player RIP 🎹😔
It's mesmerising watching someone with such talent make it look so easy. Saw Dr John live in Birmingham many years back and loved every minute. Such a talented showman. R.I.P. to a remarkable musician❤️❤️❤
I love how nobody in the band or audience can believe how good Dr. John is at piano. Neither can I, honestly. Seriously, how the hell was he that good?
@@barryluckhurst1166 Seriously one of the best live performances I've ever heard. I've listened to that version more times than I can count. I actually prefer it to what's on Dr. John's original album.
@@chriswick7987 My cousin used to live there and just when I got old enough to visit she moved! One of my pipe dreams was always to go and study there and finally figure out how to solo hahaha. Some day I will regardless!
Must have been 1981 Mac played at a local bar in Orchard Park, N.Y. Called the South Towner. Anyway I was there standing 8ft from him and his band Performing. His performance blew me right the hell away! I was So Glad So Blessed to be there. What a performance! You Sir are truly missed. Rip Mac
The band and bystanders are in shock❣️ My dad was the leader of a New Orleans street marching band and I swear he’d have been in tears (of joy, of course) if he’d ever heard Dr John play!
The Doctor was one of the invited guests at The Band's final concert in 1976 -The Last Waltz . He sang his heart out that night with The Band backing him to the hilt singing this song 'such a night .' If you have not ever seen the movie The Last Waltz ,then you can't regard yourself as a music lover ...it is exceptionally brilliant with a ' who's who ' of the Rock world performing on stage in San Francisco . Mesmerisingly sublime quality of the highest possible grade .
Love Dr. Johns Such A Night. I created one of my first stage pantomimes to this piece. One of my most favorite pieces. Loved the modernized ragtime of that period back in my days of youth! Ah.....jazz blues ragtime with a bit of funk. RIP wherever you are Dr. John jamming with Gabriel.and the others.
Love the good Dr 👏 and good to see how much fun Eric is having. Perhaps he’s secretly glad Dr John had to give up guitar after he was shot and took up the piano instead 🤷♂️ God moves in mysterious ways 🤟
Outstanding! Thank you for posting. I saw the good Doctor several times in the Bay Area. My favorites were in Marin and at Yoshi's in Oakland where I was just a few feet away. An amazing talent. RIP Dr. John. You are missed.
Holy crap! I haven’t thought about yoshis in so damn long! I saw galactic play there in 2002 while I was visiting Petaluma CA we traveled down to Oakland and the bay to party. What a cool place that was and yes dr John was in a class all his own. I visited jazz fest in New Orleans a couple times wish I could have seen him there
I recorded this whole hootenanny on VHS. This was the first time I had even heard of Dr John and bought a couple of his albums on the strength it. Best Hootenanny ever.......if you can find the whole thing.
Rather humorous to see Mac Rebennack playing a Bosendorfer...great of course. He would sound just as good playing a creaky 90-year old anonymous upright haha.
Always tried to catch him in London eg Albany Empire with Dis Disley, JazzCafe .The Last time was in front of the World Trade Centre when I first arrived in New York as a mature student staying near Brooklyn Bridge .Then there was Central Park ...
the guy played with everybody and everybody played with him. Is that jackson brown at the keyboard? Saw DJ at a small venue in manhattan a long time ago. It was so crowded. Snuck in thru the kitchen, nobody said a thing. Mos'Scocious!

You're missing the point, sir. Clapton was playing his instrument (which is pretty much what he's been "about"all along, whether as the Star or part of the support team, in several bands & under several guises). Musical performances do NOT have to be all about the billing. Sometimes the folks (artists/musicians/whatever) just want to get together & make music.
@@shirleyjhoff9052 Eric was just enjoying playing rhythm behind one of the greatest R'nB pianists of all time. Just look at his smile at the end - like us all, he was just blown away by the good, great, late Dr...
Clapton laughing & shaking his head at the end, says it all. Try keeping up with that boys! Superb...

I know what you mean … 🙄
I do hope that people like Billy Joel and Elton John are looking for talent to mentor …. To be their replacements
So glad i met you Mac . A meeting i will never forget . Such a Night . Miss you buddy
Keep in mind, he was an adult when he started playing piano. He had played guitar until he lost a piece of one finger in gun fight.
Agreed, could listen to his Wrong Place, Right Time tine forever, discovered the boogie woogie Dr in lockdown, do you listen to him

The best ... genius.
Amazing and extraordinary talent. I confess my envy for all those who saw and heard this God gifted man during his lifetime.
Saw him in 1982 in a small bar in Santa Fe. I was six feet from the piano.
I love how nobody in the band or audience can believe how good Dr. John is at piano. Neither can I, honestly. Seriously, how the hell was he that good?
That's one of those, So that's how good pro musicians are. No wonder I'm playing in a pub. I gotta work on my chops moments.
How cool was the Dr doin this on The Last Waltz

Jools and Mac played a great duet in Music Night as the Boogie Woogie Twins.
The best medicine from the Dr. RIP
increible primera vez que veo este extraordinario musico, sin palabras.. esto es oro puro
Loved his voice.
Clapton was a complete gentleman in keeping his seat so the good Doctor could have the spotlight he completely deserved.
Sadly, that`s what some people don`t get.
Best comment
He was an add-on. He didn't have a choice.
Dr. John is incredible on his own. I like EC, but he was superfluous here.
Haven't heard this song in years. I had cold chill bumps the whole way through. Amazing.

The Last Waltz is the best version. It's beautiful....
This is magnificent ❤❤❤❤
Watch all of the musicians in the background smiling during that final solo.

May he rest in everlasting paz.
That Bosendorfer piano never had more fun
I was thinking that...this piano is worth more than I make in years but the Doctor makes it come alive. Beautiful....
They broke the mold after this one. Dr. John added to an already rich music culture coming out of New Orleans.
Love it

Saw Elton John open for Leon Russell. Saw Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, never saw Dr John. Saw Jethro Tull open for Frank Zappa-what an era! ✌️🎵
You must be Joking! - What did Eric add to this great song and performance by a real musician?
To think that.... Maybe one of the last time they both were in the same building when Dr. Played that song was in the Last Waltz with the Band
The brass is a bit too loud, but otherwise it’s perfect. Miss ya, Mac
Good point. And Jools playing that constant high note.on the organ at the beginning half of the song was nasty.
I feel bad for the 5 that gave thumbs down.
Up to 6 by the time I got here. Expectations or something. * shrug * I loved this.
Clapton siempre rodeado de estrellas y robando la plata.
El buen Doctor un capo.
I think Clapton enjoyed this
bliss, he seems far away though. xxx
Mac was the ambassador of NOLA, next in line is Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews?
Rico Rodriguez is playing the trombone too
John wick reppin on the Rhodes!

Oh yeah, you came here with my best friend Jim
Here I am, I'm stealin' you away from him

Sure miss Mac.
It is a song structured mostly for piano a guitar solo just wouldn't fit

It's a piano song, really no room for a guitar solo, it would add nothing
Pretty sure he played on other songs.
Featuring the racist Clapton. The man who at least inspired Rock against Racism.
