The Huguenots were French Protestants persecuted by a staunchly Catholic government. Thousands fled France in the 16th and 17th centuries seeking refuge across Europe, Africa, and North America including areas of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Carolina. Join Senior Genealogist Rhonda R. McClure to learn more about these religious refugees, where they came from and where they settled in America, and how to research them using several published resources.

One Huguenot group is missing from this presentation and this is the group that converted back to Catholocism. Some of these people remained in France; but others actually left for New France; the present day province of Quebec in Canada. In fact, my family name (Forand or Foran or Forant) embodies one such person. André Forant left was born into a protestant family in the area of La Rochelle, France one of the vibrant protestant communities of France in 1643. He came from a family with a long protestant lineage. He migrated to New France in 1666 as a carpenter under contract (un engagé). At that time, in order to work and stay in New France, all protestants had to convert to Catholocism; which he did in 1669. He never returned to France, but married Marie Catherine Boyer near Montreal in 1684. He was 40 and she was 17. At that time, he was well established as a master carpenter and was quite well off. They had 15 children. Essentially everyone with the name Forand and derivatives of this name in North America are his descendants. The fact that he is of Huguenot ancestry is not well-known and he is not unique. A significant number of engagé who arrived in New France before 1685 actually came from the area around La Rochelle and converted back to Catholocism. In fact it is very probable that the great Samuel Champlain was also a protestant as the group that financed the settling of New France (1604 in Port Royale and 1608 in Quebec City) was led by the protestant, Pierre Dugua de Mons, who was also born near La Rochelle. In fact, Samuel Champlain was employed by the group. One reason this group recieved the rights to do business in North America was because Piere Dugua de Mons had fought with King Henri IV (born Protestant and later converted to Catholocism) such that Henri could take the French throne. It is highly likely that they knew each other.

Florida had another very brief Huguenot settlement in Jacksonville, named Fort Caroline. Unfortunately they were decimated by the Spanish at St Augustine.

The good news about doing research in France is that the records were not just kept at the Catholic Church like in most catholic countries. All the marriages, births, deaths, etc had to be reported to the mayor’s office of the town the families lived closest to. Do if you know the town this will be very helpful, though it’s all in French. My mom was born in France and my grandmother was French, though no one was Huguenot. I hope this helps.

In the expedition of the delamuse ships, my relative Abraham des moulins and wife, landed and lived in manakintown va! It is thought that the name was changed to mullins, per its pronunciation. His wife was noted as Rachel . That was thought to be around 1608! Per the persecution of the Huguenots. Then the trail ends, then in 1807 a Joel mullins born in 1767, in Virginia, moves to Lincoln county Tennessee. And with a son Richardson mullins. His wife in one instance noted as silvy reed, keturah drinkard, or Susanna terry! The son Richardson, thought to be married to a thursey smith? The time between the two, is not found per this time! In the 1840 census Joel found in Lincoln co tn at 78, living with his son. Only clues are other French family connections, clueveres, receipts kept thru generations. Hard to tie in. Any help would be appreciated. Have info of Joel’s descendency, up to today. Other mullins found, but don’t know if related or not! All in Virginia!

Stop spreading your sect bullshit cult of pan africanism trying to rewrite history on the achievement of europeans.
