How NOT to buy a Volkswagen CC

  • In this video, we inspect a Volkswagen CC purchased on Facebook Marketplace for $1,200 that claimed to have a blown head gasket. However, the car turned out to have a hail-damaged hood and roof, a missing tail light cover, and so much more. Although the car smokes while running, which may indicate a blown head gasket, the smoke smells weird and gross instead of sweet, which is what would happen if the car had a blown head gasket. So today we will try and figure out what is wrong with this 2.0T TSI CC, and inspect the rest of the car along the way.

i bought an identical one and long story short an absolute piece of junk. with only 70 thousand miles it needed a timing chain which included removing the transmission and it was a 7k job. Also a myriad of issues like parking sensor wiring failed and interior was trashed with low miles. and all the tail lights were broken. make it make sense. went back to the auction

It's the same reason people avoid maintenance that cost money money that they usually don't have because they probably got that car on a loan this is why 20-year-old sports cars when you have a clean well maintained relatively stock example of one they tend to be worth a bit because they tend to get bought up by people who can't afford the maintenance on them

One thing I've learned in the handful of cars I bought. It 100% benefits you financially and mentally to judge the living hell out of the person selling you the car. Ask some basic questions about the car, do they have any clue how a car works? Look at how they dressed to meet a stranger, did they clean up a little or are they there in pajamas? Did you go to their house to see the car, what sort of shape is the house in? Do they just seem like an idiot in general? Is it a backhole dealership with tons of totaled mk6 GTIs, ccs, and other German cars in the back in south Atlanta where the only nice car around is driven by the guy selling a low milage mk6 for a questionably low price? Is that car dirty? Etc. All of these are important and not at all very specific questions that everyone should ask.
Also never buy a car from someone who smoked weed in the car. They're certifiably dumb. I enjoy as much as the next person but be an adult and smoke outside.

Daughter purchased program car, a lease return. She was told it was an 1990 model but she never looked at the title...it was older...with a v 6 motor...the car was built around that motor! It was a full sized sedan rode comfortably. Purchased with 55k on it if that's believable. Not dip stick for auto trans. When it got to around 80k told her she needed to purchase an Asian auto or the vw was gonna become a money pit. Then she got a campaign letter about her sunroof needing factory authorized repair. So even though the car had been thru a recent hurrican where local areas were flooded and her car remained dry she went into the nefarious claws of the local VW dealer in daytona, then located on west end of Mason Ave. They kept the car for repairs...then called told us the huge over sized battery that's was in great shape all of a sudden died. So we purchased a battery from local parts house at 1/4 the cost of what v.w. wanted and went on our way. Within days it rained and her car had 4-5" of water in it. Back to the dealer they said it was not their fault..😮 though no leaks were apparent until after they worked on it as a factory recall. Few weeks later she said dad check under my car it smells like hot grease...after inspection revealed a nice clean case cutter slice across the outboard CV joint bellows passenger side allowing grease to go everywhere. As a master ASE mechanic diesel gas med & heavy truck from experience knew C.V. boots never tear across bellows usually in the valleys...daughter called vw for bellow kit.
Nope only new half Axle at ruffly $500.00.
So to save her removed and replaced with after market for like 1/5th of quoted price...could not find a boot kit in our area. That sealed it. She traded for a Asian car and is still driving it today. German cars, unreliable when compared to asian cars. Plus require speciality tools, factory is slow to share pertinent information for repairs parts too expensive...their not the peoples car. They are for gear heads who live to twist wrenches or for folks who get a swelled head spending money on lots of German maintenence. Wouldn't own one if I won it happily sell it asap! Sadly VW lost its original mission statement years ago...
Ferdinand & Adolf must be rolling in their graves....😢

I've had the oil consumption/smoking problem on two of these engines from 2009. Try doing a piston ring soak with equal parts mystery oil and berryman B12. Soak it for a good 2 or 3 days while working on some of the other things. It's going to smoke like crazy once you put it back together, so take it outside (on a windy day). Good as new. Except for the rest of the car of course.

turns out I have seen the "how to check timing chain" video back in 2021 as soon as I bought my mk6 GTI, and I didnt drove for a week till get the funds to replace it! it was 6.something! some people dont take care of their cars, its crazy, but your videos have helped me a lot! thank you as always, and im watching this for fun lol,
also my car is burning oil but I havent find the reason yet, using liquimoly 5w40 and adding 1L every 1300 miles, need to open the engine but not that good yet! any clue? no leaks, no codes, no wet oil on exhaust, just regular dry burnt oil on exhaust, no coolant being burned or smelled (did waterpump too) its literally just burning and no clue where, also from TX (150k miles stock engine, bought it at 108k)stock turbo from the factory still (might be turbo??), brand new PCV and i replaced 3 times already within 40k miles just to be sure it works, they were all good!

For the burning of the oil. If there isn't much blowby in the cylinders, then the pcv system might not be the problem. The valve seals would be my next guess. If it was not the turbo seals letting oil burn up inside the turbo exhaust side. That car has def been hot rodded around. IMO

Good to know about the turbo/oil. I just did my 2013 chains this weekend, and noticed a small amount of oil in the pipe. I cant recall seeing any oil in the pipe of my 2014 CC when I did its chains two years ago. So naturally I feared the condition of the turbo on the 2013 is bad (138k).... but a small amount is ok? I'm relieved. Thx

Just check your PCV/oil separator parts first. They are plastic and fail after 10 years or so, and aren't that expensive. The oil in the intercooler can come from that. Or the turbo can be worn.

Could the inner tyre wear be caused by the rear inner control arm bush wearing?
I'm wondering if the flex due to this wear might cause the front tyres to toe out when under load (high speed cornering, etc)?
Your opinion on this is appreciated, as most large VW's - Passats, Arteons, CC's, etc - all tend to wear the inside front tyres, regardless of regular alignments.
