  • This vide is not only about a trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, but also about defining who we are by the activities that we conduct. This is a trip about adventure, community, solitude, self-sufficiency.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon is 104 miles of pristine wild river, one of the few last free flow sections of wild water left in the West. Thanks to the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return that was designated on October 2nd, 1968, in the National Wild & Scenic Act.
This is one of the most sought-after permits that you can land each year, and people try for decades to score the coveted ticket to rider. We were that lucky crew last year; we landed a prime date to float in normal year but this was not a normal year.

I think that one of the BIG reasons that groups don't collaborate these days is because it is against the permit rules to recruit on internet message boards. Read the permit rules. Finding people to join your permit on the BUZZ is technically a no no! Take care and have fun...

Nice trip! But I'm baffled why western boaters don't wear helmets in an oar rig. Is it a pride thing or is it ignorance?
As a guide with 45+ years experience all over the world, I've seen all kinds of sh!t go down on the river. Things escalate out of control quicker than you think.
All it takes is getting surfed in a hole, losing control of your oar, getting wacked in the head, and suffering a traumatic head injury. Or getting your downstream oar stuck on a rock and violently ripped from your hand and whacking your unhelmeted passenger (or loved one) in the side or back of the head! Why risk ruining everyone else's trip because you're too proud or arrogant to think it won't happen to you?
Have you ever dealt with a THI in the wilderness? I have, and thank God that we had radios to call for help! That person still suffers from the experience and requires 24/7 assistance for the rest of his life.
Sorry for the rant but it pisses me off to see people being ignorant of situational awareness. You wear a PFD as part of safety protocol, why not a helmet?

That's a pretty heavy generalization about western boaters. I was on this trip and most of the people were wearing helmets in most of the big rapids. People have different tolerances for risk including getting on the river to begin with. On this river, at this time of year, and at this flow a dry suit would be further up the risk mitigation list than than continuous use of a a helmet in my perspective, but many people don't wear those. If this pisses you off, wait till you hear about motorcycles. Your mind is going to short circuit. At least you got to tell us you were an very experienced guide, that usually makes guides happy 🙂

@@de231 It's not a generalization of western boaters, it's fact. And I won't stoop to your level of snide remarks. Have a great day!

You don't want to boat with me then that's for sure. There are times when I don't even wear my PFD....(Gasp and dramatic pause)....I have even swam in the river without one. Like from one shore to the other at a camp. If you are typical of non-western boaters then I am hope to God you stay wherever you are.

I want to get to the Middle Fork Salmon and the Big Horn Crags so bad! I study maps like people read books and can't wait until the kids get a little older for these trips. Fortunate to be so close to Bruneau-Jarbridge, Owyhee, Snake, Payette, Salmon and Boise rivers. Definitely want to get up to the Lochsa and Selway in the massive Selway-Bitterroot Wildeness.
