  • I've watched a lot of gem faceting tutorials and they all have one major flaw: You cannot tell what they are doing. So I decided to create a digital model showing exactly what is happening and closeups of the cutting of the facets. I hope this helps to make it very clear and easy to follow along.
These take a long time to make, almost as long as faceting an actual stone, so if you like it, please consider subscribing.

Finally! A gem cutting basic beginners video that shows what to look for and what steps to take at what time and why, rather than someone grinding and looking through a loop. I have watched maybe 40 of them. This video gives great information in a very short time. I'm at the point where faceting looks fun and worth while but need more basic info before laying out cash to actually do it, and this may do it.

Thank Greg. You pretty much summed up my who reason for doing these videos... I'm a very visual guy and so I am glad these visuals were helpful. I also can tell you that I got a lot of my initial teaching from a book called "Faceting for Ameteurs" by Glenn and Martha Vargas. Very old, but it lays out a basic foundation of information

I'm cutting my first stone, and ran into the break facets meetpoints problem. I tried using the cheater, but that resulted in re-cutting the mains. After hours of googling I found your video and problem solved. Thank you!

Glad it helps someone! I actually think I helped myself a lot when making this. It made it so easy to see how compounding errors could cause a lot of issues later down the road.

So if you're rough is an "Ideal" piece, then it will have been preformed to a cylinder. But much of the time, this is not the case. I use a preforming machine to get my rough to the shape I want before I start faceting in the shape so that I'll already know how long to make the facets and this can take some of the guesswork out. But there's always more than one way to do things. This is just my way. The machine I created also roughs-out the basic shape as well.
