    Man I can even begin to describe how I feel about these videos; I just found your channel last week and I’ve watched at least 20-30 videos already. It’s so interesting in too many ways to explain; down to every detail. Even your dad explaining that this was a tradition for you all was truly amazing.
    I wish I could do these kinds of things but sadly I think it’s out of the question for me. I’m 6’6-6’7 around 230-240ish year around but I broke my neck when I was 10 and think I would have a hard time crawling and squeezing because of that.
    But this is so interesting to me! I would never go cave diving or any of that but the ocean is so cool; just sketchy and where I broke my neck at effects your breathing here say so I don’t think tanks are for me lol. But this? I could convince myself to do this somehow, someway. Just really feel I wouldn’t be able. I’m 40 now but my brothers and I had all kinds of fun climbing cliffs and going in holes, hunting and fishing back in the 80’s and we didn’t have adult supervision. It gives you a confidence in yourself to make good decisions and take care of yourself. Its a powerful gift you’re giving your nephew that most other kids in this day and age won’t have. I do the same when bushwalking in a place I do not know well with forks in the route. I leave arrows made out of rocks to indicate which direction I came from when a path has forks for my return. It is amazing how different a path looks like when walked the opposite direction. A path you think you remember can look very different on the return. Easy to get lost. I rarely have to do this as I have a very good memory and sense of direction. One time I did this and was glad I did. I was 5 hours out from the car park, had only met one other person in the five hours of walking. I realised when I got to the end of the track that the path I was on had become an animal track, not human. It just ended and was very hard to follow. Without the return arrows I would have struggled.

      The lava bed's national monument has a lot of public caves. There is also one near weed California called Pluto's cave which is listed publicly. There are often people in the entrance to that cave but very few people walk to the back. Even fewer people are willing to crawl beyond that or even know about it. I recommend elbow pads and knee pads and and finding that crawl at the end of Pluto's cave.
      Many of the excellent caves in northern California are currently difficult to get to due to the wildfires.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  Před rokem

      There's generally just better ways to Mark directions then what most people might assume. Using anything to Mark directions is fine but there's just easier ways. We use rocks available in the caves. We know how to place them without having to create an entire Arrow so that we know which direction is the way out.
      If someone is just going to go caving once they are likely to use string but it is probably not necessary. If you need to use rope or string to mark your route then you're probably not going to have enough anyways.
      And the truth is, most people who cave a lot just memorize the cave. Even if mistakes are made we can always find our way out. Just like driving through your neighborhood we create a mental map to navigate and that's a lot easier than stringing your way through a cave and creating a huge mess.
      But I have used string at times. Just not very much as I have learned better ways to navigate

      Scary is a more individual matter. Driving on a crowded freeway scares me. Caves must not, as I jump in Calvin’s truck when I see him loading caving gear. Caveman’s dad

      We have our times, but not often. As the senior caver, I am more careful now. There is NO rescue personnel crew even remotely close. Thanks for watching
