  • What is a gravel bike really ? When should you buy one ? Why not just but a road bike or a mountain bike ?
    These are all questions we try to explore in this video. I take my long term demo Bianchi Arcadex gravel bike to the Cotswolds for a weekend of riding to find out. the bike performed brilliantly but a navigation error really cost us !

    I love my Trek dual sport for these mixed surface rides, it’s more upright stance and suspension suits my 70 year old body a bit better than a true gravel bike.

    i've discovered the joy of ceramic coating my bikes....takes time to do well, but the cleaning is very easy....water and dish soap and everything falls off.....if you wanted to translate the bike types to cars the gravel bike is probably a hatchback - good at everything but not a sports car nor a 4x4.....and like the latter, many people with a full suspension mountain bike never use its full capabilities.

    I have been riding MTB and Road bikes for over 30 years and never felt I needed a bike for gravel. Its amazing how we all got on without one. This is just bike companies reinventing the wheel yet again to sell more bikes. Remember the lefty fork from Cannondale, another sales gimmick to sell bikes, not exactly a good seller in 2021. A good hardtail MTB is a gravel bike, and a lot more comfortable......

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 2 lety

      All I would say is you need to spend some time on a gravel bike. Quite a bit different to a hard tail MTB. Especially on the road 👍

    Top effort!
    Mid ride beers just make me feel heavy (Or more heavy!) I'd have plenty at the end though....
    I'm not convinced about gravel bikes, a hardtail on 29" wheels is pretty good on the road and all you need to do is flick the lever for some front suspension travel.
    I think its a bit of a marketing ploy to sell more bikes by the big bike firms.
    Interesting video though.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 2 lety

      The difference is that as you say, a hard tail is pretty good on the road but a gravel bike is really good and that make a huge difference on a day like we had in this video 👍

    Being an older rider in Australia 🇦🇺, I still don’t get the “gravel” bike thing. My front suspension MTB gives me upright comfort on the road stretches and enough control on the tracks. I’m using Schwalbe Hurricane 2 crossover type tyres on 29” rims. At 68 I don’t go out on training rides so gave up my road bike and use the MTB purely for exercise and entertainment. As you say “to each their own”. But if I could afford one of every type…….

    I’ve currently got an 47cm Infinito CV, which I love it. Now planning to have a gravel bike to use as a winter bike as well… watching this video, this maybe a good option?
    If I’m riding the smallest bianchi frame on infinito, should I try the XS for the arcadex?

    After 53 miles I could not have got out of my coffin to clean the bike!! Now I know by the standards of the D.H.S.S.that makes me a lazy git unworthy of a disability pension, but being dead is not the main reason for getting out of my coffin. That would be the 300 six inch nails my wife had driven through the lid.
