- Walter Payton "Sweetness" Walter held the NFL's all-time rushing record for almost two decades. He broke Jim Brown's mark in 1984 and when he retired after the 1987 season, he had extended the record to 16,726 yards...I grew up a Bears fan so this dude meant alot to me only Dan Marino was more intriguing to me...On the football field, he had seemed unstoppable - and he knew it. Tacklers had difficulty tackling those hard-pounding legs, those runs in which his knees never looked like they were bending, the changes in direction, the bursts through the lines, the overpowering collisions...To me it's a tie between Barry Sanders and Walter as far as running the football but in my eyes i feel he was the the most complete player ever he could run, block, catch, throw, return, and even punt and kick the football you name it he did it...name a player that was that versatile? Sweetness was a different kind of beast!

I knew an NFL defensive lineman by the name of Joe Owens who played for the Saints in the 70s. He said Payton was the favorite running back by all DLs because of his great attitude. Joe said he would hit Walter, who would bounce up, smack him on the fanny, and say "good hit Homeboy!". Then come right back and run over you! When you're respected like that by your opponents it speaks volumes.

As a kid when I watched him play there was this excitement and rush just seeing him do his thing, speeding up the field graceful like a gazelle, stutter stepping cutting and juking, stiff arming and breaking tackles like a bulldozer, I was so awestruck of what he could do and when I would play football with my friends I used to try and mimic all of his moves. I remember one game he trucked a player and when their helmets collided it sounded like a shotgun blast the whole stadium gasped. There’s a highlight of him stiff arming three defenders into the ground in a row, one right after the other.
No other athlete impressed me like he has and no matter how many times I watch his highlights I still get that same sensation, that primal rush of wanting to play like that when I was a kid, watching him never gets old. My favourite athlete of all time

You are so right. We love MJ here. We always will. But Walter was our city's pride in the sport that we Chicagoans feel best represents our toughness and will to keep on trying against seemingly insurmountable odds. He was OUR guy. He never left and his family is still here.
I was in 7th grade when payton was drafted. Watched him carry that team for his whole carrer. Mostly from 75 to 80. He had no help. Everyone knew that he is getting the ball half the time. Look at the first 2 minutes. He has a 18 20 yard run in minnesota. It looks like it was off tackle but he takes a couple strides outside to create the hole then cuts up breaks tackle a 15 then gets inside ten and puts head down for last 8 yd through 3 more tackles. Now those were not great tackles but that is what he created like sanders you could never get a clean hit on him. Only when he was at sideline grinding out against tacklers. That run was my favorite of his ever. I bet every guy who grew up in chicago watching him cried when they found out he died. I did.

He was the greatest player and a great human being that was what he wanted to be known for his humanity. When he died the local radio shows were filled with calls from people he had met and touched so deeply as he was more interested in them than himself.

This man did everything, from being a starting QB one game to kicking field goals in the next. Single-handedly carried the bears to the playoffs in 1977. There will never be another like him. I'm a third generation bears fan in my family. My grandfather grew up following the bears in the 30's and 40's. He remembers watching and following greats like ed sprinkle, gale sayers, butkus, to name a few. Remembers paying a dollar fifty for the 1963 championship game and sitting on the walls of soldier field (back when it was barely a stadium) to watch it. Remembers being at the game in 1955 where George Connor on the bears recorded the biggest hit in the NFL. Said the whole stadium went quiet and that everyone thought that Connor had killed the guy. My dad growing up idolized payton and wanted to be a runningback in the NFL because of him. Never worked out, but payton was always special to him. He was at the game when Payton broke the rushing record and was also at his last game in 87. He still remembers watching Payton at the end of the game, head in hands, after everyone had cleared the field and watching him run off into the locker room for one last time. He still has a signed poster of Payton from the day he broke the record. One day he said he'd give it to me.
Dick Butkus was the reason I became a Bears fan. even with a single win season. - Like it says - Walter Payton is the most complete NFL player in its nearly 100-year history. - Plenty of fans argue this but RARELY does a player
Funny you bring up Butkus. Payton came in just a year after Butkus left the game, and 4 years after Sayers. The Bears always and to this day remain the "Bears". Hard nosed defensive mentally team. Payton brought the defensive mentality to the RB position. One of the reasons why I almost never root against the Bears is I've always respected the kind of players they draft and just the aurra around them by having so many great players and teams. A lot of people today talk about the Pittsburgh Steelers this way. Those 2 franchises with Green Bay are the Gold standard as far as prestige, and historical reverence. When you see thosr colors and iconic simple logos and uniforms, you cant help but imagine back to the days when you were a kid and watched these "bigger than life" guys play a game as physical and tough as it was (pre 2000s). As I'm typing this, it hits me even harder as I have feelings of passion. Asking myself questions about my own life. What kind of life am I living? Did I ever "run out of bounds" in a situation? Or did I have the toughness to turn my shoulders square, put my head down, and plow into and over a problem. We love sport because of the challenges and changes it goes through. We can learn from failure, and take winning as something earned not given, and to enjoy it for as long as our next challenge.
Watching, listening, and admiring the man that he was, Walter Payton used all of his gifts to give many a platform to reach and the wisdom to get there. When you hear Payton speak, he always says things for others to absorb positively, and I bet it was a real joy to have him as a teammate.
I'm so thankful that I was able to watch the entire careers of not only the greatest NBA player in history, but the greatest NFL player who both played for the city of Chicago. #34WalterPayton RIP / #23MichaelJordan

Always been a Cowboys fan since I was a kid in the 60s, but I always loved Walter Payton. A real man. True warrior. Pure class. Total professional. Never a showboat. Never took a knee. Last night I watched that horrid 1985 Cowboy beatdown. Late in the 3rd quarter the game announcers called to our attention that despite the score Dallas fans were still cheering for Walter. Despite breaking his all time rushing record, Emmitt Smith still said he was the best RB ever.
He missed 1 game, only 1 game. And that was his rookie year. Still cannot comprehend it. Could catch, throw, run, and his character was better than all 3. RIP Walter.
He was actually dressed to play in that game.....the coach just didn't put him in.

Best FOOTBALL player who ever lived. Not the best runner maybe (didn’t have the foot speed of some), but yes, the best player in terms of overall skills. His passing percentage is pretty high with several TD’s, he could place kick, punt, throw, run and block like a beast.

Look how on every single tackle, he lowered his shoulder, put his head down and drove into the defender. I remember him describing why he did that and sure enough you can see it in the videos. Going for every single inch and I think he said it hurt him less if he was hitting the defender

Walter was not the most physically gifted RB to ever run, but he had the most heart and the greatest determination I've ever seen. He was truly the "Rocky" of the NFL. Every college athlete should be forced to study Walter Payton.

He was the finest football player I have ever had the pleasure to watch. I was not a Bears fan. In fact, I was a fan of one of their NFC rivals. But he was a better football player than anyone who has ever played for my team. I have been a football fan since the early 70s, and he is my favorite player ever.

@@Charleybones Barry Sanders was the hardest to catch but also had many negative runs. Yes he was an incredible runner but I think Walter was a more complete back and #1 in my book. You can't go wrong with either one.
@@Charleybones Sorry but no. As spectacular as Barry was, you couldn't count on him in short yardage or goal-line situations, the Lions would even pull him from the game. Walter didn't have that problem. Walter was also the better blocker and the better pass-catcher as well.
In before Barry fans talk about Barry's O-line, he had 2 All-pros AT THE SAME TIME playing on it, Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover. In his entire career, Walter played with ONE All-pro offensive lineman, tackle Jimbo Covert in 1985. And that was the ONLY year he made it.,

The Lions just didn't find themselves in short yardage goalie situations wen Barry was playing. Barry's TD runs were usually outside of the 10 yard line. Look at these stats Vega: Payton averaged 4.4 yards per carry for his career. Barry averaged a flat 5.0 yards per carry for his career. Payton had 16,726 career rushing yards in 13 seasons. Barry had 15,269 in exactly 10 years. That's only 1500 yards less than Payton, and Barry played 3 years less. In fact, in Barry's last year he rusted for 1491 yards. So he may well have matched Payton career yardage in one more season. Payton had 110 TD's in 13 years. Barry had 99. Barry only had to run 3.3 TD's each year for the last 3 years to match Payton, and Barry would only have to run appr 500 per year for the last 3 years to match and beat Payton's all time yardage numbers. Jumping over a pile of people on the 1 yard line is not what makes a great RB. It's making 1st downs, finding a hole when your front line can't give you one, making multiple people miss a tackle and break free for a big run. It's about taking multiple hits and still moving forward with the ball. Its about nit fumbling the ball (Payton fumbled 86 times in his career, Barry only fumbled 41 times - yes, that's right. Look it up - Payton fumbled the ball twice as many times as Barry). I appreciate Payton's heart and his toughness, but I also respect speed, elusiveness, and the ability make a fool out of linebacker. Sanders proved that you don't have to run over a LB, you can run around him, run under him, or just leave him standing there or laying there with a broken ankle while you score a td.
@@Charleybones Barry is also the all-time leader in negative yards. All too often he would dance behind the line and try and break the big run and get stuffed when he should have taken the 5 yards off tackle and walked back to the huddle.
Payton had no weaknesess as a football player, Barry did. End of story.

I remember back to my youth growing up in the suburbs of Chicago back in the 70' /80's and we would always play pick up football, and I wanted the ball every time because I wanted to do those same moves that I watched the great walter payton do every Sunday. He was the best!

I was the top RB in my Pop Warner league & rushed for over 2,000 yards & scored over 30+ TDs. I was only 12 years old & had no clue about the NFL. But I asked my brother, "Who's the best RB in the NFL?" He thought about it for a second & said, "Eric Dickerson & Walter Payton!" I watched Sweetness in just one game and I fell in love with his obvious balls to the wall, all out 100% on every play style. I then ran with the same reckless abandon & started attacking defenses rather than using my speed. Well it turned out I became an even better RB with that style. You can check out my 70 yard TD run back in 1986 on my CZcams channel. I even taped my ankles up like he did & had my sweetness towel too. Lmao great memories. Salute!

Oh yeah, the greatest I have ever seen. Physically gifted, tough and a great person. He should have a statue, one of the best there ever was
NOBODY did it better.
Over his first 10 seasons, Payton was THE ONLY offensive player on his team to make the Pro Bowl. And during that stretch, he rushed for 13,309 yards, averaged 4.4 yards per carry, caught 373 passes, averaged 9.3 yards per catch, and scored 98 TDs. Opposing defenses didn't have to worry about the QB or WRs hurting them, so they stacked the box on every play to stop Payton. And they still couldn't stop him!

We watched Peyton in Seattle when he was rushing for the title. You should have heard the people of Seattle roaring for Peyton to break the record for rushing yards in one season. They were more excited about Peyton than the Seahawks.!! He didn't do it Seattle. Bummer.!!
