Do you really think they would have called that last Red flag with just 2 to go if Newgarden was leading? HELL NO! It would have finished under caution. That race was stolen from at least two drivers. Oh and one more thing, that little stunt of going into the stands was copied by another Penske driver later that night at Coke 600. Now we know its not unique to Josef, but marketing instructions to the drivers from the same racing camp.
@@TheFinalMeowntdown The zig zagging brought him and Marcus below the Pit Commit line, which by rule requires them to pit, but zig-zagged back onto the track. Had the rules been followed, they both would have been put at back of the lead lap, and guess who would have won.
What a great ambassador for the sport. Thrilled to have cheered him on from Turn 4 on Sunday.

As well I went to the Indy 500 in the late 60s and early 70's before we moved and had my stars back then Andretti, and Foyt Unsers, but this guy reinvigorated me. Joseph congrats what a job well done.

Josef has been my favorite since the beginning of his indycar career. He's always seemed like such a decent and genuine person. This speech confirms it. So thrilled for him, his family, and friends and loved ones.

I knew Josef and his dad when he first started driving carts. Both were nice people. I never expected to one day say I know an Indy 500 winner.
I have meet him many times and he is a class act and if there is one driver that deserved to win the Indianapolis 500 it is him . Mission Accomplished

Joseph is a class act. I had the opportunity to meet him in Long Beach his rookie year and he went above and beyond in helping me record a long-form video essentially making fun of my niece for not coming to the race weekend with me.
I'm a professional entertainer, he was not. He was so good, so funny, so smart, and ad-libbed so naturally.
We've been around each other many times since then, Josef is just a great guy, the type of guy you just want to root for.
He's a deserving Champion, an extremely talented driver, and a wonderful family man. Congratulations to Josef, Ashley, and Team Penske.

My wife and I were watching the race together and were happy to see the race end under a green flag. To many times I have seen the race have a caution with under 5 laps and that was it. Any one that complained is just a sore loser. I like the green/white/checker that NASCAR has and would like to see the same with IndyCar but not for the 500. I am a lifelong fan of IndyCar and will always be one. I think that the red flags were the best way to go. Thanks for a great race and congratulations to Josef for his win. I think that the purchase of the track and the series by Mr. Penske was the best thing for both him and the track. Thanks for a great race and see you next year.

That was a totally ballsy move going deep into the pit lane entrance to shake off his pursuers who were drafting on him. He just barely made it out and his opponents had to break off the drafting or crash into the pit wall entrance. Your desire to win supercedes the consequence of the dangers you put yourself in to win.
This race showed why IndyCar needs to have NASCAR-style overtime. As I would do it, it would be the same green-white-checker two-lap shootout as in NASCAR, however, unlike NASCAR (where if the leader takes the white flag, the race finishes on the next flag regardless of yellow or checker), if the lead driver DOES NOT TAKE THE CHECKERED FLAG, as many additional green-white-checker attempts as necessary are done until the lead driver takes the checkered flag under green. That I would do to satisfy casual fans who will only accept a green flag finish even if it takes 20+ attempts to do it.

I’ll view the result as legitimate if you give the 2002 win to Paul Tracy!! Great, exciting race nonetheless. Just a little too manufactured with the last two red flags… but as Danica said, “this is an entertainment sport after all”.
Entertainment should be natural and legit, not gimmicky and fake/forced like NASCAR.
Yes we all want to be entertained, but safety should always be first. The race was good, but the last 2 red flags were… questionable…. Same with the last one.

I say this a lot and I will say it again; The fact that the Victory Celebration isn't nationally televised like it was on ESPN back in the 1990s and 2000s is a travesty. It's really that simple.

He stepped in for Dave Calabro. Dave was sick. He's a great broadcaster. He got laid off at ABC/ESPN because of ESPN not because he's not respected.
What a strange take. Bestwick is fantastic. He was let go from ESPN for financial reasons.
I would much rather have him than Dave Calabro. Dave is only in this spot because he worked with Tom Carnegie. How can you be working at IMS for 20+ years and still be that unknowledgeable about motor racing?
