Yianni has a trash style USA wrestling has been trying to get rid of for years. He's gonna continue to lose if he can't create his own offense because his style is boring. Sry but it's the truth. Funk/defensive wrestling is boring. Holding on to ankles for dear life isn't going to grow the sport and Yianni will continue to be on the wrong side of calls and rule changes his whole career.
Okay so I'm going through the rules to try to figure this out. "No challenge can be requested after the end of the regular time of a period, except when the points are added to the scoreboard after the referee’s whistle or in case action occurred just before the time is over" So the challenge was requested after the time expired, and the points were posted at 34 seconds. So according to this clause, the challenge shouldn't have been allowed. Let's go to the next. "The coach has 5 seconds from the time the questioned score is posted on the official scoreboard to request a challenge." The coach took about 34 seconds, so he shouldn't have been allowed to challenge based on this clause either. What am I missing? Why was this challenge allowed to happen?
I'm hoping for a third match, mostly because these two are so fun to watch. If it doesn't happen, then I'm happy for Zain for making the team and I'll support him all the way. He really turned it on this tournament and I know he'll be a force at worlds!

I have to agree that this was an incorrect result. The score was posted at 34 seconds and Retherford's corner did not challenge within the time frame required.
The move and subsequent action continued that entire time. They challenged within the required time from the end of the sequence, which is when the time starts.
I can see the case for a 3rd match. I don’t think Zain gives af if he has to; both of these dudes are in the zone and ready to roll. I’m happy and confident with whoever gets that World Team spot in the end. Man, this weight class is pretty deep.
See a case. The rule says u have 5 seconds to throw a brick not a fucking whole min. They straight up robbed yanni. And completely disregarded the rules
I'll just say it, Yianni is so good at exposing from the crotch lift and variations of that chest wrap that I don't think refereeing as a whole has caught up to it.
When are people gunna get smart and add an overtime in freestyle? Also, make it a point if you lose a coaches challenge on the second challenge or the match. The first challenge should be like a “warning” or the only freebee. As a huge PSU fan, I would have loved to see an overtime and a legit win for Zain.
This is just horrible. See Tyler Nicholson's breakdown of the rules, below. If Sanderson had thrown the brick within five seconds of the disputed points, they could roll it back and look at it. If they changed the score -- which they did -- Yianni still has time to try to score go-ahead points. This was a travesty.
relying on Yianni, or anyone, to score points with 5-10 seconds or less is pretty bold. Nowhere near a correct call for exposure and that's how the match would've ended anyway, not being allowed to challenge after the match ends is the worst rule I've ever seen other than NFL kicking off shorter distances than college football
Zain initiated both rolls in the beginning. It’s a really tough call, but I think he initiates the move at 6:32, and Yianni rolls through as soon as he feels exposure. He doesn’t hook the ankle after the controversial exchange so i don’t get how you get 4/2 out of that exchange. Regardless, Zain shouldn’t have been able to challenge at the end.
Zain got screwed at the beginning. 4-0 or 4-2 Zain to start the match. Crazy to score 4 to 4 when Zain is the offensive wrestler initiating the takedown.
@@darron614 I agree. He should've been a bit more aggressive and trying to push for a ankle pick. They're simple moves, but tough to get at this level, but they work from elementary school to college and Olympic level.
I think a lot of people miss the fact that this was reviewable by the refs, regardless of whether the brick was thrown or not. Right after the 2-2 exchange, there was action for position that could not be stopped, right through to the end of the match. So that action allowed the :45sec old 2-2 exchange to be reviewed at that point...
The refs cannot go back a full minute like that, and the refs didn't request a challenge. The brick was thrown and instead of this match being the hand of 2 great wrestlers it was in the hands of the ref. There is just not a way to watch match and be happy with the way it was officiated.
the brick has to be thrown within 5 seconds of the movement in question period. Then the ref waits until the end and reviews. You cant make up your own rules
nick e I see what you and Luke are both saying with regard to when the brick was thrown. I was at the match and it was not clear if they were reacting to the brick, or chose to review it themselves regardless of the brick. I’m not sure if the rules allow that, or if that’s even what they chose to do... I also really don’t think either wrestler was in a position to adapt strategy based on the assumed score during the last 45sec of the match. Either way, I agree that with this much on the line, it deserved a third match. It robbed the fans and the ability to really see who deserved a place on the world team. I think the rules are flawed when they allow a regulation score tie to go to criteria. It should have been OT or a third match

Terrible scoring. I used to ref matches and even I wouldn’t mess this match up as bad as they did. Yianni should have won. And he would have won the third match as well as making sure to keep it out of the refs hands.
