The model show is a great idea. Unfortunately, with how gas prices are and living all the way in Michigan, I wouldn't be able to attend. It would be great to see your work as well as others and try my hand at submitting a Trek model in your show.

Boyd, I have been intently watching this build and waiting a long time for a pro like you to tackle this nightmare kit. I got this kit several years ago ( it didn't have all the extra diorama part in it ) and I wrestled with all the saucer sections for over a month until I finely broke a couple of panels, after being totally frustrated and angry the saucer section ended up in the trash can. I did finish the interior though. Your patience and perseverance are highly commendable and what makes you a pro modeler. I'm sure you had some colorful language while doing this build ! I don't know why they couldn't just mold the upper and lower saucer sections in one piece ? I guess the didn't want to make a box that big, any how YOU HAVE DONE AN ABSOLUTELY SPECTULAR JOB with this kit. THANK YOU BOYD, this is one of my most favorite star ships.
Boyd, that C-57 is just beautiful!! I think a model show is an excellent idea. Especially with guests and vendors! It could very easily become an annual thing! I know that if I was closer I would definitely be there!!

You just do so many cool build's. I truly try to do some of the things you pull off. The only thing that I come close to is having to go get another kit. Because I wrecked the first, second one's.. 😂 But hey, it's all about the fun.👍

Man, that finish looks fantastic! The fact that you can have a gloss finish on a model that had so many difficult panels to match up and have it looking as excellent as yours does is a testament to your amazing skills to pull that off! I hope the dome turns out great. I live about 900 miles away from you and might be able to rent a car and drive down there for that show next year. Sounds like a great event.

Having a Sci-Fi Fantasy Horror show out west would be great. I've wanted to go to Wonderfest but it's a bit of a long slog from here.
It's a long distance for me too. That's why the idea of having a show here. It would be an easier trip for people in the Western half. If all goes according to plan, we'll have some really great modeling seminars with some really exciting and well known guests. Star Trek fans especially will be excited and it will be a once in a lifetime experience.

This has always been my favorite sci fy spacecraft. I remember being excited when I was watching the Twilight Zone episode The Invaders. They used the C-57D ship as United Space Probe No.1. Slightly modified paint, but easily identifiable. It really hurt to see Agnes Moorehead take a hatchet to the ship. Must say your ship looks great with the gloss paint. Beautiful workmanship. Thanks Keith. Fortunately the real model wasn't used for the smashing scene. A cheaply made substitute was used. The 2 original large and smaller models still exist and are in pretty good shape. The motor for the engine spinning effect still works in at least one of them.
This is an amazing build of this kit, I think the matt finish or the gloss finish either way looks great I think during the filming it's possible that the glossy finish might have been dulled down some by filters they might have used during filming who knows for sure but I like the way this came out looks fantastic Boyd.

Very impressive! Gloss is great! This is your model, build and enjoy as you see fit. The model show is a good idea. I am in the Dallas area, and might be able to get there. We shall see. I have a few Sci Fi models around here. It would be nice just to get together and talk with other modelers. (I haven't competed since the mid 90's) . I build for myself mostly. I could maybe be talked into displaying The Runabout I did awhile back.
Thanks, I'm glad I went with the gloss too. It's good to hear that you'd be interested in attending the model show. It will be centered around getting together with other SciFi, horror & Fantasy modelers to show their stuff and talk and just have a great time. The big attraction will be the modeling seminars we'll have. Star Trek fans especially will be very excited. It's basically a once in a lifetime thing. The categories will cover things that are very popular with modelers today.

I love Forbidden Planet and your work. I heard there was a possible remake of the movie in the works about 10 years ago, but it petered out. Not sure what ever became of it. I have some ideas of my own for what could be a great series that would happen after the events in the film. Maybe I'll do it as a comic or something :)
A remake of ANY classic done today would turn out TERRIBLE with the mentality of the creators and people running the production companies!

If memory serves me correctly' the film's saucer actually had the dome surface on top.Many people have noticed that on 8 episodes of Twilight Zone they used footage from Forbidden Planet for a few seconds where the same saucer is shown but upside down. Are you constructing a proper top dome also?Iminterested in your construction process and attempting to build one that flies.Any info would be appreciated. Thank You.
The kit comes with the top dome molded in clear plastic. It's been noted that the shape is incorrect and it's too flat on the sides instead of having an almost continuous radius. A friend of mine does some plastic vacu-forming and is attempting to make me a replacement that looks more accurate. We'll have to see if it will fit properly and clear the edges of the interior walls.
Looks great!!, what did you use to paint the lower engine clear plastic to diffuse the light ?and what kind of tape did you use to create the engine strips
What I want to know is what's the trick for painting the outer rim of the saucer the darker color, Did you use an after marked paint mask?
bit of a gap between the hand rail and the stairway that the light is shining through. Only nitpick I have with the build!
Good eye! that's a spot where I didn't expect a light leak. It will be fixed before the final reveal.

I’d like to see the reference photos that show the contrasting silvers. No offense, Boyd, but I’ve seen the movie twice recently and I didn’t see that detail. And the ship was definitely not glossy. Totally love your channel. Just not convinced of your approach.
There are lot's of reference photos of the ship. The two original models still exist and are in pretty good shape. It definitely has the two tone contrasting paint job which is described as being an argent silver color for the main saucer and a gunmetal grey on the outer ring top & bottom. As I mentioned, the original model had a flat finish. They usually always did this to avoid light reflections glaring into the camera.
I just like the gloss look myself. It will definitely be easier to keep it dusted off this way.
May I quietly remind people that how a ship is painted and how it LOOKS ON SCREEN are 2 different things mainly because of lighting and the filmstock used to capture the footage.
I didn't believe for years that the Klingon miniatures used in the original Star Trek TV series and the original motion picture were green. They always photographed grey. What I learned later from this channel and reading Star Trek model articles on other websites was the lighting was the main culprit; the very strong lighting used (in especially the first Star Trek feature) drowned out the colors of the K'tinga class miniature in particular. There may have been issues because of late film processing with the original Star Trek feature! The cans of film of the completed theatrical cut were still wet when they were delivered to theaters in December 1979. There were a lot of matting/compositing issues in that film (which pop out even in the Director's Cut on DVD) and it wouldn't surprise me if they made color-grading mistakes in some of the scenes.
The live-action sets on ST:TMP were supposed to be dark AND noisy (not on purpose but the film wasn't planned well; Nicholas made radical changes to the lighting and sets on ST2 to make that film work easier. I think ST2 was a better-executed film than STTMP and they didn't make as many last-minute changes). I'm sure they had to redo color-balance for those scenes in STTMP. Virtually all the dialogue had to be redubbed in post because the sets were noise and the mikes didn't pick up the voices well!
The ONLY Klingon miniature I've seen that looks in person like it did on film from the TOS era is the revised K'tinga Class Kronos One from Star Trek VI. The motion picture photography was truer to the actual paint scheme of the model for that film.
@@TrekWorks As far as the paint job goes, it's fine.
I'm done arguing with what's authentic and not. What I discovered with Star Trek and Star Wars models was enough to convince me that the film-authentic argument is subjective because no 2 copies of any vehicle are exactly alike even if they're supposed to represent the same ship! Also, there are factors like lighting, the paint used, camera lenses, and film stock that change how colors appear.
Besides, it's your money and you're the one who has to live with it.
I've learned to live with "good enough" so I don't drive myself crazy with personal projects! Nothing modeling related unless I learn to use an animation program. The styrene stuff unless it's simple Gundam models would drive me nuts.
