I'm a recovering alcoholic, it's been almost 10 years sober. I think that there should be more of these places/facilities worldwide. This would have helped me out in the beginning. I actually went through, the process of becoming sober by myself. I didn't have any seizures, but I did have some wicked withdrawal symptoms. At my peak of drinking, I was drinking 6 to 8 beers & a half a bottle of whisky per day. Here in Australia, I don't know of many places/facilities like this. I think that it's also ran by the NHS or government, is really amazing.

I have never smoked and drink alcohol very sparingly and only on special occasions (yes, I know, a real Goody-Two-Shoes!) but I think this kind of clinic is truly special and I hope this scheme continues to expand nationwide. People get into all sorts of problems for all sorts of reasons - there is no dress rehearsal for Life after all - so if we can rescue people like this who are on the extreme edge, we should. Thanks for this video Joel. It reminds me AGAIN how lucky we are to have the NHS.

This broke my heart 💔but also gave me great hope for the future and NHS. I am trainee therapist/counsellor and one thing that I have learnt from my training and own personal experience is that so many individuals who become alcohol/drug dependent have underlying issues such as physical pain, past traumas (childhood abuse, SA, DA, poverty etc), mental health issues, current trauma or a combination of these. If we all help to abolish the stigma surrounding mental health, substance abuse etc and talk about them. We can then take actions such as this rehab centre and potentially save 10,000's of people every year. To all of you that have reached out, asked for help and received help.....you are amazing! 🙏much love to you all ❤ Also much love to you Joel and your family from UK.

It took me over 25yrs and countless detox's before i managed to get my life back together. I was totally dependent on alcohol and was unable to function without it. Just at work alone i was drinking up to a litre bottle of vodka a day, i used to keep sneaking out to have a quick drink throughout the day. When i would go shopping i'd buy a couple of cases of stella (48 cans) to drink at home along with more vodka! I hated the life i was living but still went back to the bottle a few weeks after a detox. Eventually i stopped eating because i lost my appetite completely, my weight had dropped so dramatically i just looked like skin and bone. My liver was badly damaged to the extent of having cirrhosis, which led to me having jaundice, my skin was yellow as were the white of my eyes. In fact i was close to death, though i didn't realize how close until much later. It's now been just over 8yrs since i received that last detox and i'm happy to say i've been dry ever since. Once the booze gets a proper grip on you it's very hard to stop.

We can't pick and choose who benefits from the NHS. It's for everyone. Where would it end if we started saying that some illnesses are self inflicted and should not be helped. The NHS savings do not sound huge when you think of the possible cost of that unit but in a way it is still saving lives from being wasted. It is a major strength of the NHS over systems like the USA's that it can take a preventative approach

Facilities like these are rare in the UK. There are massive waiting lists for alcohol treatment programs and the vast majority of alcoholics can’t access them.
There are many private clinic’s that vary in price enormously.
My brother was an alcoholic and in 2010 after my mother’s death, the family had to intervene and pay for him to be treated in a secure facility. He was initially admitted for 3 months which was extended to 6 months. At that time it cost £25,000 in total, which was very cheap.
The facility was a 4 hour drive and we were told to let him keep drinking throughout the journey because if he stopped he could’ve had a seizure.
Whilst this place is an excellent start. There’s no way that one week is anywhere near sufficient to treat the underlying problems.
    Great video btw.

I used to work at a facility called Serenity Lane in Eugene, it was usually a 30 day stay. Many patients were "red flag" patients, ordered by the court to get treatment (tx), they'd have to start upstairs in the detox unit where they would get drug or alcohol withdrawal tx. After that they move downstairs to join group counseling. Most were successful, some not. But the rewards for helping people to start a clean life is very rewarding. After they leave the facility, they continue tx in group counseling sessions that meet weekly.

I found their stories sad but the film inspiring and hopeful. I'm more than content to see my tax pounds spent on places like this, because if we do nothing it is still going to cost the NHS billions every year dealing with the after effects of alcohol. At least those pounds are spent here in a positive way that might pull lives back from the edge. No one knows who will be a moderate drinker and of an alcoholic, life events determine that. It could happen to many of those who think "It could never happen to me". They just don't know, because they don't know what is round the next corner in their lives. I say all this as a person aged 55 who has never had an alcoholic drink in his life, but have seen it happen to a teacher and a nurse, one of which died from it. They had homes, partners and even children, but they weren't immune.

Victoria Derbyshire is a BBC TV news investigator and reporter, not a place.
In America it seems there are addicts to be treated, in the UK the view is that it is people first and addiction second.
"Wasting resources" Alcoholics and drinkers cost £3.8 billion per year according to the video, but in 2022 alcohol duty raised £12.4 billion in tax, so I think that drinkers of alcohol have already paid their dues, this is forecast to rise to £17.4 billion in 3 years time. Why does no one talk about that, so drinkers provide an extra £8 billion or so in taxes to help fund the NHS.
We have Band-Aids in the UK, no need to explain.

Imagine how much better it and other services would run if we all just took that bit of extra self responsibility. The English have had a reputation for heavy drinking for nearly a thousand years, & it has been repeatedly remarked upon throughout the intervening years, so this is not a new or modern thing. Things have changed a lot in the last few years, with Brexit & Covid & massive hikes in energy prices etc, & it maybe that such rehab centres don't receive the Government funding that they did 10 years ago. They may have even closed down since that documentary was made. One would hope not. I feel most sorry for the Airforce veteran, who's war experience will have contributed to his dependency, as in many cases.

I just began asking for a St. Clemence instead, it sounds posh ladies but it is only lemonade and fresh orange, a mocktail they would call it now. All Hotel Barmen and most Bar Staff knew them; and people embarrassed to ask for a soft drink for you are never ashamed to ask for a cool sounding mocktail. I gave up drinking in my 20's. I am now in my 60's and always look for alcohol free Christmas puddings as I can't stand the smell or taste of any alcohol. My husband is also tee total because he is also on meds. I have chronic pain and take medical CBD for it. I know I was very blessed to avoid the problems these people have and would love to see their facilities expand. I am British.

It's a reminder of the reality that treating underlying conditions saves the NHS money.
If UK health is overall better than in the US, one reason is because of the way it is funded. The NHS saves money through free screening/vaccination/health education because it keeps people away from hospital. In the US, the system makes more money when people are actually hospitalised or paying to see a doctor.
Compared to treating the sick, healthcare and education is a more efficient way of spending resources.

Great video Joel, as always. It's the hyposcrasy, hype and status around drinking that gets to me, also. If you're just a regular person who starts to go downhill [I guess in the US and UK] then for many [as was seen in your video] there is shame from the person and judging from the high and mighty others. If you are wealthy, however, or a celebrity who goes into re-hab, you go on TV shows and talk about it then write the book!

I am now over seventy and I have never been drunk in my life. It is obvious to me that the US needs to learn from other counties in the world how to look after its people. Keep well and please keep reacting. Best wishes from Australia.

Plus dealing with alcohol related issues earlier saves more money for the nhs down the line when they’re having to deal with cancer and organ failure which are very costly to treat. Obviously the fact it’s helping people is a lot more important than the funding, but funding is a crucial issue to keeping our nhs going

Hi Joel, you are such a compassionate man - thank-you for highlighting this subject... Yes, I think specialist centres like this are the way ahead, as I have in the past encountered people attempting to detox in acute mental health wards, which are often highly-stressed environments anyway, with staff running around responding from one crisis to another and having little time to actually offer much in the way of support to those that need it. Fortunately, I was able to identify by my early 20s that frequent drinking would probably put me on that slippery slope and so, I very seldom drink much alcohol. I haven't done so well in relation to certain types of foods however (dairy products in the main) and I'm now so obese I am unable to walk very far, and my breathing ability is also compromised. Unfortunately, eating disorder services aren't very well resourced at the present time, and there are waiting lists of 2 - 3 years to access each part of the services that are available; which vary from health authority to healthy authority. Hence, I do feel that my longevity and at times, my life, is under some considerable threat as a consequence.

Victoria Derbyshire (pronounced Dar-bee-sheer) is a TV journalist, not a place Joel. My young apprentice has much to learn. I lost a cousin due to alcoholism, it destroys not only their lives but the lives of their loved ones, friends and family. This hits home with me so so much watching that person slowly disappear, but you can’t help them unless they want to be helped. Great reaction. Here in the UK peoples health comes before profit. Unlike the USA nhs has procurement depts which hammer down the prices due to bulk ordering for the whole of the service. Unlike the USA where each hospital buys for itself only. We are lucky here in the uk, but at the moment the NHS is in melt down.
I don’t drink, I have a bottle of Southern Comfort which I have had for over 12 yrs and never opened it. I have an open bottle which is a third empty I have had for nearly 20yrs. It just doesn’t bother me, I have never smoked either. It’s such a shame to see people like this. 🫶🏼🫶🏼 It isn’t pleasant to watch but people need to see this.

and they managed to convince everyone that it was just a drunken accident. My second suicide attempt
I was living on my own so I got sectioned which means you have to go to a mental hospital. I speant 3
months as an in patient and 2 as a day patient. This was in 2000. At the moment I am signed off as sick
but I have been in work for 16 years off and on. The medication they give you is crap. It makes you lose
interest in the things you like; films music, so in a way you feal worse but you can't be bothered to
do anything. Therapist's are a waste of time. I like to call them the_rapist. So the only thing that keeps

You're very compassionate to highlight this. In my view, alcoholics deserve treatment as much as anyone else. Quite often addiction is correlated to mental illness or is seen in patients with chronic pain or other physical illness. In terms of allocating funding to alcohol and drug addiction centres, I think there should be taxpayer investment in such services because intervention can prevent the onset of physical disease that can occur because of excessive alcohol consumption, such as liver failure and certain cancers. So, investment in addiction intervention saves the NHS money in the long run.

Personally, I don't drink, though I did years ago. In my very humble opinion, alcoholism is a serious illness and those affected need help.
One way or another, the people in the UK, will be paying for the damage caused by alcohol abuse - vandalism, broken families, car accidents etc, etc. So, why not spend this money on assisting the alcoholics to detox AND with remaining sober?!! In the long run, it will save the nation money AND save precious lives.

Just like youre not BORN depressed or have some type of mental illness...other PEOPLE cause people to become this way, because of a number of factors....PEOPLE are always the origin of societies problems. And Until society takes accountability for the problems it causes, and sees itself as the root cause for this, alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness will NOT go away. There are ALWAYS underlying causes to all problems. Its not the individuals fault. Its EVERYONE's fault.
