Are These Albums Unlistenable or Works of Musical Art

- Have you ever questioned why you have some of your albums? Every time you play that particular album you can find no musical value in it. Then you watch a video or read and article and someone is praising how great it sounds! What are you not missing? Is that a piece of musical art,, an artistic expression? You tell me.

Good topic Steve. I've still never heard Metal Machine Music but I suspect I would enjoy it more than the chart stuff they play at my gym. From your clip it sounds like something that might be good at low volume at 2am when you have insomnia.
Wow, sad to hear about the musical choices at your gym James, that is rough lol. I can see your point about playing this low at 2 am. Kind of like white noise. Have you ever heard Sleep by Max Richter. It is gorgeous music but made to relax and put you to sleep. I have used that a few times and it works.
wow... thanks for the plugs, Steve! 2 for 2. LOL.. "Radio Wasteland - Unlistenable music for everyone!"
One stop shopping for everything you can’t listen to. Pop on in and get your own Swans album! We also a complete assortment of Yoko Ono albums to make you wish you never bought a turntable !
MMM - the only album that might be guaranteed to change your mood if you listen long enough - I get real edgy when I listen. Side 4 is a locked groove, which is just fantastic. The Godz - well the clue is it was on ESP, right? I don't mind it, but then again, I have like at least 20 Jandek albums. Don't know Jandek? If not, let me know when you are done with that rabbit hole.
Someone just said try Jandek if you want to listen to something really unlistenable lol. And then you have 20 of his albums. Now I’m worried about your sanity Kris
Big Lou Reed since I was a teenager in the 70s. When MMM was released I really wanted it but could not afford it, the cover was soo cool I thought. A few weeks later it was in the bargain bin and got it! Went home, put on side A and thought "wow, cool intro!" Waited 5 minutes, still same going on. Moved the needle, yes, still the same. Side B, C and D still the same :D Went back to the record store and the guy said to me "I knew you would come back" with a big smile on his face 😂
In case you have missed it you really need to read Lester Bangs review of it: "It is the greatest record ever made in the history of the human eardrum. Number Two: Kiss Alive!"
LMAO on the Lester Bangs review, too funny. What a great story, that was hilarious. “I knew you would come back”. Too funny. Let’s call it challenging music
Thanks for the advice.
Eric, it’s the least I can do for the VC
Oh my goodness!!!! What else can I say??? I do feel nostalgic seeing your old house. Have you sold it?
Melinda someone gave us an offer on the house in 2 days after a nice little bidding war so we did well. I really miss it, we had some great updates and had a lot of room. Still I see my grandson often and he always comes running to me so what more can I ask for in life
Hello Steve; A video on experimental music, electronic & folk. LP's like Lou's Metal Machine Music, BeefHeart's Trout Mask Replica, The Godz Contact High on ESP-Disk, the Mothers Freak Out & the Beatles Carnival Of Light taking avant garde beyond the stop sign of sound. Going to a musical universe that Yoko could have only screamed about. Influenced by the works of Lamont Young, John Coltrane, & John Cage. " A different kind of video. " Tina & Pat!~
Yoko Ono, I’m not sure if I’m brave enough but then I did handle Godz. That is a very interesting thought. Some people love this music, I want to know why. I just have to see if my sanity is good enough to do this. Thank you for the suggestion! You two have a great week
I haven't listened to metal machine music in a long time. I used to like it.
Jeff, I just am not surprised that you like MMM.
Great video Steve. To me this correlates to a few statements I’ve made before. I think sometimes there’s a snob aspect involved in nonsense like this. There will always be those turds that will tell you how you “just don’t get it”. If you like it, great. Kind of like people who only listen to indie bands because they don’t want to be “sheep “ listening to the Stones or whatever. Indie bands can be awesome, but if you suddenly shit all over them if they become popular, then maybe you’re the “poser”.
What a great point and I do agree with you. Some folks just want to think they are a cut above the rest and get what they want artist is trying to say. BS! lol
Hi Steve. When I was in the service I spent the night in a Greyhound station and an airport! At Christmas 🎄 time 😄. Highly underrated. Interstate people 😊.
The Lou Reed sounded a lot like some cars that drove in for repairs when I wrote them up 😊. Easy money 💰
Great way to spend Xmas Greg and to your point you do have the obnoxious sounds. I’ve spent a few nights in airports but now when you did, that would suck
I can see myself sitting through the Godz album (that cat song is too funny), but Lou Reed - nah. Not possible. Fun video!
Someone wrote that his two cats were sleeping quietly and then the cat song came on and they woke up and began to fight. That is hilarious Dave
Mike from the past. He was so cute when he was young. Curiosity got me to buy MMM too. How bad could it be I thought. I don't mind it actually, but I don't need melody, musicality, singing, rhythm or any of your other musical conventions. It's a good one for doing the dishes. Godz sounds like a classic comedy record. And who doesn't like a laugh Mike? Fun tunes. Cheers...Mike
I think MMM on low would be good to nap too, white noise or maybe black noise in this case Mike. Maybe I should get real daring and try a Yoko Ono album. I’m not sure if I have it in me to do that though.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I’ve actually got 5 or 6 Yoko records Mike & they’re great! They may not have made sense back then but in retrospect she was a huge influence on lots of female punks singing style like X-Ray Spex, Slits, also people like Kim Gordon & of course the Riot Grrl scene.
You could just play the Lou Reed at low volume and think of it as ambient music.
Jasper, I totally agree with you, kind of like white noise, or maybe in this case, black noise
I collect the ESP Disk label and that Godz LP is missing for a reason lol lol The members of the band worked at the ESP Disk office for Stollman the owner which had a lot to do with why they were able to put out LPs.
That explains a lot Dave, I couldn’t see how anyone in their right mind would spend money to record, produce and send this out.
great video Steve , we all that record of why did buy this ? I like Lou Reed better than than the Godz . but like art it's in the ear of beholder
Yes so true, ear of the beholder lol. Agree on MMM being better. You can play that in the background. Godz is just grating!
I watched this a few days ago. Just getting around to commenting. Art is in the eye, or ear, of the beholder, they say. Unfortunately to this beholder those were pretty unpleasant noise!! 😵💫
lol, most agree with you but some pointed out this was tame to some other groups. I see no purpose in that type of music Andy
I can't find ether of those records for a reasonable price. I will keep looking. You made this video just to make me go broke. I drove past the place where the K Mart that you used to work at in Warren today.
Hahaha Martin. I think you would enjoy MMM to p,any at various speeds. Yes these would be perfect in your collection.
I have Metal Machine Music and have listened to it (back when I was in high school). It's a challenge. I heard and interview with Lou sometime in the early 80s where he said he produced the album to punish RCA. Unless they did what he wanted, there'd be a Metal Machine Music 2 and Metal Machine Music 3. I have a free jazz album, live in Moscow - it's a 3 record set! That was pretty hard to listen to. Some Phillip Glass albums take a certain amount of fortitude to get through.
lol, Do what I want or pay the price. Working in the entertainment industry Darrell you no doubt ran in to a lot of people like that. You have to really have strong will power to deal with some of these people. I was thinking I could try a Yoko Ono album but I’m not sure I am strong enough to handle that
I tried listening to MMM in the early 90's. I stopped way before the end of the first side thinking life's too short to be spent on this. I've never listend to it since and now i KNOW life is too short to spent listening to it.
Pasi
What a great line Pasi, life is to short to be spent on this. Well said my friend.
Reed was composing a sheet metal symphony for an industrial orchestra, kind of admire his vision and sheer chutzpah, I have no desire to subject my ears to it any further though, much less sit through all four sides. Cheers Steve
You do have to take the Reed album in little doses but it is a head scratcher. It was his way of flipping off the record company and try to get out of his contract Doug
Ok, so I’m watching the video and both my cats are laying down asleep and the song comes on that sounds like cats doing whatever the crap they are doing and my cats wake up and start fighting each other! No joke!
Omg that is too funny Kendall. So those cat sounds were not about having sex, it was about fighting. Now we know. That hilarious my friend
Great video, Steve.
I really like Lou Reed but I can see where his voice or songwriting could rub some people the wrong way. Metal Machine Music is hard to get through for me and a whole different animal.
Lulu sounds like a masterpiece compared to this crazy album.
Haha Chris. Godz , what the heck. This was fun to do though it makes me wonder about my spending habits ! Now I finally know about Metal Machine Music. I also now it’s hard to dance too
Hi Steve, i don't have either of these two albums and if i did i would take them to the shooting range and totally destroy them. I have heard both albums in entirety, and i have to say they truly are unlistenable. They make the David Soul self-titled album sound great. If I owned these albums, I don't think I would tell anyone or let anyone see or hear them. But everybody to their own taste. Take care and hope Kat comes back.
You are a braver man than I am Steve.........Take care.
lol Peter, sometimes you just have to see what makes something so bad. I use to eat at poorly rated restaurants just to find out why haha
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Yep, you are right. I have gone to poorly rated restaurants just to see how bad they were and in most cases I was sorry I went. But if you don't try you don't know.
Metal Machine Music Is A Hot Mess ... But it's a fun hot mess.
David, I always struggle when I find an album is hard to dance to. This is one of them!
I preferred the second one but won't be adding either to the wants list...
Good call on bypassing both. They would not have done well on your keeping album in the collection series Dale
MMM is the only Lou album I do not own, and I really should get it. I have streamed it, and I am sure I wouldn't listen to it more than once. But, the completist in me needs to have it. IMHO, it sounds better than the Godz!
Brian, it’s okay to not have one album, you can do it haha. I actually have never seen this before so I had to give it a try. Not easy to dance to
MMM is more of a statement than anything. One that can be enjoyable on occasion but probably not your everyday listen. If you ever do decide to let go of it, please do let me know, been looking for a copy.
I have had a few mention that they are looking for this album. I plan to keep it around for awhile but eventually I may move it out. I should probably just say something on my channel when I do purge items
its all in the ear of the beholder. i believe MMM was deleted the day it was released. i have owned trout mask replica for over 40 years. i still ask my self ,why?
lol Bruce, I had Trout Mask for years also, listened to it once a year to see if it clicked, it never did. After the flood I said never again
MMM was a hugely significant release, and I'm not saying because I think it's anything great or excellent. But it was influential. Perhaps we'd never have Sonic Youth or other similar acts without its release. I've listened to it once. Not all at once. But one side at a time with lots of space between listening, as recommended by Robert Fithen. (BTW I love Sister Ray) I don't own it. Yet. I will buy it one day, listen to it one more time, and then proudly keep on a shelf. Something truly unlistenable, check out Thurston Moore's release with Graham Moore. Graham's side of the record is listenable. Thurston's side not so much so. Never heard of Godz before.
Godz was new to me, that was a little grating and confusing but I’m sure they had a great time. That Thurston Moore album sounds horrible Richard, I think I shall just not bother seeking that out.
After that Lou Reed many metal albums will be easy stuff to listen. :D
That cat album!?! Oh my...
mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
Yeah, the cat song was crazy Mr Finglish. I guess they worked for the record label so they were able to put that album out. Pretty bad stuff my friend

Part 2: Jandek, early Merzbow, late Skullflower, early Peter Brotzmann and Yellow Swans DO IT 😂😂😂😂
What do you mean, Jandek?
@@alanginger282jandek is gonna be more difficult than the GODZ for many. Especially the early off time stuff
lol Shawn, no doubt these albums are tame to your taste! I tried just an early Swans album, I just didn’t get it Jandek sounds like it would be hard to dance to! I have a thing for melody, I just kind of enjoy it.
OK, Professor...you spend good money on some of the most inexplicable shit, LOL! Although in all honesty, I have never heard either one of them, but now I"m curious, particularly about the Gods - this stuff is intriguing. THe Lou Reed not so much....but we'll see....I suppose art is in the ear of the beholder, right?
Yeah, at times I just have to ask myself, why is this soooo bad. I have gone to restaurants with real bad ratings just to find out why. Enquiring minds need to know TC!
Hi Steve! Well if you decide you can't stand them, you can always send them to me. I would love to find an OG of Metal Machine Music. I've actually had the CD displayed on my last few videos. Is it art? Well, it's a big middle finger to everybody and everything, but to me it has its place as ambient music. Like drowning out the moron downstairs. The Godz are pretty awful, but I dig the ESP label. BTW, just as you were about to play MMM, CZcams cut to a Third Eye Blind commercial, which I think is much worse than these.
Haha on the commercial break, how dare they Michael. I always think of Ambient music as being very relaxing and peaceful but if that works for you Michael, god bless lol. It definitely was his middle finger being given to the man. I am not familiar with ESP label Michael but it is not surprising that you collect it.
This was fun I just wanted to add that Double CD Lou Reed Metal Machine trio live (rare?) is a lot better, dont remember Godz.....
Metal Machine Music live, people paid money to see it. I had not heard of that Hasse.
Hi Steve! Are you finally settling into the new place in CO? That Lou Reed thing should be thrown around like a frisbee! Terrible. Godz is equally horrible. My ears are really hurting now.
Did Colton listen to the cat song? One of my listeners said his cats were sleeping quietly and then that sample popped and they woke and began fighting lol. What an interesting song if your a cat Mike
Metal Music Machine does nothing for me and I am a huge LR fan. I suppose it would fit into the right setting, perhaps a horror movie sequence. 😱
I guess MMM is basically him flipping off the record company. Do what I want or I’ll give you more of this. It was interesting to listen to, call it a novelty album Mark
Hi Steve. I can appreciate the Lou Reed expressions. They sound a bit like white noice, nothing out of tune or purposefully so out of tune it hurts one’s ears. The Godz is a little too demonic for me. But hey somewhere there’s an occult who is enjoying that record as background music to a sacrifice 😂 😳 🫣. Lou’s experimental attempt sounds like nursery rhymes compared to Godz. Cool thread!
Yeah, Godz was rough. I guess they worked for that record company. People must have been taking a lot of acid there. I wonder if I could handle a Yoko Ono record, not sure about that .
ha ha....I always wonder about the critics who give records like this a thumbs-up. I feel sorry for them - so desperate to prove how enlightened they are. Seems like I read somewhere that Lou said MMM was produced as a contract-breaker....he wanted out of his contract with RCA, so he puked out MMM. Or maybe it was the last record in the 5-record deal. Either way, it worked. And Lou was able to look down on people who didn't get it for the rest of his life. lol
MMM was Reed revolting against the record company. The goal was to make something that was unlistenable. He did well. And to you point a few people said that they could understand what he was trying to say with this musical piece. Reed must have been rolling on the ground laughing Randy .
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 This all reminds me of John Cage. "4′33″ is a modernist composition by American experimental composer John Cage. It was composed in 1952 for any instrument or combination of instruments; the score instructs performers not to play their instruments throughout the three movements." I have no doubt that if Cage put out a recording of this piece of work, it would sell. P.T. Barnum said it best! lol
Nice video I would probably kill my self if I had to listen to 4 sides of Reeds album I will never understand people who say this album has any meaning or significance at all It would be in my trash!!!!
Dave, music, art even books can be so subjective. Somethings appeal to the masses and then we have a few items where only a few like it. Makes you wonder if they are just saying they like it to say they are more knowledgeable than the rest of us
"A work of musical art..."
Who cares?
I have never listened to Mr. Reed's MMM, not even a couple of seconds.
Why should I? Because some goofus who inhabits some lofty chair in the upper echelons of Music Critique has called it a "work of art"... the same way that a bunch of goofuses elect a certain album to win a Grammy award for being "The Best Album of the Year"?
No thanks; I would rather spend my time listening to a greatest hits of Fats Domino.
By the way, Lou Reed is (my opinion) one of the most over-rated musical "icons" of rock-and-roll history.
Hi Jeffery, I guess that is what makes things like, music, art, even books so interesting and controversial, people have so many different reactions to it. Sometimes I do feel people are being pretentious by saying how great something is just to make themselves look better. It all comes down to enjoy what appeals to you and don’t worry about the rest
I had the unfortunate experience of seeing Machine Metal Music live. (Opening for Focus). Garbage. Noise.
Wow Robert, did you know what you were getting into. It actually sounds like it would be quiet boring
Both those albums are completely garbage. Anyone that says any differently is a total liar.
They definitely are hard to dance to. Not for me but it was interesting to sit through the whole thing and be happy when it was over
M.M.Music i think was a joke; possible reaction to 'nice' easy listening music tht dominated 70's radio. O.m.G. the cat part was. Funny.🥲
Hi Adam, Reed was trying to get back at his record company. He told them he would put out a second and then a third volume if he didn’t get what he wanted. Got to love working with a person like that! One person wrote his two cats suddenly started fighting when that cat sample came on lol. Guess they understood the lyrics!
