A threat is an unprovoked aggression. If someone has a knife shoved halfway down your throat after murdering your entire family it is not a threat to tell them with a gargled voice that if they push the knife any further that you will use the broken glass in your hand.

Kim Jong-un has shown a high level of diplomacy and played both China and the US well. By taking advantage of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Kim showed his 'goodwill' to neighbouring countries, so that the country can continue receiving benefits from China as well as having a larger bargaining power on the negotiation table with the US. If the US lifts the sanctions, North Korea can be relieved from the faltering economy. And if the US continues the sanction, NK can portray the image that the US is not wanting peace in the region despite a warm approach by Kim.

I've read a bit about how Kim actually wants reform for the country but, is still stuck with his grandfather's and fathers oligarchy..he had to do things the way he did to bring the US to negotiations while appeasing the oligarchy..
Truly these hard working Koreans will do wonders if this is the case. Once reform takes place they will probably explode with prosperity with the help of soko and sanctions relief

Under Jong Un, Pyongyang slowly changes into a more modern looked city. Yet still, its economy is shrinking after the sanctions and Chinese support of that sanctions. 90%+ of their exports and imports are with China and those numbers are in decline since the sanctions, most importantly ones that are applied by China. Other than Pyongyang, other NK big cities like Wonsan, Sariwon, Hamhung are still in their 1950s-1980s facade. Some factories around Yalu river have closed and there are decreased numbers of cross border activity from December - April. Jong Un relies heavily on Royal Court Economy and People's Economy concept to maintain his power and the sanctions hitting hard on goods imported for WP elites and KPA generals and the core industrial lifelines of NK, hence the reachout.

Nevet mind that such 'manipulation' can and fid result in the death of hundred thousand on human being in Iraq prior to the 2003 US invasion (for example) and occupation as well as in a score of other nation that have defied the U.S.

The largest grain fields on the Korean peninsula are Pyongyang region in North Korea and Jeolla province in South Korea. However, the Korean peninsula maintained slavery system until the early 20th century and roughly half of the population was in slavery. As a matter of fact, most of the population was slavery in largest grain field Pyongyang region and Jeolla provonce. So they had quiet different thoughts from Korean traditions and they were rapidly converted to Christianity since late 19th century. Kim Il-sung's family also was a terrible Christian family.
Furthermore, Most of Jeolla tribe in South Korean are Christian or Catholic. What is more surprising is that these Pyongyang and Jeolla people are allied and anti-Korean and anti-American. Theae two peoples' enermy is not China nor Japan. Their enermy is only the other Koreans and its allied America.
