    These are by far the best skating videos on CZcams. Everyone else says "Today I'm going to teach you how to do crossovers", then does some crossovers, then says "And that's how you do crossovers". End of video… Thanks so much, and please keep going!

    I really like how you're breaking this down into simpler steps. When I was first taught crossovers in my lesson, the instructor was basically like, "here's what it looks like. Now you try." While this move is learned early on and therefore considered elementary, it's still quite difficult and I feel like a lot of people forget that. So thank you for this video

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Před 5 lety +32

      I am so glad you liked the breakdown. I have so many really young students that I feel just wouldn’t grasp it if I tried having them do it all in one shot. Plus they often lack the muscle control to do a proper crossover and I don’t want them creating bad habits that I will just have to fix later.

    • @chapin3206
      @chapin3206 Před 5 lety +15

      lol that's a problem I'm facing a lot. When I first started (I was taking public lessons), my teacher would simply perform the moves and ask us to copy. It was extremely difficult for me to get the basics down. We were never told about posture or the breaking down of even simple strokes. Even now, I still struggle with basics because of these bad foundations.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Před 5 lety +25

      It always amazes me when I hear about instructors NOT INSTRUCTING! It's crazy to assume that a student will improve by purely copying or by repetition. Moves need to be broken down so that a skater understands the mechanics. 😬

    • @kingsley2052
      @kingsley2052 Před 2 lety +2

    The kid in the back is a perfect example of things people who just view figure skating from afar _don’t_ see
    As someone who doesn’t actually figure skate but is learning, I’ve learned that everything I watched isn’t _just_ what figure skating is, there’s falling, there’s getting hurt, but there’s also getting back up and trying again

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Před 2 lety +3

      You are absolutely right. Skating takes a lot of unseen perseverance and resilience and the girl in the background certainly is a good example of just that.

    I used to skate decades ago and am at it again. I was ill in the last few years and need to rebuild muscles, flexibility, balance, and I am also older, much older. I am watching this because in my adult beginner class, we went from pumping in a circle to crossovers in 5 minutes without explanation, just a demonstration (!) and no drills in between. I can do the half swizzle, not the full crossover. The teachers are clueless! They show us something they can do and assume we will just copy them. Little to no explanation, and no building of the skills needed to go from one to the other. I was so disappointed this week… I suddenly wondered if I was in the wrong group. Some people could do it, most either did not do it or did it very clumsily. Teaching skills needed! Thank goodness for Coach Julia! I need to find public skating hours to go practice now.

    I love you so much, Julia! You're literally my savior! I'm a student at uni and the only way I get money from is tutoring English & Korean (I'm from Russia) and so I barely could afford Jackson Excels and some basic equipment for ice skating. Sadly, I'm still not able to have a coach, it's too expensive. But luckily, I have you ❤ Even though you can't tell me what my mistakes are, your tutorials are so detailed and informative that I don't really need you to see my mistakes, I can just rewatch the tutorial and improve it myself. And the fact that I learned stroking, swizzles, backwards skating, one leg skating, toe tip jumps, bunny hops, pistol, backward & forward crossovers, two feet spin, different stops, bilman, one foot spin and some more in just about 6 hours is crazy! The only factors that also helped me were me roller skating frequently and doing it confidently enough & my determination with strong love for ice.
    I just really wanted to tell you that you're like a fairy that makes people's dreams come true! Keep it up, please. Your work is worldwide helpful.
    I just turned 20, tho, a reminder that it's never late to start figure skating. Just do it for fun, no need to become an Olympic champion.

    This is amazIng! You are the first coach to talk about 'lifting the left toe' after the push before bring it back and start again. As you said, without lifting the left toe, the toe pick slows down or catch the ice. Excellent explanation.

      @@CoachJulia For some odd reasons, surprisingly many coaches lost chance when to insert toe lift instruction. In real life around me and youtubes, it is hard to hear toe lift. That is why I think yours are different and better. Same with toe pick landing in my case. Thank you for the perfect instruction. 😁

    These are excellent detailed lessons with great breakdown exercises. Thank you ! I would like more info on skating edges. When you lift your outside leg on a circle, does that automatically (due to balance adjustments or you would fall) put you on the outside edge of your inside foot, or are you doing that consciously? or is that a practice issue?

So after seven years crossovers on my "bad side," (clockwise rotation" seemed like I almost a beginner. This video extremely beneficial!
