      They made more fairies of different ethnicities on top of everything, too. So kids could find someone to connect with. If Disney does take Tinkerbell and the fairies away, they'll lose ALOT more money. The left is poiosn at this point.

    The only way she could be worse for the Disney image was if she was a stay at home mom that loved her husband.

    Also, the lack of Peter Pan in the "Fairies" movies was apparently John Lasseter's decision. Back in the day, it sounded more like he wanted the Tinkerbell movies and Peter Pan to be their own IP without any baggage from each other. She was a little nervous at first but then she saw the necklace I had which my son had made. She asked if I was a tinkerer and I told her my son was. Then she relaxed and we had a nice visit with photos. It was very magical and I am sorry for those who won't have that lovely experience.

But she later redeems herself when she sacrifices herself to save Peter from getting killed by Captain Hook (to be fair, this occurs in literally every other adaptation of Peter Pan, including the 2003 Universal live-action remake).

      @finland4ever55 Good point, but Tinker Bell isn't evil - just anti-heroic. In the original Peter Pan book, it is explained that while Tink is a nice character in general, her main weakness is that she cannot control her feelings because of her small fairy size resulting her to only have one emotion at a time which tends to get exaggerated to extremes, meaning that she has the tendency to be overly-consumed by her own one emotion (and the fact that Tinker Bell has a very childish mentality doesn't help either) - for example, when she's jealous, jealousy is literally the ONLY thing she feels in her mind and therefore it consumes her.
      After getting banished from Neverland by Peter, Tink even realizes this fact and she even regrets letting her jealousy consume her to do such a horrible thing. After Captain Hook captured her, trapped her in a lantern and realizes Hook's evil plan to kill Peter and capture Wendy, her brothers and the Lost Boys, this is when Tink has a change of heart and decides to set things right by sacrificing herself to save Peter.
      All this I'm telling here occur in literally every other adaptation of Peter Pan in general, including the 1953 Disney animated version and the 2003 Universal live-action version.

That said, despite my criticisms for this character, I never want to see her go away, especially for how popular she has become, going as far as having her own merchandise lineup that rivals Mickey Mouse and friends, Winnie the Pooh and the Disney Princesses.
    It never ceases to amaze me how the Disney board thinks she's problematic (despite having what I consider a weak resolution in her original movie) yet have no problem with a dude dressed in drag as the Evil Queen (despite most family's stance on drag shows and drag queens).

      There was the book version of her, the original movie version, the newer movie version, and the sometimes-forgotten stage play version, which actually started humanizing her pretty early in the character's history, and left more of an impression than the book did on what people remember of her: the stage play is where the massively popular "clap if you believe" bit enters the story, for example, where Tinkerbell gives her life for Peter Pan and Peter, with the help of a little audience participation, brought her back to life: you can imagine that this bit took the darker edge off the original story by making death a temporary condition (if the audience "believes", of course!), and helped connect Tinkerbell more directly with the audience as the performers would do more to make the character likeable in spite of the weird fairy personality flaws: it was pretty easy for an unsympathetic portrayal of the character to result in the audience refusing to clap!

The "controversial incident" that preceded her removal was the editing of a scene in a promotional video for the Peter Pan's Flight ride, because some "sensitivity experts" said there were issues with representation. That said, removal of Tink's meet-and-greet and the editing of the scenes were not directly linked at all. Basically it was a nothing burrito, and there is no actual explanation for why her meet-and-greet was removed, and there was no incident involving Tinker Bell, specifically.

    The Fairy line was an attempt to 'graduate' girls from the Princess line as they got older and you can tell by the tone and merch it was made for a slightly older demo. (Chapter books were some of the most wanted merch from the line, moving away from simpler picture books)
    Also, fun fact; Tinker Bell's model from the original movie was the voice of Spinner from Clutch Cargo. And because of the Syncro-vox animation style, we actually see her LIPS in every episode.
    And I didn't like Black Tinkerbell even as someone who is Black... because they shot the actress so badly there was nothing cool looking about her. Every time they racebend characters, they make them so utterly bland because all they do is give them dry fros and never work with colors or anything to make the characters FUN. It's like they think the moment a Black character exist, it means fantasy can't be applied which is funny considering ONE OF THE DISNEY FAIRIES WAS BLACK AND SHE LOOKED CUTE!

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 Před 23 dny

      I was completely unaware of Iridessa until now - most of my Disney movie watching was over by the '80s and my memory isn't so good these days, but it seems to me like Iridessa was a character who could have been promoted better and even become a household name, with a little little more attention and effort. For example, she could have reappeared as a sidekick for one of the newer Disney princesses, or she could have appeared in other movies or media.
      For that matter, there's no reason that Disney couldn't have produced a movie focusing on Iridessa and other black fairies and other main characters, just for a change of pace, giving audiences a movie that is just a little bit of a different spin from the sort of thing that audiences were getting from the (very white and very British) Tolkien or Harry Potter movies: how often does anyone ever see a fantasy movie with a black cast, anyway? (The only one I can think of was 'The Wiz' from 1978!)
      Even if Disney has made a couple movies of the sort that I can't think of, fantasy movies with black characters are surely a neglected frontier that deserves better exploration than a token background character here and there, or a "wokewashed" formerly white character in a preachy, lazy, mediocre remake or reboot! There is plenty of room for some original stories with original (and recurring) characters to be told there, and absolutely no reason that the best of the movies made about those characters couldn't be as good as, or perhaps better than, any of the bewildering variety of fine (but generally very white) fantasy movies that have been made over the last century, and no reason that they couldn't have attracted the same audience as the most successful white fantasy movies. Iridessa could surely have helped lead the way, if Disney really cared about its original black characters!

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 Před 23 dny

      In all seriousness, I think the "problematic" thing comes down to the original characterization for Tinker Bell with "fairy" traits like a dangerously obsessive and jealous attachment to Peter Pan: in the original story, Tinkerbell was so jealous of Wendy, she even tried to "unalive" Wendy, so she could have Peter to herself, by manipulating the other boys into shooting Wendy!
      "Wendy was now almost overhead, and they could hear her plaintive cry. But more distinct came the shrill voice of Tinker Bell. The jealous fairy had now cast off all disguise of friendship, and was darting at her victim from every direction, pinching savagely each time she touched. 'Hullo, Tink,' cried the wondering boys. Tink's reply rang out: 'Peter wants you to shoot the Wendy.' It was not in their nature to question when Peter ordered.... 'Quick, Tootles, quick,' she screamed. 'Peter will be so pleased.' Tootles excitedly fitted the arrow to his bow. 'Out of the way, Tink,' he shouted; and then he fired, and Wendy fluttered to the ground with an arrow in her breast."
      - "Peter and Wendy", by JM Barrie, 1911
      Between the characterization and the usual body-positivity aspect, Tinker Bell apparently rubs some latest-wave feminists the wrong way, as they seem to think Tinker Bell is human, I guess.
      The Stories Matter sensitivity censorship consulting team seems to have reported in 2022: "Tinker Bell was marked for caution because she is 'body conscious' and jealous of Peter Pan’s attention... while Captain Hook could expose Disney to accusations of discrimination or prejudice against individuals with disabilities because he is a villain...."
      Scenes involving the Native American princess character Tiger Lily had already been censored from the original cartoon by that point for "depicting mistreatment of people and their cultures." If any existing character was ever primed for a revisionist makeover into a more three-dimensional and sensitive modern Etnnic Disney Princess, it seems like it would be Tiger Lily: I don't think I can remember anyone in my day feeling any hostility to the character, in spite of any "mistreatment" from the story (where the "Indians" were figments of the boys' imaginations brought to a life constrained by the boys' childish fantasy assumptions about Native Americans as two-dimensional villains for their games: seems like it could have provided a gentle learning opportunity about those sorts of assumptions, in the right hands.
      But personally, I find it weirdly charming that Stories Matter apparently concluded that there could be hiring managers out there who might have refused to hire a one-handed person because they were thinking of Captain Hook and assumed the applicant was a pirate with a fear of ticking clocks and alligators, or something.... (And again, Captain Hook and his crew were figments of the boys' imagination brought to life from their childlike assumptions about pirates as villains for their fantasy role-playing games, with the potential for some gentle modern revisionism as a learning opportunity for such assumptions!)

      So that's the reason why anime made an inspiration towards this scene from Peter Pan. (Over countless anime that is referencing that scene.)

    The male gaze is problematic to "THEM" because she was HOT, so she had to GO...sadly.

    Says something that everyone instantly believes a story like that. It sounded completely credible to me and I am always skeptical. Appreciate your experience and viewpoint.

    I got to meet Tinkerbell and Rosetta when I went to Disneyland in 2009. They were both sweet & lovely and it made me a fan of Rosetta too even though I wasn't familiar with the Disney Fairies other than Tink at that time. It was a happy, memorable experience from a different universe when sanity existed and Harambe breathed.

    Tokyo Disneysea is opening a brand new zone (not just 1 ride) that includes Peter Pan, Tangled and Frozen. Hopefully Tinker Bell shows up there too. Looking forward to visit the new zone

    Tinker Bell is essentially Disney's female mascot. Even if Disney became so deranged it threatens their business on their political side as well they would still never get rid of her. She's almost as synonymous with the brand as Mickey.
