Can you live for $10 a day in Bangkok? I took the $10 challenge in Bangkok. Cost of Living in Thailand is put to the test in this video. After releasing my other Bangkok Cost of Living video I received many comments about how expensive Bangkok has become. Yes it's true, you could spend tons of money to live in this city.
But....is it possible to live for a day on 300 baht, which is $10 USD? Watch the video and find out.

this is the best comment of the day for me so far. because this was EXACTLY the point of the video. not that you can live all-in for $10/day in Bangkok. But that you CAN live cheaper here than any western city (which many people say you can't). there is no way you can go eat 3 meals like that for $1 - $2 each. awesome to see your comment man, thanks!

It's not that good. They are greasy and fluffy. You won't want them often. and if you eat meat, good luck. When you add up all the actual costs of living, it can be as much or more than many cities in the U.S. But, just like many cities in the U.S. you can find very low cost places to live and eat...but the great majority of westerners would not even be able to live like that here. Really.

The place that sells good and cheap foods are usually in the evening markets, they costs around $3-$5 for each option. I own a Thai restaurant on Hawaii island (USA) and the rich people here (y'know the old money folks with cheap flip-flops but has metal credit cards) preferred foods that are Non-GMO, local produces, gluten-free, no msg, no dyes, and 100% vegans....etc at the triple priced of what we normally eaten in Thailand. Yes you can find foods like that in Thailand but just don't buy CP products the ones in 7-Eleven, those are gross.

I have been to Bangkok loads and when people ask is it expensive the simple answer is.. yes and no.
Buy lunch and a beer in the 5/4 star hotels and you can easily part with 30/35 euro.
Have a drink on the rooftop bars and your talking 15 euro plus per drink.
Go to the Koh San Roads, Nana etc areas and prices in bars are close enough to what you'd expect to pay in the west. tuk tuk's also will charge you ten times more what they would charge a local. I know this because I hopped in one with a local and it was like 65 cents for a journey which the day before was 10 euro.
This Gentleman in the video is showing what it is like to live like a thai person in Bangkok. Not the kind of experience you want when you are on holiday though. So with that in mind, for a holiday, Bangkok is reasonably priced

The meal you had in the evening was Nam Prik Kapi (Chile Sauce made from shrimp paste) topping with Chaom Tod (Fried Acacia Penata with egg). This dish is very and truly Thai! The sauce itself is similar to Sambal of Indonesia and Malaysia. The chive dumping may look similar from the outside but the taste is different too. One sign that easily indicating is there's no pine woods or tree in or around BKK naturally unlike in Florida. it signifies BKK is lower in latitude and hotter. There's pine wood just up in the north of Thailand or up on the mountains above 700-800 m.

This video really captured the essence of life in Bangkok. I lived there for 5 years and I really miss just walking around seeing all the interesting people and the general energy of the place. When I lived there, I think I spent between 300 - 1000 on food and transport and about 200 baht a day on my rent/amenities but some days it could get by on as little as 200 baht.

Living in Bangkok on $10 a day is not the subject of the video. There is a farang in Pattaya who did a video about living down there for $500 a month including rent and food and entertainment. That may be more the kind of video you're looking for.

If you save the 52 for drink and the 20 for dessert and 20 for flowers, then you save 92 per day. Then you have 630 per week. then you can use that 630 for a dinner in upscale restaurant. This means you can go to an upscale restaurant once per week. so you will feel you have a high quality life if you get into the habit of spending only on necessaries. that's what I and my friends did in high school - from frugal Taiwanese.

I’ve been in Bangkok for 11 years. What I have found that if you live in the same style you would in the US, it will cost more, a lot more to live in Bangkok. So a house, car, school and electricity are easily more expensive. Yes Thai street food is cheap. I love the local Thai Chicken Rice for 35 baht just outside my neighbor hood.
My electricity ranges from $450 in the winter to $750 in the 9 month summer. It is so expensive that it might hurt to have an electric car? Cars suffer a huge tax disadvantage and will cost up to 300% more to buy. I drive a Ford SUV, assembled in Thailand and it was only $62k. Buy something not made or assembled in Thailand and it will cost you a surprising about.
My kids are really young but I’m looking at $5000 a month for their school next year.

I've lived in Thailand for just over a year now and I can tell that if you choose so you can pretty easily push through a day with 10 bucks. But me currently living here I tend to live a lifestyle that is similar to the kind of lifestyle that I had back in uk which is eating out in the restaurants in comfort with AC and not on the street. Going food shopping to Tesco lotus or any other supermarket and not market stalls outdoor. And from my experience that lifestyle is equal if not more expensive in Thailand than that in UK... Not to mention utility bills and other costs involved with living here.
Also another thing to mention Thai salaries, regular Thai jobs pay approx 10-20k Thai bhatt per calendar month...
So if you coming to Thailand for a week or two to wonder around the streets and have street food in scorching heat you can squeeze by on the cheap. If you want to have comfortable week or two with AC and taxi fares or sky train it will cost you considerably more. So much more that sometimes it happens to be more than in western countries...
    Just my personal opinion
