Mormon TEMPLE in Dublin?

  • The Limerick District of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is no more. It has ceased to be. It has shuffled off its mortal coil and joined the Dublin Stake. The entire Republic of Ireland is home to just one stake. And yet, the feeling amongst members is this is the prelude to a temple. After all, Scotland just got one announced.

My Nana, who worked at the church office building in SLC, as a land project manager or something, told me of huge $$$ contract signings, how she didn't have enough actual work for 8 hours, so had to use the church's gym to kill time. It's right in front of them, and they continue to pay tithing.

@tylerrickertsen But the point that Nemo is trying to make is that there is currently no need for a temple in Ireland. Back when I joined the church(1985) careful consideration went into temple building. Temples were and are very expensive buildings to build and maintain so you can’t just throw one up on any old street corner. In my day, the church took factors into consideration such as whether there were enough members in a given area to justify building a temple there. Now, President Nelson wants to open temples like those old Minnie Pearl Fried Chicken outlets in and around Nashville some years back. The company went bust due to over expansion. And so will the church if it keeps on building temples where they are not needed!

At 2:16. To put these numbers in Ireland into perspective, Utah wards usually comprise 3-6 city blocks. Since wards are so large (some have 450 attendees each week), stakes usually comprise four wards. I find it hard to believe that if the entire country of Ireland has 500 active members that could sustain a temple. My local temple requires a minimum of eight people at any time to staff it. That's usually on a weekday. On Saturdays they require a minimum of 14 people as staff since it is busy. Once is operation you want sessions to be in operation at normal hours. I have been to temples in Canada that cancel endowment sessions since there is so few people interested. It is also common to not have one married couple to be the witness couple. The workers grab two single adults to pose as a couple. This is in a country with 200,000 members. And we have 10 temples. How will Ireland manage with 4000 members, only 500 of whom are active?

  • @user-og2wt3le4j
    @user-og2wt3le4j Před 2 měsíci +6

A friend in Dublin told me her ward has to travel all day to get to the nearest temple in Preston, England. They usually make a whole weekend of the trip, taking Friday off and doing sessions all day on Saturday. They will have less time for the travel if the temple is built. The temple is not being built due to a huge number of active full tithe paying LDS members. The church has been making these decisions on temples since Nelson became prophet. Announce a temple in an area with few active members. The temple upon completion will not be able to get workers to man the temple positions. And the temple may only be open two days a week (unlike the usual five days) due to low attendance by members.

I actually live in Adelaide South Australia and my ears pricked up when you mentioned it. The Modbury chapel is not far from where I live and I know the location of the Firle chapel which is also not far away from me. I often drive past the Modbury chapel and it always seems to be a hive of inactivity.
I must admit that I don't have any contact with "Mormons" in my day to day activity. In fact I don't think I've ever knowingly had contact with Mormons, apart from a couple of missionaries visiting back in 1976 or thereabouts. Pairs of missionaries were quite common some years ago but I can't remember the last time I saw any. We also have a temple in Adelaide which is sitting on some very prime real estate.

Oddly enough when the French newspaper did a report about a Church purchased the old EDF state run French electricity HQ in Versailles. They interviewed Gerard Caussé. They were proposing to build the Paris France Temple. I sent the information to the unofficial Church Temple the news article. The Latter Day Saints Temple was contacted by the Church Office Secretary and was told to remove the article from the website.

Good video once again there Nemo.
On building a temple in Ireland, building one in Glendalough will not happen, not in a million years.
Enniskerry, maybe but expect a lot of objections from locals resulting in a refusal from Wicklow County Council. The LDS church will then make at least one appeal to the Planning authority, the whole thing could end up going all the way to the High Court and might eventually get approval but that will take years!
Clondalkin is by far the most likely site out of all those mentioned.
I see how you mentioned that the Dublin Temple doesn't necessarily need to be actually in Dublin. Here's one - Finglas meeting house is actually in Glasnevin, not Finglas! :-D Usually if you're from a dodgy area you pretend to be from the more respectable are right beside it, not the other way around!

I have to correct something in your bit about Adelaide. Firle stake was disbanded and Modbury became Adelaide North. There were other wards 'closed',these were Paralowie ward, Gulfview Hieghts ward, Morialta ward and Onkaparinga ward. My ward, Playford ward where I was a bishop 20 years ago, was expanded(!!) expanded, I tells ya! It's now Yoooge and stretches across the world famous wine growing district of The Barossa Valley (home of Jacob's Creek) all the way to Swan Reach in the Murray riverlands. Heaven help the Ministering Teachers or whatever they're called now. It's a four hour trip out there, each way.A lot of it on dinky country roads, the Motorway only goes about a third the way. Prospect chapel is supposed to be housing a new YSA ward and will take members of the disbanded Adelaide City branch (not a ward to the best of my knowledge.) Prospect chapel sits on land worth millions, so read into that what you will. Also not mentioned in the official email I received about these changes is what happened in the country units that were under city stakes.

I spent 6 months in Goolwa back in 2003 - when the 'motorway' to Adelaide was one way only and changed direction from morning commute into the city to evening commute out. With 'exits' on both sides - I was glad I wasn't driving on those occasions!

The site for an Edinburgh temple will most likely be between hearthill and livingstone. Their is a new hospital access roads , current road upgrades and 3 Village size housing schemes planned . Some of land had already been earmarked for religious purpose. If i was betting on it id have my money on the bathgate area. It would also have an Edinburgh postcode. Stirling is a good thought but as you probably already know. Scots are quite upset when places are not given correct recognition. Stirling is a bit outside the main glasgow/edinburgh m8 corridor. This is the most populated area. Stirling area is also national trust protected. Planning permission will be much harder. Planning has already made for the hearthill area m8 upgrade. In 10 years the open fields between Chapelhall and livingstone will a be housing. Their will be a need for new churches of all religious interests. Cheap land too.

Didn’t Joseph Smith at one point have a license to sell liquor and spirits?
Joseph Smith even obtained a liquor license to distribute alcohol from his home. Take a look at History of the Church, vol. 6, pg. 111, "Section 1 - Be it ordained by the City Council of Nauvoo, that the Mayor [Joseph Smith] of the city is hereby authorized to sell or give spirits of any quantity as he in his wisdom shall judge to be for the health and comfort, or convenience of such travelers or other persons as shall visit his house from time to time."
