  • The rear popper glass in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ randomly broke yesterday, but.. why?! Was it from excessive heat?
    In this video we will go over possible causes, how to remove/reinstall rear window glass and even how to find a replacement in the u-pull junk yard

    That had to been stress. I’ve had my jeep at 110 in Arizona.

    Your first guess is the right guess. The window had some sort of defect in it, possibly a small stone indentation or something like that, and the sun hit it directly and pop it goes. I had the same thing happen to my front windshield about a month ago here in South Carolina, luckily it just cracked and did not explode.

    9:30 ~ Great job using your head. No offense, that install is a two-man job.
    Where's Eric when you need him?
    Just, bit of advice Bro, keep a pair of work-gloves in the vehicle just in case.

    I've heard of similar things happening, but never seen it caused from heat...usually its from something being off centered or at some other stress point when being opened or closed.
    I shattered the back window on a camper shell on my pickup a while back because the gas struts I bought that were supposed to work, worked so well it snapped the window when I got it about 1/4 of the way open, it flew up like a jet plane taking off....hmm, maybe not the right struts LOL. I took them off, got the window fixed, and never put struts on it, used an old broom handle for a prop after that LOL.

    Slight score/scratch + heat = boom. Have seen it within the fleet I managed many times.

    The same happened to me about month ago to my ZJ. Rear window exploded without any apparent reason and since I live in good neighborhood I suspect some internal tension. Unfortunately where I live there are no junkyards overflowing with Jeep parts Good job, Doug!

    "Hotter than a two-dollar pistol."
    That's a Dan Rather-ism, I think.
    He also said, "Hotter than a Times Square Rolex!" and, "Hotter than a Dallas parking lot!"
    (He explained that he worked in an oil field in Texas as a young man, and there's only so many times you can say, "It's hotter than Hell!")
    Anyway, just wanted to share since I noticed in another video that you said the two-dollar pistol line.

    Back glass popped on my 2000 wj one day, turns out, a 50+ ft 3ft wide cedar tree decided to snap and fall right on it during a storm lol, that’ll definitely make and glass explode

  • @outdoorsmansgarage
    @outdoorsmansgarage Před 24 dny +2

    Yep that happened to me before I believe your theory on the gas shocks might be the reason. Either that or the heat just built up too much pressure on the inside of your vehicle that happens a lot out here in the communist republic of California's High Desert you have to roll your windows down just a tiny bit to let the pressure out

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  Před 24 dny

      Seriously? That is wild. It is more the humidity here. It doesn't get all the hot in comparison

    • @outdoorsmansgarage
      @outdoorsmansgarage Před 24 dny

      @@DEInTheGarage Yeah thats true but if enough radiant heat builds up inside a car it could create enough pressure to blow out a window

      You can probably downgrade them if you really try. If you find out what the factory ones are rated to lift, you can order something else that will fit (from someone like McMaster-Carr) but is meant for less weight.
      I THINK that would solve the problem in the warmer months, and then you'd switch back to regular ones for the winter. (I'm not positive that I'm right...)

    This happened to me about 20 or 21 years ago on my 94 gmc sonoma except it was my windshield that cracked all over the place and it was way hotter like close to 110 degrees and this was in Missouri. Now I worked for at that time at a car dealership and some of the guys that worked there were sketchy as heck and down right jerks so I don't know if it was really the heat or one of those guys smashed my windshield the reason why I say this cause the windshield caved in like someone smashed it and I didn't really do anything other than have the windshield replaced cause the guy that owned the place was a friend of my brother in law. I also wanted to say I've asked several people including windshield install techs and they've never seen it happen but maybe happen but they were not sure.
