    I was going nuts after my brand new to me (but previously used) brother embroidery machine kept birdnesting every single time I tried to embroider. I hadn’t done one embroidery successfully so I was defeated. After countless videos and trying to adjust the top thread tension, adding more stabilizer, taking away stabilizer, and generally loosing my mind, this video finally resolved my issue! I just needed to clean out all the dust underneath the bobbin holder. If only I had come here in the first place. Thank you!!! You’ve saved my sanity!

    Holy....I'm only 5 minutes in and I'm already mind-blown. I am a self-taught sewist with a 2nd hand machine, and I literally had no idea that you could remove the bobbin plate. Don't feel alone - you are not the only one that had no idea that the bobbin plate could be removed - it is just that I had the privilege of going on technical training several times, and watching a technician cleaning and servicing machines - so I know how important it is to keep the bobbin area clean.

    I had accidentally removed the little fuzzy thing you point out at 4:13. I didn't know where it went to once it was removed. Thank goodness I saved it. I came here to find out how to fix the tension on the bobbin figuring that's why it was so screwy but it was the missing fuzzy thing causing all the problem!! I replaced it and viola! Amazing how such a tiny weird thing can be so critical. Thank you thank you thank you.

      Hello,
      I am so pleased to hear the video was helpful - and that the machine is working perfectly again😀
      The bobbin case with the green paint on the screw is generally used for sewing and embroidery where you will use the recommended thread, which is usually included in the box when you purchase the machine.
      The tension is preset for the recommended thread at the factory - and the green paint "locks" the tension in for this thread only.
      However if you are going to be using different thread - other than the recommended one - it is best to use the bobbin case with the adjustable screw (the one without green paint on it), so that you can adjust the tension to suit the thread.
      You can order these bobbin cases from any Brother dealer.

    Great video thanks. My bobbin case started rattling and vibrating whenever it started stitching on a Brother machine I'd had for a few months, the stitching was bunching and tangling straight away. The only slight damage I could find on the bobbin case was a very, very small scratch on the underside. Anyway I changed out the bobbin case for another and it fixed it. It looks like this thing is very sensitive to any slight damage.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před rokem +1

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment.
      It is important to clean under the bobbin case on a regular basis - to avoid any build up that could make the bobbin case "unsettled" - as in the case of it sitting on top of a fluff build up.
      Try buffing the small scratch out with a silver or brass cleaning liquid.
      The bobbin cases aren't usually sensitive - but after a while the screw may need adjusting due to the spring losing tension over time.
      I hope this is helpful.
      Kind Regards,
      Sherine Haines

      Hi,
      Thanks for the reply...yes it is tempting to take it off, and for the machines with no sensors it is not really an issue.
      However, for machines with sensors, it can be tricky to put it back if you are not careful. I have had many a customer have a problem afterwards, resulting in a trip to the technician to put it back properly.😅
      This is why I advise to leave it alone.😊

    Very helpful. I had to remove the metal plate when my machine feed dogs kept eating up my knit fabric. It wouldn’t budge. But good to know. I am so used to needing to take whole thing off to clean the machine.

    Glamourgirl I just found out that you can remove the whole bobbin case. I'm self taught too. I've been self taught sewing sewing g for 40 years. Only straight stitches. I have brother sewing machine and couldn't understand how to use all the amazing stitches even when I used the brother manual that came with my machine. Most of the instructions in it are hard to understand and most of the illustrations aren't clear either. At least not for me. My husband looked at the manual too and he couldn't understand them either. We also tried to get the needle threader to thread using the manual and trying to just practice over and over. It was definitely hard to see the illustrations for it .

    I have a Brother machine where the plate is one piece. You say not to remove the back part of the plate, but mine is not two pieces. So to get the bobbin
    case out I have to removed the whole one-piece plate. I can get to the floor of this section with a brush to pick up the fuzz. I've never caused a problem
    doing this.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Emma,
      Yes - it will depend on the model.
      If you only have one piece, then you will have to remove that one piece.
      The only reason I discourage people from removing the back piece if there are 2 pieces, is simply because the machines that have 2 pieces generally have sensors underneath the back piece, and if the sensors get moved, then a technician will have to put them back in position before the machine will work.
      Not all machines have sensors, but for the ones that do, it is a sensitive issue.
      I hope this clarifies why I give this advice in the video 😀

      Hi Launa,
      Thanks for your comment.
      When stitching on any type of vinyl - please make sure you have a teflon foot on your machine.
      It is also often referred to as the "non-stick" foot.
      This helps the fabric to glide through and not get stuck - which is what will be causing the bunching.

    This was very helpful I have a SE1900 (US) and whenever I clean now and put everything back on the needle plate and cover hit the bobbin case and the machine is unusable. I'm putting the case in properly and tried a new case but unless my plate is on ridiculously loose and slightly lifted it will hit. I took it to a Brother-friendly shop but all they did was tell me the plate was too loose (I left it that way so they could see when it did NOT hit) and when he put it back together it didn't hit. I'm getting really frustrated as every other time I clean this occurs and it's unusable. Any thoughts? I can email a video

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před 3 lety +1

      Good morning Navreeta.
      I am so pleased to hear you found the video helpful.
      As far as skipped stitches go - this is usually a problem that stems from the needle.
      1. It could be that the needle is not suited to the fabric you are working on - for example f you have a ballpoint needle in the machine and you are sewing on a tightly woven fabric, the needle cannot penetrate the fabric, so it will skip stitches.
      2. Likewise if the needle is blunt - it also will not be able to penetrate the fabric successfully and skip stitches instead.
      3. Check that the needle is inserted correctly - so just loosen the needle bar thumb screw and make sure that the flat part of the needle is at the back and that it is in fact inserted all the way into the needle bar and then tighten the thumb screw securely again.
      4. If you are working with temporary spray adhesives, clean the shaft of the needle regularly with a little bit of acetone to remove glue build up on the needle, which can also caused skipped stitches.
      (Also change to a different reel of thread and see if it is also not just a problematic reel of thread that is causing the problem)
      If none of the above solve the problem, then it would be best to get the machine to a technician to check your machine timing.

    I am having trouble getting my bobbin case back in after cleaning. I think the dots on my case have worn down, so that's hard to know. But a bigger problem is what position the part under the case (turned by the flywheel) should be at. I keep turning the flywheel to get it to line up somehow with the bobbin case and it's not working. I can get the bobbin case back in but not really locked in.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před 2 lety

      Hi Harper - which model of machine do you have?
      Generally you need to have the needle at its highest point - so if there is a needle up/down button press that until the needle is up. If not - turn the flywheel by hand until the needle is in it highest up position.
      (If it is a Brother machine there is a line on the flywheel that should line up with the split in the casing on the side of the machine, and the line must be at the top of the flywheel, and not at the bottom or anywhere in between.)
      Take close look at the video and make sure that your bobbin case is in the same position as I have mine and it should slip right in and then when you turn the flywheel the mechanism should move smoothly and the bobbin case must not jump up and down.
      I hope this is helpful.
      If you still struggle please take it to your closest dealer who has a technician that can assist.

So my machine was sewing perfectly fine up until I had to replace the needle, while replacing the needle I accidentally dropped it in that hole that’s right underneath it, I ended up unscrewing the two screws that hold down the metal plate, couldn’t get to the needle so I turned my Machine upside down to get the needle out, I put everything back together afterwards, but for some reason my stitches are loose now & I’ve broken at least 4 needles trying to sew smh! What could I have done wrong? I’m pretty new at sewing & things I sew are pretty much simple and I have been able to get good tight stitches up until this issue.

      Hi,
      A quick tip for changing needles - always put a piece of paper or fabric under the presser foot when changing needles - then they can't slip into the machine.
      If your machine is breaking needles after having turned it upside down - it might be that the bobbin case has moved out of position - so please watch my video here to make sure it is back in correctly.

      I am so sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the bobbin case.
      Unfortunately, if there are no markings - then it would make it more tricky to get the case back in as easily.
      If it is in correctly, the flywheel must be able to move smoothly with the bobbin case remaining in place without jumping up and down.
      If you are still struggling - please take it to your nearest dealer and ask them to assist.
      If you try to start sewing without it being in correctly you can break needles and throw the timing out too - so it is not worth taking a chance.

    Can i adjust the tension multiple times if it will happen again? Or there's a limitation in adjusting it?

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před rokem +1

      Good morning Pomy,
      The screw can be adjusted multiple times.
      First adjust it to get the tension perfect.
      Then....when you find the tension becoming too loose again later, you can tighten it up by adjusting the screw.
      it gets tightened - because all tat is happening is that the tension spring is losing its tension over time from use.
      ( Kind of like how any other spring in other situations gets loose over time from being used😃)
      So....once you have adjusted it multiple times - and the screw can't be adjusted anymore, then it will be time to order a new bobbin case from your dealer.
      This does not happen that quickly though.
      Customers that use their machines a lot might only replace this part after a few years - some customers have not replaced theirs yet even after many years.
      It also depends on the types of thread you are using and whether you switch between various thicknesses of thread that you use on the bobbin.
      I hope this is helpful.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před rokem +1

      Good morning,
      The screw without the paint must not be adjusted.
      The screw that has the paint on it should theoretically also not be adjusted - as the tension has been pre-set at the factory for optimal tension - and the paint "sets" it.
      However.... if you do need to adjust you can adjust the one with the green pant on it - but it will move away from the pre-set tension. This is not a big deal if it allows you to set it for what you need it to be set at.
      You can also get replacement bobbin cases at your local Brother dealer.

      Hi,
      The tension screw on your bobbin case has been pre-set so that it works with the bobbin thread supplied with the machine. The paint is there to "set" the screw at that pre-set tension.
      You can still adjust it though - insert a small screw driver and it will break the seal of the paint - but do remember that if you want to use the same type of bobbin thread as supplied with the machine, you will have to re-adjust the tension screw again.
      I hope this is helpful.

      Hi Syre, if your machine does not have a sensor - then taking the metal plate off is fine - it is just if a machine has built in sensors under the metal plate that it is important to be extremely careful - because if the sensor gets knocked off or damaged it will mean that the machine will have to be taken to a technician.

      Hi Raman,
      Please heck that the feed dog is fully up, by shifting the lever at the back of the machine to the left and right several times.
      Perhaps it is stuck in between fully up and fully down.
      Just also take note that it will only pop right up after you lower and raise the needle once.
      I hope this is helpful.
      I will be posting more videos like this soon, and also doing other short courses on my new website. (Link below)

    My machine has 2 different needle plates, I highly doubt I am supposed to haul my beast of a machine into the shop every week or instance I need to swith back and forth to the straight stitch only needle plate. YOU CAN REMOVE the plate just as it says to do in every single brother manual that exists. I have been sewing on all sorts of machines from domestics of all brands to industrials and never heard such advice.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před rokem

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment.
      You are quite correct, you can change needle plates yourself on selected Brother models.
      Not all models have the interchangeable straight stitch plate option though.
      So, if your machine has the option to interchange - then it has been designed in a way that the owner/ user can easily change plates without any complications.
      However, owners of machines where there is no need to change plates, need not remove the plate when doing bobbin case maintenance.
      So my advice, just as a general rule while doing bobbin case maintenance, is to leave the plate on, simply because it is not necessary to remove it for this procedure.
      After having sold and worked on Brother machines for 30 years, I have seen it so often where customers can get the needle plate off easily, but then they are not able to put it back on properly, which can cause problems.
      I have had many customers bring their machines in to have their plates put back properly, after removing them to clean their machines.
      I have been able to help my customers, only because I have worked along side a technician who advises that owners of machines that don't have interchangeable plates should rather not remove them unnecessarily.
      However, I take do your point - and in future videos about topics like this I will make a note to mention the fact that people who have the interchangeable plates can take them off - but even then it is not necessary for the bobbin maintenance procedure.
      Have a great day.
      Kind Regards,
      Sherine Haines.

      Hi Charitha,
      If the motor is working, but the machine is not stitching it could be that the timing is out. Please take the machine to an accredited technician to look at.

      Hi Brenda,
      I am not familiar with your model of machine.
      I only do videos on the Brother brand.
      Perhaps if you could get hold of a manual for your machine model you might find some information in there?
      I am sorry I cant help, but as I say it is not a machine that I know at all, so I can not offer any advice.
      Kind Regards, Sherine Haines.

      Please check your needle. Often if you have the wrong needle or a BLUNT needle in the machine, it can cause skipped stitches. Here is the link to my video about needles.

    It's weird because on my bobbin case on my brother, the screws are in opposite positions. The one on the right is painted. It's a brand new case and tension is way too tight.

    • @SewandCraftStep-by-Step
      @SewandCraftStep-by-Step  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Steve,
      Please check that it is in fact a genuine Brother bobbin case, and not a generic one.
      Genuine ones always look like the one in my video.
      To adjust the tension always only adjust the screw with the single slot - as the one with 4 slots holds the case and spring together.
      I hope this is helpful.
      Kind Regards,
      Sherine Haines
