- Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Hérode's aria from Hérodiade by Jules Massenet at a concert with Renée Fleming in Moscow, 2006
Sentir battre ton coeur
D'une amoureuse ardeur!
Puis mourir enlacés...dans une męme ivresse
Dans une męme ivresse...
Pour ces transports...pour cette flamme.
Ah! sans remords et sans plainte
Je donnerais mon âme
Pour toi mon amour! mon espoir!
Vision fugitive! c'est toi!
Qui prends toute ma vie!
Oui! c'est toi! mon amour!
Toi, mon seul amour! mon espoir!
I just saw this again. Wow. Pronunciation is off, but who cares. Wow. What an incredible performance. Stunning. Incredible. Fantastic. What a loss to the world was his untimely.passing...
He is fabulous, baritone, my favorite of all of them, and man is he good looking too.

I am reminded that for those of us who sing and try valiantly for diction that Joan Sutherland was star and sang mush. But what a voice. Yeah, the French is a bit strange sometimes. But he could be singing about taking the dog to the vet and I wouldn't care. One of his best. This aria is about a guy lusting after his wife's daughter. He'd get hot enough to blow the words if he was fluent. As to the person who thought he didn't like the ending? The ending was fine.
Critics are to art what pigeons are to statues.
His pronunciation is by no means perfect but adequate to the task. What I miss is the conviction that would have come if he knew exactly what he is singing about. Or maybe he is just not an actor. Look at the eyes. But, then, what a voice!
¿Cuando le podremos ver en Madrid?
he most def made up a couple of words...
OK, yes, the pronunciation was off a bit. At least he generally knew what he was saying. Unlike the orchestra. So here's a guy talking about how he would give up his soul to see the vision of this woman he so keenly lusts for and the orchestra looks and sounds like they're on their way to make coffee in the wee hours of the morning. Using a clarinet instead of a saxophone set the stage for an uninspired, thoughtless, and drab accompaniment. Massenet basically orchestrated an orgasm - hence the saxophone. The orchestra thought they were accompanying someone taking out the trash. Hvorostovsky should record this now if his health would allow. Oh damn. I just checked and he passed away. What a terrible loss. Oh no.
His poor diction and his disrespect of Massenet's score, especially nuances and delicacy of details, plus the fact that the orchestra is completely out of the topic, cannot be forgiven by the sheer beauty and strength of the voice, and even in this matter, there are things I could say. Don't be mistaken, I don't wan't to disrespect a dead artist. I truely admire Hvorstovsky, he is a great one. But he had the means to do so much better. I deeply regret he did not work that piece more seriously and with a better conductor.
Amazing voice and presentation, terrible french.
