      BUT more than half of the 24 occurred before the Open Era when most players do not train full time as they are not paid to win matches, which compromise the quality of tennis then ... thats one of the reasons why she was usually NOT named as the top female tennis player of all time ...

      88feji dumb argument as you can only play in your own era. Her winning percentage is the highest. She won a calendar singles grand slam , 2 x mixed doubles grand slams and won every grand slam title twice. 12 times as an amateur. Gave up for 2 years ( how many titles could she have won) then won them all again as a professional. The GOAT.

      @@88feji It's assumed that you didn't watch the part (did you watch any part?) of the documentary which told you about Margaret Court's training regime many years before the start of the Open Era. On reflection do you think that it had anything whatsoever to do with her success in annexing so many Grand Slam titles or would any other players have denied her that success if they had demonstrated the same or greater commitment?

    • @TheVerbalVolley
      @TheVerbalVolley Před 3 lety +2

      No, she's not. She won 11 Oz singles titles ( I won't even get into doubles & and mixed doubles titles) when players couldn't afford to take the boat ride or plane trip over to play in the event. They were amateurs & not paid any $. Oz had such trouble attracting foreign players that this Grand Slam struggled to get even 32 players in the event, rather than the customary 128. Many times it was almost all Australian ladies playing, due to that fact. Margaret also benefited because Billie Jean only played there in 1965 (while still a part-time player, going to college full time & holding down a full time job to pay her tuition as well), winning the singles championship in 1968 (defeating Margaret in the final 6/1/6/2), & being runner-up in 1969 to Court by 6/4.6-1). So, Court was free to win Oz titles just by signing her name to enter the tournament. Roland Garros was similar. Court played at the event since 1961. BJK was not ALLOWED to play there by the US(L)TA until she was the #1 player in the world in 1968. There were two competing circuits at the time, a grass court & a clay court circuit, which ran concurrently with each other. BJK was assigned to the grass court events, & Nancy Richey the clay court events. Again, more free Grand Slam titles for Margaret. Finally, she lost her first ever meeting to a nobody named Billie Jean Moffit in the first round of Wimbledon in 1962 by 1/6,6/3,7/5. Margaret then defeated Billie nine consecutive times without the loss of a single set. In there last 24 matches their head to head was dead even 12-12, to end the rivalry at 21-13 Margaret.

But she did have an overwhelming h2h over all of her rivals when playing them in her prime. I regard her as being behind the group of Evert, Navratilova, Serena, Graf (though Graf was fortunate to have a deranged fan take Seles out at a time when Seles had just won 7 of her last 8 slams and seemingly dispatching Graf with ease....; and Serena had no 'great' rivals)

    dig deep enough with most people you will find something objectionable
    for example, and since McEnroe and King have been very vocal in their criticism of Court, Mt Rushmore in the US is seen as a shrine to democracy but two of the four presidents depicted were slave owners... does that mean only Abe and Teddy should remain on said monument?
    how about a more recent sporting example... should the grief and remembrances for Kobe Bryant now be tempered because of the rape allegation from 2003 and Bryant's admission that although he believed the encounter was consensual, the young woman clearly did not... in fact, should he have had his jerseys retired in view of that admission when he finished his career
    ultimately, Margaret Court was being honoured because she is a champion of tennis and rightfully so as she had an immense career and leave it at that
    otherwise, we would also have to talk about Serena threatening to kill a lines judge in '09 and cheating in '18 at the US Open, hall of famer Karl Malone impregnating a 13 year old girl and then not recognising his child, a 19 year old girl dying as a result of a drug overdose in Gary Ablett Sr's hotel room, Shane Warne taking a banned substance, Warne and Mark Waugh taking money from a bookmaker, Agassi's drug taking and subsequently lying about a spiked drink, thousands cheering for Kyrgios in Melbourne after he had previously shamed Donna Vekic, admitted tanking, and abusing fans and umpires etc.

    Well excuse me all you ultra prejudiced politically correct types, but Margaret Court is a real Aussie champion sportswoman and deserves an Australia Day honour. I stand to be corrected, though I know I am not wrong in innocently believing such Australia Day Awards are given to Australians who have excelled somehow as citizens. And not for their political views. Like seems to be the new order in this politically correct era. Keep feminist, racist, LGBT etc type political correctness right out of Aussie sport and don't let all this politically correct muck splatter all over our Aussie flag that needs to fly high, proud, clean and honest not just on Australia Day but every single day. Just like great sportspeople like her flew high and rose above the rest of the mediocre dross who envy such people and seek to cut the down as tall poppies. Such mediocrity and need to cut down high achievers is one of our not so endearing national characteristics . Politics and especially political correctness in any shape or form simply does not belong in any sporting arena or performing arts venue. Keep it in places where politicians fight it out eg Parliament etc . But, really, it shouldn't even be there, either. It shouldn't be at all. It is destroying our nation, our entire society and spreading worse than Covid and infesting the whole globe. Which is why everyday people must not allow themselves to be hoodwinked by its vacuous promises, like is going on in the US right now, though, hopefully not too long, as they begin to wake up to what is really going on there when the honeymoon phase of their new political regime is over and everyday folk see what it's really all about and become extremely angry about it and do something about it. . . And fight to completely anhihilate it forever, with no hope of it ever regenerating. Crush it completely, no matter what it takes to win this important battle. Follow the example of great sportspeople like her and fight to win. It can and should be done. A moral obligation to do it.

Yes the doubles and mixed is less competitive than the singles, but Court was playing in and winning all 3 forms at the same tournament. She would literally be winning a singles title on same day as doubles and mixed or a day later, yet her singles final opponents were just playing singles, knocked out of doubles in early rounds. She had as much interruption/time on the sideline as Williams due to that, she sat out 4 grand slam tournaments in 71/72 due to this when she was dominating e.g. she won 11 of 16 tournaments she played in from 69 - 73, open era. I think it's a fair chance she could have picked up 2 of the 4 tournaments she didn't play because of this. I think given what she showed in this period it should be enough of a demonstration, but to biased people it won't be. Yes, people like Billie Jean King, Evert and Martina have talked her down and they do know more than the average lay person as you say, but they are also human beings with bias - no different to Mr Average. It is amusing that Australian Tennis does not want to celebrate Margaret Court's achievements. Also, people like McEnroe and Navratilova protested her. This is ironic seeing that Tennis Australia and tennis stars around the world are taking money from Emirates. McEnroe and Navratilova themselves have probably received money from Emirates. Homosexuality is banned in the Emirates. They also receive floggings and jail time if they are lucky. So the activists go after a soft target who would feed homosexuals if they came to her for food. truly degenerate people in the comments here. she doesn’t just have “difference of opinions” she fundamentally believes certain groups of people should have less rights and be demonized in society because of how they were born. she supported apartheid in south africa and said they were “dealing with the situation” much better than america. i assume by “situation” she meant black people existing. she said navratilova shouldn’t be a role model for girls after she came out as a lesbian and compares lgbt people to nazis and says they are works of the devil and has implied that they are all pedophiles. and of course doesn’t believe in their right to marry who they love. so no, it’s not “political correctness” to hate her, it’s having more than 3 brain cells and not being a raging bigot. equal rights should be a pretty basic belief by now but these comments are letting me know otherwise! she was a good tennis player, yes, but that doesn’t mean she can’t also be a pos human being!

      @4browsing so you think the place of origin or the political views has something to do with the preferential treatment?
      I wouldn't say those are far from the truth. People tend to cover up evils that fester even within their own homes for selfish reasons or "the greater good". Not caught up on the allegations against Kobe but if those are true then it's a damn shame to such a legend of sport.
      On the case of Magaret Court, I think most people are baffled not by her words and actions from years ago, but by her stance on issues like homosexuality today. I'm sure it's difficult for court to change her stance today. The older you get the more you are grounded to your own beliefs.
      I think she still remains a legend of the sport. One that people can look up to for her dedication to achieving the greatest records. But I'm only seeing this from her on court achievements. Others would argue that being a legend goes outside the boundaries of the court: Maybe people should not only look to you for your athleticism, but also your acceptance of others of different backgrounds.
