    Scruton is truly an amazing thinker. His philosophical work is grounded on the reality of ordinary people. Theoretical marxists may have a point in some "things", but they just dont recognise that high culture is a form of knowledge and it cannot be denied to us.

    Dear professor Scruton, you should talk to Brazilian professor Olavo de Carvalho. He introduced your work to his fellow countrymen and even done a course about a part of your philosophy (he is respectably critical of some kantian elements in your thought, nonetheless). An encounter as such would generate a positive intellectual tsunami, methinks, for Brazil and for Britain. Cheers!

      Gabriel Marini I notice many comments from Brazil. As an Englishman and neighbour of Mr Scruton it is fascinating to see his ideas spreading. I am woefully ignorant where it comes to Brazil but know the hostile reception the new president received in European press. Perhaps you would sum up the political, social and economic situation in Brazil? I appreciate CZcams is not an ideal platform!

    • @gabrielguitarman

       Nelson Mandela A) Culturally, up until 1960´s, Brazil had a normal intellectual field, with intelligent thinkers, poets, writers, musicians and philosophers from both sides of the political spectrum. From 1960 onwards, the gramscian paradigm of space occupation of higher Ed and pop culture took place and, with one same punch, intelligence and the right wing disappeared. Olavo de Carvalho was, to some extent, Brazil´s mixture of Roger Scruton, Allan Bloom, Eric Voegelin, Lionel Trilling and Menken: He analized the patient´s disease (in A nova era e a Revolução cultural, The new age and the Cultural Revolution) philosophized upon this debacle (in O jardim das Aflições, the garden of Afflictions), criticized the intelligentsia´s men, one by one (in O Imbecil Coletivo, the Collective Imbecile), and through his popular writings, organized in a huge best seller, he triggered the cultural counter-revolution that led Jair Bolsonaro´s path to presidency (in O mínimo que você precisa saber para não ser um idiota, The Minimum you should know to avoid being an idiot); B) Politically, since 1988, we were governed by the center-left (the Social Democratic Party, which could be considered as the union of Blairites from the Labor Party with the Liberal Democrats in England) with the PMDB (a sort of EUA´s Democratic Party) and, then, by the Hard left (The Workers Party, that is, in comparative terms, our corbinist faction of your Labor Party and the traditional communists) with the PMDB. Jair Bolsonaro was the first conservative candidate that even participated in our elections, via a small party. He is anti-globalism, pro free trade and pro the development of a safer country. C) Economically, Brazil lost the commodities boom of the 2000´s, as the left did not invested in infrastructure and basically wiped up their asses with “free money” from China´s demand. Corruption went bonkers, and, right now, we are facing a fiscal crisis related to the Pension System.
      I think that this is the best I can do for now. Hope it helps!
      Cheers!

      @@gabrielguitarman I too noticed how many Brazilians commented in this thread. Very interesting. Why do you think that so many Brazilians are drawn to this video? Also, what do you think of Jair Bolsonaro? From what I, a westerner, have heard, there aren't many positive things about him. Now, of course, what I read in the media may well be biased and so I'd like to hear from you, a Brazilian what life under Bolsonaro is like and what you and others think of him.

    • @gabrielguitarman
      @gabrielguitarman Před 5 lety +4

      @@tacdenhaan Dear TAC,
      A short answer would be that a lot of Olavo´s readers, due to his influence, are Scruton´s readers also. By themselves, they are also avid followers of professor Peterson´s work. Concerning Bolsonaro, I should say that, comparatively, he´s the Brazilian version of Donald Trump or Nigel Farage. He was, indeed, the only right wing voice in parliamentary politics for more than a decade. Yes, he was more reactionary, and had some military-like misconceptions (Brazilian Military Forces are historically positivists, a French ideology created by Auguste Comte, mixting conservative, progressive and technocratic principles), really said some not so pleasant stuff, but, with time and experience, especially bearing in mind Olavo´s influence, he went to a more traditional liberal-conservative/populist mindset. But I should also say that 98% of what is told by the media is BS. If one was to paint a psychological portrait of Bolsonaro, easily, it would be what we call the “barbecue uncle”, a familiar Brazilian character that is known to have a wide sense of humor, common sense. Communitarian ties without racial prejudices. As his presidency is just stating, I cannot say a lot. But, under the last asminsitrations, since the redemocratization, we lived culturally and economically, to a varying amount of degreed, under leftist and socialist rule. We hope that, at minimum, he can at least restore Brazil´s place in international relations, restore our economy and education and, last not least, reduce the size of the Federal Government.
      I should say that Brazil´s culture is Western, also. We are a nation of Catholics, speaking a really special latin tongue, historically brother-like to the USA.
      Warm regards!

    A thoroughly absorbing discussion. I'm an admirer of both these gentlemen. I loved the comments by Sir Roger from 17:47 through to 18:50 [edited in the interest of brevity]:
    "...the world of scholarship and education that we both belong to has turned, as you say, in this negative direction...try to put back into the subject-matter one's own inherent belief in it, and to recognise that we're not around on this earth for very long and we do have an obligation to find the things that we love and not the things that we reject, and that those things that we love - the best way towards them is to look at the things that other people have loved. That's what a culture is. It's the residue of all the things that people have thought worthwhile to preserve, and teaching that will again reconnect us to what matters."

    It is clearly true that some of those who do not, as Peterson puts it, “manifest what they could in the world”, become embittered, and so put their relative failure down to power dynamics. But it surely must also be true that those who do well, may prefer to attribute their success as being simply due to their own effort, thus understating the effect of power imbalances. To acknowledge that these dynamics exist is to accept that you r success may be due in no small part to luck. My view of the fundamental difference between left and right is an overstatement of systemic influences on one side and their understatement on the other.
