    Verdi wrote 27 operas in his lifetime. "Ernani",opera in 4 acts, based on Victor Hugo's drama "Hernani" was written in 1844. It was a lesser known opera. But this aria of King of Castile from "Ernani" is one of my favoured, as sung by Dmitri Hvorostovsky.When Dmitri magnificent voice reverberates on stage, I can hear a voice of eternity.

  • @susanpezzino6734
    @susanpezzino6734 Před 6 lety +34

    Yes, Giga, this clip brings thoughts of eternity, particularly when H. sings:
    ...della virtù com'aquila
    sui vanni m'alzerò,
    ah! e vincitor de' secoli
    il nome mio farò.”
    (Like an eagle I will raise myself
    on the wings of my virtù,
    ah! and I will make my name
    as the conqueror of centuries.)
    The lyrics here may be about Charles V’s political conquest of world-wide kingdoms but they bring to mind H’s artistic conquest of world-wide audiences. Maestro, R.I.P.

    Yo! Excellent! This is a fantastic aria, but quite evil to sing as that cello accompaniment is tenuous to say the least, and keeping pitch and timing must be extremely challenging especially in a big house. The Met Live version demonstrates that, as the stage and theatre are so cavernous he is having to watch the conductor like a hawk, and you can hardly hear the thready cello accompaniment. Here he is at his best.

    Great voice, but he gets a little too cute on things the way I hear that Fischer-Deskau did in his last years. Overall really fine, but a tendency to be too affected--portamentos where traditional they would not be placed. I don't mind the lack of the high A. I've heard it both ways and while it is impressive for baritones to hit it, this is one number that sounds better dramatically without it. As opposed to the end of Rigoletto where McNeill tossed it in and it was dynamite.

He really should sing the way he did when he won Cardiff's Singer of the world contest back in 89! There he sings much more open. It's got nothing 2 do w/him being older. Watch Bastianini's "live" performances her on CZcams & U'll C it's very similar 2 how Dmitri is singing. He's definitely channeling the man. 4 that, great job Dmitri:)

    That's funny because I heard him live also many times. At the Met etc. And his voice was ALWAYS very small and hooty. Perhaps you are hearing him enhanced as many of the houses are doing now. And they admit they are doing it. I know many who heard him early on as well and said it was puny in small recital halls. I am sorry, but the audiences are being duped, and your comments are proof of that.

  • @Labienus
    @Labienus Před 11 lety

    You and your obsessive fantasy about miking. I've heard him live enough times-his voice is not "puny and hooty" He is an elegant, stylish singer, with great breath control-but the truth is, it is not a large voice-but outside of the Met I'd imagine amplitude would be less of an issue. If we are comparing it to the great Verdi baritones of the past he comes up short. The voice really can't soar, and the top doesn't have a real ping. Given the inelegant bellowers around to day-his fame makes sense

  • @SilverSingingMethod
    @SilverSingingMethod Před 11 lety

    This is enhanced. He sounds NOTHING like this in person. The voice is puny and hooty. No squillante. Listen to the 2012 Met recording of Traviata with Dessay. That is what he sounds like, not this mic'd and enhanced crap.
