    Do I make a MESS tig welding titanium for the first time?? Do I crush first try....? Regardless, what better way to learn to tig weld something new, than to do it on my CZcams channel for who knows HOW MANY people to watch...But it was a blast. Learning something new and having fun playing around is the BEST fun I can have in my studio, and brings me back to the old days of when I first started tig welding.

      Good looking bead. Have you ever tried your tig art on mild steel? Thin mild steel. For example a motorcycle gas tank? I'm wondering about rust proofing and warpage. I'm putting together a 1964 Triumph t120r and was thinking that the battery box and gas tank might look good with some tig art on them. There are a few other ideas floating around, but wanted to get your opinion.

    I love this channel, I had a customer who wanted a titanium 8.50 cert cage in his 1000hp 70 charger. Took me almost a month but tig welds were clean and everything had good continuity all through the cage. I can't even guess how much that cost him. Wish I never stopped welding/ fabrication. Your Channel is great and your breakdowns are perfect. I'm buying another tig as soon as I can

      Hi, I've just started in an aerospace company and I'm doing my titanium test pieces 0.7mm butt and t fillet, the butt I found quite easy but I when I tried the t fillet I finally understood what they meant by "sticky to weld", sometimes I get a really nice consistent weld and others it seems to stick more 🤣 it's definitely testing my patient but improving all the time👍

    Looks pretty good for a first welded pieces of titanium. I have done some of that for living in previous work. It is kind of easy material to weld, just need be careful with that back shielding gas. Around 20 yrs ago we made huge titanium pipes, one guy was welding and another one was in the tube holding the back shieldgas fixture on the spot where it was welded. I guess they have changed that method nowadays, it wasnt the most healthiest jobs to inhale that crap inside of the pipe.

    Cool. I enjoy watching you challenge yourself. I tried some for fun too and ran out of argon gas right at the end of the bead around a 1” coped tubing “t” fit up. Then tried some beads on 3mm thick ti and recon that’s harder. It warped, it crackled and groaned and made all sorts of noises. Sure know what you mean about that filler rod being sticky☹️ I’m not a welder, just a hobby burner. I also made a 50x50x50x 1mm cube (dice) for fun and hell that thing rings when you roll it.

    I got some Ti coupons and filler rods in from weldmetals Thursday. I also have a furick BBW cup waiting for it. A purge fixture too though based on what they said on one of Jody's podcasts I need to modify it a bit for the butt joint. I am going to try to teach myself titanium welding, so this video was very timely for me. I do want to try out some of the pie cuts and pipe from Panda when I get time. They mentioned the filler rod sticking on the podcast,I think they said some Ti alloys are worse than others about it. I do have a project in mind if I can pick up the process quick enough. Wouldn't be necessary, but titanium would be cool.

    I think you've just sparked a hobby for me and maybe a business venture. The ways titanium could be used, structurally, automotively, and artistically, have me sold I think. Thanks for the content :)
    Also! What about a water cooled block to weld titanium on, something pretty chilly, say -50c, like a condenser/radiator setup, and use sort of thermal paste on the back side to conduct the heat away?
    Just a thought for a more permanent and cost.. effective? way, instead of using gas, especially on bigger pieces.

    • @ericbeckner6959
      @ericbeckner6959 Před 2 lety

      The heat is not a problem TI likes lots of heat. But the oxygen in the air can't hit the puddle or it creates a white crystal and causes weld to want to break. That is why you need to shield the back side.
