Comedians not punching down should be easy. It's boring comedy anyways. People making jokes about their own experiences is how it should be. Not making fun of people. But that's pretty typical Hollywood comedy. Unless it's a roast, I don't get it.

The bottom line is: Chris Rock's joke was in poor taste. We don't know if he knew Jada had alopecia, but even if he didn't know, mocking a person's appearance is not really funny. BUT, that still does not justify Will Smith's reaction. What he did was assault, and it's a CRIME. He's lucky Chris Rock decided not to press charges. I think the Academy should probably suspend Will Smith for a few years, because they just can't let this level of violence go without punishment.
I don't entirely agree with Ria when she says, "Only Will, Chris and Jada have something to process from that night." There's a larger issue to consider which is the reaction of the attendees to Will's Oscar win. Less than an hour before the win, Will physically assaults Chris in front of the world, the Academy failed to remove Will for his gross misconduct and then everyone is giving Will a standing ovation. Anyone who has been abused in their lives can understand how they could feel isolated when society doesn't hold abusers accountable in the moment. The thing to process here is how society continues to sweep abuse under the rug and pretends a crime didn't happen when it did. It's very disturbing how Will was celebrated with the standing ovation, partied like it was 1999 after the ceremony and he hasn't been held accountable to date. The Academy can still hold him accountable, but that night, they failed and it sends a terrible message to society that a powerful institution like the Academy didn't take immediate action against an abusive person like Will Smith.
