- Mechanics of Materials stress and strain example problem that uses Hooke's Law to find the normal stresses in a concrete post with steel bar reinforcement when a know axial load is applied to the top. Finding the total strain in the post first so that we can use Hooke's Law to solve for stress in the concrete and stress in the steel bars.

Problem 2.35The 4.5 Ft concrete post is reinforced with six steel bars, each with a 1 1/8 inch diameter. Knowing that Es=29x10^6 psi and Ec=4.2x10^6 psi, determine the normal stresses in the steel and in the concrete when a 350 kip axial centric force P is applied to the post.
