  • Richie Dotson plays 4 Pre War Gibson Banjos in one sitting: a 1925 Ball Bearing, an 11 with the large diameter tone hoop (looks like a flathead from the front), a 40 hole Arch top and a Flathead for tone and ballance comparison. #AcousticBox #RVABanjo

Can't believe how good the 'no tone ring' model sounds!

A very enjoyable video of comparisons with playing that made this old grandpa smile.

Thanks. Interesting how different they each sound. Thanks for taking time to do this video.

I got Flat top and arch top depending. I lean toward an archtop. Mine are not Pre War. But If someone could explain to my wife just why I need one.

I think the first one with the shotgun skirt sounded the best, but that’s my opinion I have a Sterling staghorn, but I’ll listen to all of them. I like the first one the best thanks for this. I appreciate you so much.

I think they all sounded decent too, and the last 2 were the best also.

All of them sounded decent, but the last two were the best of the bunch.

I have to have an archtop set up like Dr, Ralph Stanley had his. I love that tone,

Then listen to the Starday recordings and leave everything alone from the '80s on LOL... Slick heads and thin bridges and one ole boy from Kentucky absolutely ruined what what people thought the old pre war arch top banjos sounded like. They have depth and complexity... not that pingy, nasty, one-demential sound that they were selling much later than Ralph's 1928 TB-5 conversion. It was (and is) fantastic. So, get your hands on some real ones and leave the modern ones alone :)

Maybe it’s just me but the ball bearing sounded the best. BBs are tricky to setup but when they are loosened up and let them do what they are designed to do man oh man do they sound great

They all had a metallic tinny sound but maybe that’s due to the room you’re in or the microphone.

Unfortunately, this is an older video and we needed to upgrade microphones which we have now. My apologies. You may be able to find that information in the description below the video. Thank you again so much.
