    If you've decided to live in that type of climate, and you don't understand that there will sometimes be delays, in receiving your food and supplies from vintage aircraft, that have to operate in -40F degree temperatures,,then you shouldn't have moved there in the first place. These mechanics, pilots, loading crews,and managers,, are miracle workers.

    Man, oh man, after flying professionally in Alaska for 18 years, where winter-dramas like this were almost daily occurrences, it's a real pleasure to be retired and sitting down here in relatively-warmer Eastern Oregon -- even in mid-November! . . . counting my blessings with an attitude of gratitude.

      @Pandacat 666 New planes and training cost a lot and when you have to fly toilet paper to thoose towns profit margins are tight. Usually thoose airlines are getting paid by the government to fly there because no one wants to do it. Also you can't find newer small cargo planes that can land on thoose airstrips.

      @Pandacat 666 these aircraft are rugged and well suited for the task at hand. they are tail draggers which is better on these surfaces. a possible replacement is a basler BT67, which is a re-engined and remanufactured C47/DC3. the problem is they are uber expensive.

      why do they use them? they are affordable, they do the job well, and they are very rugged. the DC3/C47 is legendary, a modern replacement is the same air-frame converted to turbo prop. very expensive. look up basler.

    • @IARRCSim
      @IARRCSim Před 2 lety +3

      Yeah. The conflict between profit and good safety margins is a bit scary too. A lot of accidents are caused by cost cutting on repairs and maintenance. With lots of staff stressed to the point of quitting, Buffalo Airways seems to have more than enough pressure to cut corners on safety. Alaska Air flight 261 is a good example and Wonder has an episode about it. Nearly all Wonder episodes involve people dying except this one. Maybe Wonder anticipates a plane crash in Northern Canada involving an air transport service like the one in this episode. If Buffalo Airways has a crash in the next few years, Wonder will be more ready than ever now.

    I’m an automotive technician and shop owner in upstate ny. I think it’s bad when it’s 20 degrees Fahrenheit and snowing. I don’t so much as want to walk outside to get another car to pull into the shop, I don’t even want to go outside to get the mail and these boys like chuck are replacing an engine outside in colder weather then im ever dealing with. If someone wanted me to install an engine outside in the cold I would have to be making some incredible amount of money im talking hundreds of dollars per hour maybe more. I would want to leave the plane there until it was warmer outside I just couldn’t see putting anyone through that. What I would do is make a big tent for situations like this so the guys get out of the elements a bit kinda surprised they don’t have something like that it’s just insane to be doing work in cold like that. Obviously they would need to use a different heat source as you can’t have the guys breathing in the fumes from the heaters they use but that’s not a big deal

      @@6th_Army That's not particularly true, there are other aircraft capable of servicing these routes, I believe ATR-72s, Hercs and Q400s aren't uncommon up there. From what I've read I'm guessing Buffalo just has a good cost structure, little to no payments on aircraft, only expense to fly is O&M, hell they even save on ground crew by making pilots do that work. They likely undercut pretty heavily on contracts.

    It looks like I found another Brooks, pilot. It seems to run in our family tree. Uncles were pilots ,Dad was a pilot and so am I.
    I personally prefer a warmer climate. Captain Robert K. Morgan Brooks. LAKE LA-4-200. Beaufort , SC. Love to Fly. A1.

    Fantastic show . Wouldn’t Buffalo be better getting more modern planes to reduce the number of down hours due to engine break downs ? These veteran planes seem to be costing $$$ to run too , wonderful as they are to see still flying , parts soon won’t be available. Love and admiration from Australia

      Modern planes are going to cost millions each. Buffalo probably doesn't have the money. I do wonder why they don't use their Electras for this. Maybe the northern airports can't handle the big jets?

      It's Not really anymore Expensive to Run these Aircraft... You have to have Mechanics Regardless of the Age of the Aircraft,,, and although the Parts may be Harder to find... They are Likely relatively Cheap compared to Modern Aircraft,, PLUS Buffalo has Their own Bone Yard...
