  • Every January the Aylmer train show rolls around and this year was one I'm glad I didn't miss. There were many great vendors and displays available and I got some good deals.
    Although I showed up on the second day of the show everything was fully stocked as a snowstorm had held people back until the next day, this meant I also met several subscribers for the first time in person which was a nice experience
    I ended up buying several HO scale locomotives and a few buildings which should all go towards future projects.

    There’s always more life left in a LifeLike! My first train set was a LifeLike F7 that my wife bought for me as a present. That reactivated my love for the hobby that lasts to this day. The train is not much aesthetically but it can still make it down the track.

      I loved Tyco and Life Like when I was really big into the hobby as a kid and youth in the 1970s to early 1980s. Now I am 60 years old, disabled, retired and a Boomer so I will get back into the hobby with Life Like, Tyco and the more high end like Bachman. I am like a kid in a candy store right now. Computers, tropical fish, books, motorcycles and now again HO trains are my loves. Again disabled so I admire motorcycles from afar now but I love the train, computer, book and tropical fish shows that I have attended. You get to explore, share your hobby with others... many of them more advanced than you are but love talking about their loves. I have learned so much and am lost at shows for hours as they are like museums to take it all in. The prices are great and the shows are an experience. So if you get a clunker or two all is not lost because the eight other or more things you buy will be good ti great, 😀

      @@Smenkhaare it’s amazing what you can do with a bit of paint or replacing wheels and couplers on some of the old stuff. To me that’s more fun than buying rtr rolling stock. Why count the number of rivets when you could be enjoying watching the trains go round

    Train shows are always my favorite part of model railroading. Been a part of the hobby since I was 13 now 62. My very first train set was a Bachmann HO BN GP 40. In those days they guaranteed the engine for life. I have some Life- Like engines as well as old school AHM. Nothing wrong with them. Sure Athern is awesome but, for the price you can't go wrong. Great video. I really enjoy your channel Harrison. It's great to see younger people interested in the hobby.

Keep doing what you're doing, it's a very therapeutic hobby and for me personally, my future plans for my layout is what drives me to enjoy the hobby, every new engine or building just adds to your passion for this hobby.

    The two F40PHs you picked up, the Northtrain and Metra, are representations of Chicago Commuter Rail (like a before and after).
    The Northtrain unit I've never seen before, but the livery is the same one that was done on the F40C units that ran in Chicago. The F40Cs were inherited by Metra (in their creation in the 80s). Only 2 remain out of 15 total. The Metra F40PH is what is seen nowadays for commuter service in Chicago, in the blue Livery. They have gradually repainted their fleet over the years to a new Livery, but a fair number of metras fleet of F40PHs bear the blue Livery.

    A fun suggestion for the Athearn Soo Line locomotive: upgrade it with Athearn's Genesis motor (ATHG63842), which I believe is a 5-pole motor. That F45 has a lot of room for ballast and combined with a strong motor, you could have a budget DCC-ready unit that could out-haul a modern Athearn loco for about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost!

    I would like to see a train set that includes military haulers. Like back during the Kuwait War I saw actual tanks and vehicles being hauled on flat cars. The Abrams tanks would stick out on both sides of the car and they tended to sway back and forth, looking like they could flip over if special care in engineering wasn't taken.

    You can never have enough track, brass track is just as good as Nickel silver, if you are smart enough to clean your track! Or not have your layout in moisture, Same with steel. Moisture will also break down your scenery especially wood, glue and lychen.

    SMT - I think brass track will be okay as long as you have additional sets of wires connected to the track, at various points, that are connected to the controller. You could make your own version of Atlas Terminal Rail Joiners by soldering a wire on the bottom side of a rail joiner. Or just get several terminal track sections. The small O gauge layout of an oval with two spur tracks inside reminds me of a set made by Marx that was offered in one of the Christmas catalogs back in the early 1970s. I recall the set had a steam locomotive with a headlight, smoke unit, E-unit, and a slope-back tender. There were two revenue freight cars and a caboose. The set included the Marx station platform, water tower, telegraph poles, people figures, and signs.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm not too worried about distance since the budget layout will likely be a 4x6 or something similar. Can you use Oxgard directly on the track? Once I remove the surface oxidation I wanna try to slow down the process.

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 Před 5 měsíci

      @@SMTMainline - I had a similar sized layout myself with brass track. I found feeder wires were needed around a couple of switch tracks (also known as "points" or "turnouts".). SMT, you can use the voltmeter and ohmmeter functions of your digital multimeter to spot and fix any problem areas. Using Oxgard to fight oxidation is an intriguing idea SMT, but if you want to try it, I would suggest applying it sparingly to the top and inside edge of the railheads. It may be a good idea to keep it out of the rail joiners and joints to prevent bad connections from developing. The Oxgard may impair locomotive traction as well.

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 Před 5 měsíci

      SMT - Maybe any slipperiness from the Oxgard may be negligible? I have heard of modelers putting Wahl brand hair clipper oil on the railheads of their track, to fight oxidation, and no mention of any traction problems from using the oil.

    Harrison not sure if you're referring to the liveries or the locomotives but the locomotives are EMD F40ph locomotives and from 77 to present in a lot of places are/were the backbone of the commuter fleets in the US as well as the bulk of the Amtrak and Via intercity fleets for years. Despite their reputation the Lifelike F40ph's were big sellers because they were the only F40ph on the market. I have the one in Metra predecessor Regional Transportation Authority livery in storage myself. If you were referring to the livery on the " North" locomotive not surprised you're not familiar with it as it was an early predecessor to the Chicago RTA for one commuter road in Chicago. It's the NITD or Northern Illinois Transportation District and provided the rare and now nearly extinct F40c ( effectively a cowled SD40)that replaced F units on the two Milwaukee Road commuter lines ( Metra Milwaukee Road West and Metra MR North) in 73 or so. Ironically they looked a lot closer to the FP45 but with a stainless steel side grille ( represented by the silver side panels on the Lifelike).
    Additionally in a bit of ironic timing Caltrans apparently had been promoting the last run of their F40phs all over Facebook this past weekend not an excursion like Metra did with the E8s or E9s just you could go trackside to watch them enroute to the demolition facility. Yep no museum donations because they might still belch diesel if not destroyed...California 🙄

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Před 5 měsíci +2

      They're throwing away perfectly running diesels because they're a bit too smoky? Ugh, as if getting materials to build a new locomotives wasn't energy intensive. In Canada they rebuilt the F40PHs into F40PH-2s.
