- English - Welcome to another train presentation from Schony747. You will see new train presentations on a Thursday.
SSR is a freight company based here in Australia. Most of it's operations are in Victoria and New South Wales. Many of the locomotives are old enough to be running around in a museum. SSR do a fantastic job keeping these old things running. Rail enthusiasts love the locomotive combinations as the older stuff has character and sound that you don't always get from the moder locomotive.
All trains featured in this presentation are still running with SSR in 2019. The youngest locomotive is 442s1 (former 44230) which went into service July 1972. The oldest is B61 from August 1962. These trains are seen running in Victoria on both Standard Gauge and Broad Gauge. SSR hauls grain trains here in Victoria and other light engine movements.

This is awesome. Nice to see real old stuff still running. The GP11s on my local shortline in the US were built in 1957 and I'm pretty sure they have the same prime mover as these things. Not sure, but sounds the same.. Love the sound of them revving up and cool to see that it's a sound heard on the other side of the world as well as in my backyard in Pittsburgh!
There are still a number running around in Victoria. We are so lucky to see these running a number of times a week!
It's great to see these older engines being used in revenue service.
Great for us! Not sure how the crews feel about these museum pieces
Brings back memories here in the USA along the Hudson line on the New York central!
And don't we all wish we had more running around today!
good to see a company that preserves some vintage locos and keeps them in actual service.
SSR are famous in Victoria for the old EMDs they keep using. Apparently it's lots of work but there must be some value in it.
Another thing I like about SSR is that they don’t paint every one of their locos in the SSR livery so most of the time you get a nice lash up with different coloured locos
Yes indeed. Old locos with lots of variety. Thanks for looking
Awesome. It’s like driving a fully restored classic muscle car for work.
Yeah like an antique Road show on rails 😀😀😀😀
It's nice to see reminders of a bygone era still utilized in this day and age.
Yes and they won't be going anywhere soon either. SSR have just purchased some of the older CLP / F for use on their trains.
All the power you’ll ever need 💪
Hi Schony! Did you see the name of locomotive B61, "Bernie Baker"? That locomotive in the Streamliners Australia livery is named after Southern Shorthaul Railroad's locomotive driver trainer, Bernie Baker from Parkes in New South Wales - as you mentioned in a reply to a comment, they have just purchased CLP10 and are in the process of restoring her. I should know - I was one of the 450 people who donated to Bernie's crowdfunding campaign to keep CLP10 in Australia
Yes I donated as well. It's a worthwhile cause as well.
It makes me really happy to see so many Carbodies' still in service down under. I wish they got the had the same level of long term use here in the US. Would love to see a UP F7 in front of a main line freight over Donner Pass (Id rather it be SP but thats besides the point). Can an Aussie Foamer tell me why exactly Carbody type diesels have remained in operation/manufacture for so long?
To me it would make perfect sense to run the newer stuff. Obviously some companies such as SSR see value in the old bangers which is surprising as I'm told they take alot to maintain.
In America, we refer to the GM class as "F-Units" because they were built for freight trains. They are legendary for saving the US rail industry and their design.
The "F" designation does not stand for Freight. It originally stood for Fourteen hundred, the horse power rating of the original engines used.
When our CL units were rebuilt, they were given the designation CLP for passenger and CLF for freight.
F's were 2 axle units. These are 3 axle trucks, so would be the E-class on US roads...
@@Lobotomy59 They were actually based on the F units, but needed the Co-Co wheel arrangement (the E units used A1A-A1A) to lower the axle load for Australia's much lighter tracks. And a few other modifications like fitting a smaller loading gauge.
@@Lobotomy59 But that's were things diverge, the E class had two engines but the CL class had one as has the CLP/F rebuilds And the VR S, B and A class loco's.
Great looking old locomotives. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for looking 😀😀
Schony747 hello, I have never seen double ended locos before, if there any in USA, never seen any on the EAST COAST , typical, 1 loco, & a power pack, Then the other loco facing the other direction., those GTRAAT EMDZs with 2 cycle engines , Cheers from NJ....USA
excellent. many thanks. please keep em coming.
Thanks again 😀😀
Great hearing those old 567's revved up!
Yes. Anything this age sounds fantastic
Wow these are some beautiful locomtives
Yes back in the day when locomotives had a bit of character.
Schony747 cant argue that alot of them today just look the same
All engines were great,
especially the train coming through the lighted area pulling the flat cars, they were very shiny, like brand new!!!
The HCMT was brand new if that's what you're referring to
I am glad to see the 600 class from South Australia is still running in other state's, here it's on a narrow gauge track in Ceduna pulling gypsum. Great video
Thanks. Yes the old stuff still keeps soldiering on!
Haven't seen those in ages, thanks.
Thanks for looking 😀😀😀😀
Nice collection of locomotives, and they looked in pretty good condition. Liked the various location shots.
I love the bulldog style
Yes everyone's favourite over here.
Great selection! I love the street running shot. Great sound at 5:00. 6:03 with the train through the rainy station is very atmospheric.
Thanks! Where have you been. I haven't seen any comments from you for ages 😀😀
@@Schony747 I've just got a lot of catching up on things to do. I keep getting distracted by things, I need to get on with the important stuff, like catching up on videos :D
Another Great Video. I especially like B61 & B75 they look a little like our Class 55 "Deltics"
Roger 😎 UK 🇬🇧
I do like the Deltics! They did bring a bit of excitement to the East Coast. Thanks for your contributions and I hope everything is ok for you in the UK Roger.
Brilliant. keep up the good work.
Thanks always 😀😀
Awesome stuff once again . . .
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
Fine video good job love the old F Units we still have a few here but thinning out every year
Yes same over here. The new stuff takes over the classic stuff. Fortunately there are a number in preservation in Victoria
Awesome
Yes. Thanks for looking 😀😀
Wonderful video! If I ever go to Australia I know what I'm doing!
Thank you. When I head overseas again that's exactly what I will be doing.
Superb captures. Greetings from India 🇮🇳
Thanks for looking at the channel.
extremely good-looking trains
Back then everything was built with a bit of style.
@@Schony747 yes indeed
Man, this is so cool.
Thanks for looking
nice awesome catches
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
Awesome . . .
Thanks 😀😀
Wow. I had no idea.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for looking 😀😀😀😀
In Germany it is normal that Locos produced in the late 1950s are still very active in regular service, mostly as freight locomotives. The type 140 electrical locomotive, for instance, was first produced in 1957, with a total production of about 900 copies. It was withdrawn from service with the Deutsche Bahn (German national railways) in 2016, but there are several private railway companies that operate a large number of modernised type 140 locos, and they are highly appreciated for their reliability and ruggedness. There are several other types, such as shunting locomotives and even express-train locos from the fifties and early sixties that received new equipment or in some cases new engines which are are still in widespread service today...
My sister lives in Germany and I see old locos running around. It's great to see the old locos still running around. Thanks for looking.
04:43 That sounds so good! and lady up top got a great view. 07:25 I like this green and yellow locomotive. Cool Video!
Thanks. The videos with the older stuff seem to be pretty popular 😀😀😀😀
@@Schony747 Only older stuff I seen is in Taiwan. No classic EMD like these.
awesome video Schony747 :)
Thanks Mate 😀😀
A fantastic video - it’s like the Triang Transcontinental range brought to life in 12 inches to the foot scale:-))
I had many of these in Hornby HO when I was a kid!
They were great - the motors also sounded like the whine of the real thing! Easy to pick up on EBay now and much more character than the latest super detailed models!!
great video
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
It is very difficult to beat an EMD (General Motors) locomotive for longevity, dependability and reliability.
This is true. Look at B61 still running around after all of these years.
True dat, still have some SD40's, GP9s, and GP38's running around in Ontario even when Canadian National and Canadian Pacific have newer stuff like SD70's and GE ES44 Evolutions.
@@Schony747 dont you think that its werid austrlia has a double cab emd f unit
@JS317Productions then what is it
it kinda looks like a little joe
Nice Coverage..
Thanks 😀😀
A premium video. ♡ T.E.N.
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
3:10 Bro the tracks😭
The zoom in makes the condition worse than it actually is. It's a grade 2 freight track.
The best thing besides the locos that I grew up with is NO GRAFFITI on the covered hoppers
Yes and there was a bit of respect as well. V/Line Freight, VR all displayed their logos on the side proudly.
Enjoyed the video and l have subscribe to your channel.
Thanks for the sub! Your layout looks great. I'm a bit of a British Rail fan myself.
B75 is my fav. I like the CRL livery
It's a livery that certainly stands out and is a nice chsnge to the regular liveries we see
We still having a loco shortage. This particular location is unique in it's layout
Loco shortage or SSR choosing to persevere with the old stuff.
Oh nice vedio
Thanks for looking 😀😀
They're all older than me except 442s1 (just by 5 months). Still working harder too lol.
I was born in 1970 so most were in service well before my time as well.
THANK ME LATER!
2:12 - Did I hear sheep go baaaaaa? even they are excited to see the trains...
Yep. That's a Victorian country town for you 😀😀
Other than the "tourist" and "Excursion" trains, these similar diesels, E-*s, E-9s, PA-1s, F units, are not really used anymore in mainstream American Passenger and freight service if I'm not mistaken. One thing though watching this video is the distinct sound of these diesel locomotives working. Thanks for posting this. It conjures up some great memories for me!
Thanks 😀😀😀😀. It's one of my better performing videos for the reasons you just mentioned.
because ALCo, EMD and even GE got itself to the aussie market
Great vid!! Shame they can't get up the n.e anymore. Love ssr keeping theese old girls going! And the track is in such crap condition everywhere!
Qube don't do a bad job with the 80 class when they visit from NSW 😀😀
New Zealand uses flee similar to those also. The DC locomotive is from 1950. Actually Australia built and supplied us with DMUs and motive power.
Martinius Rail bought some.
Very nice, a Qube one next week then?
Once I get some more video yes!
S317 and I have something in common, we will both be 60 years old in December Too TooT
And both still looking marvellous I'm sure 😀😀😀😀
Some really amazing footage and rare captures! Is that a new Xtrapolis being hauled at 7:20?
That is not an x'trapolis it's a high capacity
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
Are all of these streamliners preserved ? Because over here in the us theres a good number in preservation
The only streamliners in preservation in Victoria are B74, S303 and S313. NSW has a few in preservation as well. Otherwise all are in current mainline freight service which is pretty impressive!
Very nice. Those "Old Girls" can still do the work they were created to do with dignity. Perhaps a nice new paint job would give them a better look commensurate with that dignity. Nevertheless, hats off to the SSR for maintaining these old locomotives.... they look great! So much better than the bland machines we see today.
Yeah hats off. I know it takes alot of work. I often wonder why they don't use the newer stuff.
@@Schony747 why dont you send them an email and ask them? It must be a work of passion, in which case im pretty sure theyll send you a reply. Awesome video mate!
Awesome.. how many horse power
The older locos have a lower rating so you need a lot of locos to even get close to some of the modern locos such as the NR for example.
5.05 that EMD has a great exhaust note, a bit more guttural than the others.
Yes but all are very impressive!
@@Schony747 Agreed but S317 was different is there a reason for that you know of?
Not 100% sure to be honest. I like my trains but my knowledge isn't that good!
austrlia has alot of emd locomotives
They do indeed. A true sign of the builds reliability and confidence shown in the model.
Great video footage here. Just a couple of questions. At 6.10 what is going on with that unique confinement and what is that odd looking car at 8.35?
610 was a new train transfer. The new train had a consist of flat wagons as brake insurance for the new train. 8 minute the van in the back is a power van. Later on in the day the locos would transfer an Alstom Xtrapolis back to Melbourne from Ballarat and needed a power car as the locos weren't fitted with it.
Thanks so much for your reply.
Everything except the locos and consists look so.....English. Including the rain. I didn’t know it rained In Australia.
oh it does and Melbournes the closet thing Australia has to London
fox 6 . Well I never.... must take a look round with Street View.
fox 6 Hobart has you covered in the cold department
Oy! *Nasty* , nice throttle down - 5:00
Sounded really good didn't it!
that looks older then a 47 year old and 50 year old locomotive
B61 entered service in 1950 so that gives you an idea of the age of these locos.
Have you any footage of a dual gauge points? I am from Ireland and Victoria is almost unique in having the same rail gauge as Ireland. I presume in time all mainline track will be standard gauge.
Check out Marcus Wong Rail Gallery. Heres the link.
railgallery.wongm.com/page/search/
To answer the second part - Interstate to South Australia and NSW will be SG. Any freight only lines in Victoria such as Mildura will all be SG. Any freight that shares lines with BG V/Line passenger will stay BG for the time being. So there is still a fair bit of BG track in this state.
At 3:10 that is some nasty looking track.
Even though the zoom makes it look worse that what it is, it's still pretty ordinary.
Looked bad
4:18 i've never seen a EMD F2 double cabin
Specifically made for The Victorian Railways back in the 1950s. That's what VR asked for and that's what they got.
What's up with the parallel rail on the one side of the track?
Dual Gauge Track. The inner track on the left is for Standard Gauge, the outer is for Broad Gauge
@@Schony747 that was what I figured. Nice to see these engines in such nice condition.
Australia still run any steam? I believe 2010 was the last Canada saw steam on the mainline. Nothing beats the sound of a steam train. And some of the whistles are so eerie.
Spencer Arthur yes but in preservation only
B375 loco double cabin looks like wcm 1,5 locomotive
And the only cab type in the world as well
7:14 Were these dead in tow or DPU power?
7:22 What are these? Passenger cars, obviously, but was this a movement of a set or just extras being hauled somewhere for whatever reason?
All locos were on line for the transfer. This was one of the early new HCMT train transfers and as such needed the extra locos and flat wagons for brake insurance. Now it's a couple of locos with the train only.
or maybe newer than that because E-Units were still being made after EMD stopped making them
Am I seeing dual gauge in some of this shots of is that an electrified 3rd rail?
Dual Gauge. Broad Gauge on the outer tracks and the track on the inner left is Standard Gauge.
@@Schony747 Real tight difference between the two!
Brad Johnson only 165mm between them.
Now if their auto products were as quality made
There's always been that rivalry between Ford and Holden. Our family had Holden foe years but recently rhe off shore stuff hasn't been that great.
Needs more clag!
Not if the environmentalists have their way 😀😀
I wonder if these trains are like the same models as the f units in america
Pretty similar and manufactured under licence here using the same design as the USA.
4:17 is that a EMD E7 Double Cab?
Yes indeed or something similar.
NO! not a E7 or similar.
The E7 design and components pre date these locos by 15-20 years.
The E7 was from a much earlier time and place.
Just a coincidence that they look similar. BTW, I photoed 3 PC and one CRI&P E7 in the past. They are all scrapped. Only 1 E7 remains, in Pennsylvania.
interesting how the horns are mounted on the nose...
There's more room on the nose for more much louder horns 😁😁
@@Schony747 what about the roof???
Maybe railroads in the good old u.s.a could learn a thing or to . Just because a locomotive has a little age on it doesn't mean it can't still get the job done. It's called preventive maintenance . Alot cheaper than spending millions on new one's all the time. Seen u.s. railroads scrap newer locomotives than these. What a waste. Great video nice to see the old war horses still getting the job done after all these years. A true testament that new is not always better and that things wear built to last back then.
The fact that these locos are still running around is a testament to the build quality and reliability. Having said that, the newer locos are far more powerful and generally have less failures than the old girls.
6:35 it seems like Indian platform.
No.
Dude
James
The B75 is a Hungarian M61 Nohab!
B75 came along about 10 years before any M61 Nohab even existed
Barnabás Balogh no.
2:20 is the famous WDM1 of Indian railways
That's ex Victorian Railways S317
SUCHISMITA MITRA no.
These diesel locomotives we have those in United States
Great video once again
Just a couple of questions.
What is all that earthworks they are doing between West Footscray & Tottenham?
The line that runs through Wycheproof is that slated to be converted to Standard Gauge?
Those double S Class running through Kensington look & sound awesome. Catch up regularly with them in Kensington when I visit my mechanic Gary at Silver Repairs @
444 Macaulay Rd Kensington.
Sad to see SSR grain wagons graffiti they do such a great job SSR keeping them graffiti clean but it must be costly. Just had my work van graffiti on absolutely disgusting how these arseholes have no respect for people's property, just want to catch one of them they never do it again.
How many C Class does SSR operate?
Have you a list of the loco's that have recently fallen to the blow torch alongside Dynon Rd?
What ever happen to the CLF Loco that was park up to the entrance of Qube park or Dynon Facility couple of years ago must of been there at least 3 years & the Union Pacific Yellow passenger wagon.
I remember when both of them turned up, I checked out the wagon so old school within a week graffiti & smashed windows. I kept an eye on it but never caught anyone same with the CLF too
Keep the great video's rolling in.
How about a video at the level crossing on Sunshine Rd there with the Kilmore Stone Train.
Thinking of a train spotting cafe in Middle Footscray do you think it's a good idea?
Wycheproof is listed for conversion to SG. All CLPS to my knowledge are at Goulburn. SSR have purchased a few. All PN A class except A78 got the case axe along with a T class from memory.
Schony747 yes, T400 got scrapped, along with the A’s.
The rails are so bad in some of these locations
Yeah just a bit bumpy
CRL streamliner's nose like bullet train and passenger airplane! Wooow cool! I like this locomotive 👍🏻❤❤ 🚅🚅🚅
Cool livery as well
Please, can all you Aussie's agree with me that those GM bulldog nose diesels look far better than ANY European diesel loco?
also, since these loco's don't have those ugly A$$ bumpers!
All hail the GM567!
The sad part is all the bull dog nose locos left are either in dead lines or museums.
Yes we are sooooo lucky to still have these icons running around.
Awesome
Yes very. Thanks for looking
