- The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad brought out this huge snow plow being pushed by ELS 501 which is an EMD SD40-2 which was built as MILW 22 (Milwaukee Road). Over a foot of snow feel in most areas! Watch until the end when the side plow catches the snow just perfect to cover me good!

OK Jason!! loved the video...the grand finale was so good, way to take one for the team!!!!
Being from New Orleans, I can say this was something to see.
I bet.. ha ha
Look up OSR snow plow on CZcams, you'll see some interesting stuff also not available in New Orleans
Idk but this looks like some fun if only off the rails. We could make alot of snowball fights. But seriously on a good note clears rails very well. Big boy. Tysm
Wow the SD40 is still in demonstrator paint awesome ! Great catch!
Nice!
What a great catch Jason. Best train plow video you have ever filmed. Getting blasted with snow was the best. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks for sharing this.
Great video. Thanks
You are welcome!
I use to operate one made by Jackson Jordan. I ran the spreader between Ogden, UT and Wells.NV for the SPRR.
The Jordan spreader was designed in St. Thomas Ontario by a guy named of all things Jordan. He worked for the Michigan Central railroad that ran through southwestern Ontario.
Greetings from Kitchener Ontario near Toronto. I've been enjoying the plow videos. I suspect that the plow has been homebuilt rather than a Russell although it use the same design. The small plow bewteen the trucks is a flanger. Its purpose is to clear the snow between the rails because that packed snow increases friction & fuel consumption and in fresh snow, sometimes affects brake conditioning. Conditioning is periodically applying brakes to keep brakeshoes warm & snow buildup off them.
Here in Tulsa, we get a 4-6 inch snow maybe once a decade, so this is always enjoyable to watch.
Great video!!!
I'm surprised that, especially at 4:20 with the crossing not activating, the engineer didn't have the bells going nor the horns blasting. The loco just kinda mosies across the road quietly!
Kat the Foxtaur listen closely you hear the bell
Shove move, no bells or horn if the engine isn't leading. The plow operator is directing the shove.
@@thomasalanjensen9375they should've flagged that crossing, there was no protection there.
LOL He got you allright! Wisconsin looks so pretty, like Christmas tree land. Makes me want to go up there. 🌲
hahaha that what kind of awesome
WOOHOO FROM TEXAS 😎😎😎
You do an amazing job on your videos
That was incredible!! Thank you for sharing this!! Steven Sipes
I worked a lot of plows on CP in the 1980s. We plowed at higher speeds than the ones in the video. On the main track we sometimes got over 50 mph. On the Woodstock branch lines, we sometimes encountered snowdrifts in cuts as high as the train. We'd have to charge into them at speed & we'd bog down, back up a mile or more and hit it again. Ah good times. CP built their own plows in the early 1900s. The flanger on ours was a drop down plate on the front. That design was better than Russells because the flanged snow was cleared by the wings which were flat at bottom. We were left with a flat path on both sides of the railhead if we had to walk up a disabled train.
Holy smokes the plow even rocks and rolls
I could tell you loved it. Looking forward to seeing the snowmobile races video in mancelona 😉
Jason, that was cool.
That shot starting at 5:10 (before you got buried) was money. Like frame the print and sell it at Trainfest money.
Wow I love snow but it's cold enough here in Tennessee stay warm lol.
too cool
1:11 Plow operator's thinking, "Oh shit! A switch stand!"
We haven't had enough snow for the plow to come out. 3 to 5 is what we got Friday night - Saturday morning. Then it rained all afternoon turning everything to a heavy mess. Froze solid yesterday.
Nice one friend from uk
Nice catch, Jason. The "secondary plow" is called a flanger. It clears the area right inside the rails for the flanges on the train's wheels. This prevents ice buildup which can cause derailments. This has to be lifted at crossings and switches. Some RR's still have diagonal signs to tell the snowplow crew to raise the flanger (don't remember seeing them in your video).
Interesting. I’ve always thought that a plow and a flanger were one and the same. Thanks for clarifying.
The buildup bewteen the rails also acts like a retarder on the wheels increasing fuel consumption. We used to have two tracks on a steep hill with directional operation. Westbounds going uphill would stall in winter due to heavy buildup between the rails. Once they got around to running the plow, which cleared the 'flange' things were better. We used wedge plows and we even had a double track wedge plow which threw most of the snow to one side.
just found your videos of the e&ls. i model in N. an am a railfan. i thank e&ls for their paint scheme on the 112. gives me a idea for my N scale outfit. that i will change there black to GN green & keep the orange. the shop that built her did a nice russell build out of a 40 ft box car. the back wall gives her away.
Wow that was great, what ya think plow train guys thought when they saw you 3rd time, they didn't slow down lol thank you Jason that was fun😀🤣👍
my guess, great vid
Actually a "flanger" drops between the rails to clear flangeways of snow/ice, and those "secondary" plows are actually "spreader wings" to push the snow further out from the track.
Nice! Watching from Fort Wayne, IN. Quite cold too. Hardly any snow so far here.
Awesome video!! The crossing signals not activated at the following crossings E. F Street, E. H Street, E. Breitung Street and E. Breen Street But the one at the Country O Road crossing is flashing.
Plow extras are one of the coolest types of trains. I'm guessing that they shut off those crossing lights in East Kingsford because of the derailment zone. The circuit could have been damaged, ect. Looks like the conductor came out of the engine, presumably to flag the crossing, but they just rolled through since there was no traffic there.
You got swooshed with snow!
Another great video
I had video of the snowblower engine out in Colorado that was cool as well .
The plow looks almost homemade, out of a 40-foot boxcar, Russell-style front blade, and homebuilt spreader wings, eh?
Good catch...
This such a cool video Jason I had to watch over and over again! I will share on my time line for my friends to see!
