  • After a closely driven 0-0 draw at the Camp Nou in the 2009 Champions League semi-finals Barcelona visited Stamford Bridge to play in what arguably was the most controversial game in the history of European football.
What do you think? Was this game fixed? Or was it just a bad referee?

The red card for Abidal was about as bad as the missed penalties. He didn’t even touch Anelka and got sent off for nothing. I usually don‘t like those matches where one side thinks that if you make enough penalty claims the referee will eventually be obligated to concede one - as if several half- or quarter-penalties will somehow sum up to a „full“ penalty. That‘s the way Brazil tried to provoke penalties during WC 2014 (six or seven ridiculous attempts in the Germany game alone). Get the crowd cooking, put pressure on the referee. Having said this, this match here is a different case altogether. Although not everything in this video was penalty-worthy, Chelsea should definitely have gotten two: one for that clear foul inside, not outside the box, and the other one for Piqué‘s handball. Very bad performance by the referee indeed.

On other hand Abidal won't be sent off so Barca won't lack 1 defender which is the cause for chelsea attack with pressure and Barca committing all the handballs, the outcome might be same with Barcelona scoring in the end. If Chelsea won this match by handball PK, its unfair to Barca as well since Abidal unfairly sent off.

The referee in my opinion is not corrupted as he did sent off Abidal when was not an obvious Red. Anelka was already falling down and even if Anelka was tripped, by the Barcelona defender, it was obvious from the replays that it was accidental, and in actual fact it was Anelka that kicked into the defender. It was also not a clear scoring opportunity as other Barcelona defenders were ahead. It would not make sense for a cheating referee, trying to help Barcelona, to send off one of their guys when Barcelona were already trailing. Apart from this, Mourada was a clear penalty as the referee agreed that it was a foul but misjudged that it was outside the box. There were also two handballs by Barcelona that should have been penalties, but they weren't given to Chelsea. Chelsea players are rightly so to be unhappy because of these bad decisions. . But even if we assumed he was a cheating referee, he would have no control or could ever have predicted that Inesta would score a wonder goal ourside the box in the last minute. I think the referee was just not good at his job and was scared to make tough decisions, especially because Chelsea players kept yelling at him, which caused him to make poorer judgement against Chelsea towards the end.

Foul on Malouda was outside the box, Drogba fell without help, Anelka fell without help.
