I love how u said Haiti would be a prime tourist spot if they can get out of the situation they're in. Haiti was once the prime tourist destination back in the 50's , 60's and 70's. This was before Bahamas and Jamaica. It was once known as the Black Pearl of the Antilles. My mom would tell me stories. I didn't go to Haiti until years after the earthquake since I was born in the States. I fell in love with Haiti 🇭🇹. I'm so sad for the kidnappings and violence taking place in Port au Prince. 😪 I wish u went to Haiti during better times. I'm happy u both were able to make it out ok. Thank u Jesus Christ 🙏🏾

Oskar and Dan. Wow! What a two series experience of Haiti. I have friends that have worked there to try and help and both left due to the 'problems'. What an amazing country and so full of potential. First off, I am glad you guys are out of Haiti and safe and well - you were very brave! But, what makes your journey special, is showing the real side of the island and its people. And as you say at the end 'it is a diamond'. Lets hope greed, and all the rest of the problems there by a select few, that destroy it for all, will one day be in the past and the Haitian people can really start to deserve the life they so rightly should have. As a coincidence, I met a delivery guy in my buildings elevator this week and obviously being a 'gringo' living in Brazil he asked me if I was French. I said not and we spoke in Portuguese and he that he was from Haiti. I told him of your first video and how amazed I was bout the country and he was so happy and tearful :(( that he had had to leave. Hello there. Just wanna say I am in awe of your adventurous journey to Haiti. I was there in Haiti back at the start of 2010 on a mission trip for the earthquake that happened helping to build homes in Cite Soliel. I was the oddball because alot of the Haitian people had never seen a U.S. black American before who mostly spoke English. But yes, the situation was beyond horrible. For example, our team could only get clean water from a well we had to hike to about 2 miles away while being surrounded by security. Wont even go into showering/hygiene issues and constant gunshots. I will say that one thing Haiti should do is to invest in bringing back more forests since Haiti has lost the majority of its forests since 1980s due to illegal logging and indiscriminate banana/coconut palm plantations. Investing in more green space, bringing back indigenous species, and more environmental protection will not increase tourism but build their economy closer to the level of the Dominican Republic.

Therefore, consider the following advice from old me : If you are a minor child, please have your parents and other mature adults in your entourage check out the recent very troubling news about Haïti before reserving your flights across the Atlantic Ocean !
The current situation there might be emotionally and physically much more troubling than the aftermath of an earthquake ! Therefore, IT'S NOT AT ALL A GOOD IDEA TO TRAVEL THERE in the near future !!! Perhaps, not until 2023 , God willing ! Please PRAY for His Grace !
Best regards to you, your Mom, and your entire family! Keep safe from the COVID-19 virus variants !

Hejsan! The walk across the mountains is iconic and one that people in Haiti dream of doing.... I did the hike from Furcy high above Port-au-Prince to Jacmel some twenty years ago with a friend, At the time, there was no road going from Furcy to the top at Seguin, just a narrow trail - and we were the only two whities walking on the crests of the mountains, winding our way up. The hike took us two days, one day walking up, one day walking down. with a stop overnight at a small hotel at the top. You guys took the passable road in the other direction, from the villages near Jacmel, up to the top, before you started hiking down - that's the easy part!! Long story. What I'm missing in your description of your hike is just a little info about the mountains you were hiking through - the top is an exceptional nature reserve and it's absolutely eerie and surreal to be there among the giant ferns and the tall pines. And I think you're a bit harsh on the tour operator. I've used her services several times, her drivers and guides are impeccable, her vehicles safe, and I don't think you can blame the lady for warning you against kidnappings and other dangers. It IS potentially dangerous to be in Haiti - especially as a white tourist - but the locals are also very exposed. So one should never, ever take security warnings lightly. That said, go to Haiti, meet the people and reverse the pictures from the media - you'll love it!!! Ayiti rete nan kè mwen!

Wow - how wonderful that you got to hike through those montagnes avec Serge. Yes - me and my daughter were also threatened with a knife in a Cape Town street, but luckily were rescued by brave men who literally did their karate thing. I froze with fear. Sad that Port au Prince looks so bad, but magnifique vistas over the ocean. One day - but not in my lifetime. Greetings from Egoli, Mzansi.

Hi guys I enjoyed the Haiti blogs - my husband and I visited Haiti in the early 70’s stayed at the Grand Hotel Oloffson - it was magnificent at the time
owned by a ex US football player Al Seitz - I have many stories (Papa Doc REIGN ) - the place hasn’t changed much - beautiful countryside but horrid political / governmental
Corruption- two girls were raped at the hotel by a high government official while we were there. Nothing could be done. We acquired lots of artwork - some now valuable
Again many stories - glad you made it out safely.

A beautifully made film. Very well narrated and fascinating. Serge's eloquence was extremely touching too! How did you get out of there? Will there be a part 3? Also might be a good idea to mention who the British lady was so that future travellers can avoid her! I'm here just a couple of days after the earthquake and it works be great to know that Serge is ok!

I drove a pickup from Port au Prince through Kenscoff, Furcy, and down to Marigot in 2010. It was along those same mountain roads - which were just motorbike tracks in some places back then. 16 hours to do 55kms... An incredible journey...
