    Ragley mmmbop 2.0.
Just under a grand and one of the most progressive and beautiful looking hardtails I've seen in a while.
Buying myself one end of the month since my nukeproof scout was stolen last year and I've been riding a b-twin rockrider 520 since. (Which may I add, is a hell of a bike) changed from a 100mm stem to a 50 and some grippy pedals. Works like a dream. Would still shit myself if I took it to a real trail centre though!

Gutted to hear about your Scout, but the Ragley looks great, RRP is over £1000 though, hence why it didn't make the list but still a brilliant shout!

    Stoic: 'Stow-ik' - 1.
a person who can endure pain or hardship without showing their feelings or complaining.
Some good bikes there. As a roady I think sub-1000 is all the bike I'd need for occasional mud-fun.

Marin has several compelling options near and under $1000.

The brakes on the Decathlon EST100 are fine… they pulled me up nicely with a system weight of 150kg. I did end up replacing the levers/callipers with Shimano XT but largely all I gained was (delightful) modulation of brake force.

@@bikeradar I tried closer A-B testing on the brakes, I’m going home to wash my blasphemous little mouth out with Shimano brake fluid (the difference was much more noticeable going back to the decathlon brakes).
One thing that might be worth looking out for is the free hub slipping under load. I’ve bought two decathlon mtbs in the last 6 months and they both do it.

For some trails and beginners, it could be all you need though and a good starter bike if you need some help getting your fitness up. Not every bike has to be a shred sled!

Some people might want an e-bike to boost their fitness on tamer trails first, it's always good to have options!
The other bikes may be more competent on rougher trails, but for some riders, it could be a great choice!
