I remember induction day at St. Martins School of Art. I felt alienated, I wasn't the fashionable arty type, I was a teenage heavy metal lover amid all these rather intimidating and confident people. John Galliano was the only person who said hello, asked me my name and made short, polite conversation for a moment. He put me at my ease. We were never friends, we were vastly different from each other, but this normal act of human kindness I have never forgotten and I never will. I know the sewer that can be dredged up in the midst of a terrible addiction, none are infallible nor safe from the demons that lurk inside beyond their reason. For me, I'll always remember him for this act of kindness, long ago.

He didn't have to bother, but he did. These small acts of kindness ring down through the years. Whatever his faults, and I'm sure they are many, (as are mine) he has his virtues, too.

He is a visionary. His creations are beautifully romantic. I hope he will continue to be well. Addiction is so unforgiving. Addiction is not easy. I cry for him. He is very brave to have done this interview. Alcoholics regret what they said, what they did and when drunk / high, behave polar opposite of what they believe. You feel a lot of guilt and shame which leads one to drink more to deal with your feelings. I think the hardest most difficult thing is to sit through your emotions, to feel painful unrelenting emotions for days and days, months and months. Addicts have underlying problems, no one choses to be an addict because the alcohol tastes disgusting. For addicts, substances take away the emotions. It dulls and mutes the emotions gives you a moment of peace and relaxation and that's what addicts chase. Addicts need second chances, some need third chances and many many die from their addictions. I am grateful for John Galliano. "I dare women to dream".
In my view someone who does something like this and GENUINELY apologizes and changes their ways completely can be forgiven. By now he's proven himself worthy of forgiveness. He's changes his whole life, gotten sober and begged for forgiveness. If we turned everyone out who does wrong, those people can just give up and become worse.
Became a fan of Mr. Galliano's when I started watching his fashion videos. Only after did I hear of the "scandal" incident. Never changed my feelings about him or his work. Still a great, talented designer. Admire him more now as an individual and wish him only greater and greater success; more importantly, happiness in life. No one is perfect and pure, we all do/say/feel some "wrong" things in life. They cannot be erased, only forgiven or not. Thankfully, Mr. Galliano's learned from his.

it sounds like you felt it was ok what he said, he clearly felt beyond reproach and he was humbled when his insides felt out, as they usually do /one way or the other.
I can understand what John Galiano is experiencing because I too was bullied as a child. I too came to this country as a child and many people of different ethnicities treated me with disdain and sometimes hate. I too am in the artistic industry as a photographer. I've worked with fashion designers and also Haute Couture designers. Fortunately for me, I don't drink alcohol or indulge in drugs. Those indulgements will never bring out the same hate as they did for John. If I ever say those hateful things I will not be able to defend my actions as easily as John Galiano and others who use addiction as a reason for what they do. I can say that working in the fashion world I have learned that those who preach inclusion, forgiveness, tolerance, and other kind sentiments don't always practice what they preach. There is a lot of picking of scabs, gossip, and treachery in this industry. In the end, John Galiano is only human like all of us and he is entitled to some sort of second chance. What he did, as brutal as it came out, did not shock anyone in the industry because frankly, we hear it every day. The industry ousted him not because of their moral values but because it was the right thing to do in the eyes of the outsiders.
I'd really like to see him create again. After his incident and Alex McQueen's death, the world of fashion feels so empty. Their collections used to bring fantasy to life and I'd love to see some of it again.
I feel so sorry for John. You can see that he is genuinely sorry for what happened. He is not an actor, so every emotion shown is so real. And I do believe he is working on himself. None of us would know the pressures he/other greats like him have/had to deal with. So it would not be wise to judge. Also, I've only had one experience when I blacked out after drinking too much and the next day I was so paranoid. Black out drinking is a real issue and you are not yourself in that stage. I have witnessed many friends who have acted completely recklessly when they're blackout drunk. So I do believe that he isn't a racist or antisemitic. Of course the things that he said are not silly at all and shouldn't be considered trivial. But if he has genuinely repented I feel he should be forgiven and given a second chance. I wish I could reach out and give him a huge hug. I wish him well.
when he was talking about Lee's suicide and he said "i understood",i literally burst into tears. i hope he reads these comments sometime and sees that so many people love him and respect him. and john, we all really do love you. and your work at margiela has proven to the world that you will never stop. and if you ever do, then that is the day that fashion will lose one of its brightest stars. a person who pushed the boundaries, created world of art and inspired so many people.
I grew up watching him design at Dior, which is what I first started following as a young teen. He inspired me to become a designer and now that I am on this path it kind of saddens me how much Dior has changed and become Raf's Dior and not the classic Dior. I guess fashion changes and he became a part of the reason why that change happened. I guess what i want to say is that creatively he is one of the best and he wants to change for the better, he now has his feet on the ground and I think he should be forgiven for the terrible things he said and that he should be given an opportunity. He is just so sad in this interview, looks like he was about to cry at any moment, I just think he deserves another chance to make a comeback in fashion, wherever that may be. I think Dior is out of reach now, but there are always other labels that could benefit from his magnificent creative control and direction. All the best John.

I guess this is made on purpose. For those understand and forgive what he did (like me), don’t really need any explanations from him. The interviewer was portraying those who don’t, and hopefully this could bring them a new perspective upon John and the incident.
Good for you John! I remember you at St Martins where I was on the foundation and fine art course. My friend Anna knew you, think her sister was a friend of yours. It's great that you realized your potential and your dreams, then later got into recovery. There are plenty of people who say stupid things even when sober but they don't give it a moment's thought or end up getting fired or being put under the fire in an interview like this one. John Galliano deserves to be forgiven for what he said, in my opinion. I believe he is truly repentant and didn't mean what he said. People in the throes of alcohol and/or drug addiction often say hurtful, derogatory, sometimes absolutely disgusting things they shouldn't say, most often don't mean, and usually don't even remember the next day. Kudos to Mr. Galliano for getting into rehab and cleaning up his act. He's an absolutely fabulous designer and I hope he's around for many more years to come.
I find him so attractive, myself. Part of that, though is his self-expression. He has an inner beauty that makes him all the more handsome, in my opinion!

I was working for Dior when it all happened. I defended him even though I had been told not to comment on the matter. I lost my job of five years earning 50K a year. What he did for the fashion industry was monumental, I found this interview terribly uncomfortable. Charlie says he wants an explanation, yet when John gives him one he calls them excuses. It's frustrating seeing people who fault in the public eye and who are turned on instantly. He was under a great amount of stress and sometimes it can break a man. Allow him to rebuild himself for christ sake. It would be incredibly different if he wasn't trying to make an amends, but he is. People need to be more understanding.
Seems like a very thought filled and contrite man…one who has taken from a very unfortunate situation and trying to move forward and make the best of it…it will be very interesting to see how this influences his creative efforts in the future. I wish him the best...

I love John's designs and feel sad for him. I know of a few individuals who became totally different people when they were troubled by alcoholism, drug addictions, stress and mental illnesses. No one is safe from such conditions, not even the rich and famous designers....just look back at Alexander McQueen who ended up killing himself. All I can say is ......he should have a second chance. Yes, those few words by him hurt people's feelings, but he did not murder anyone. I'm glad John is still alive and still creating.

Honestly, having watched this some years ago, I believe, my thoughts were along the same lines-but even a censorius tone, or a patrician, moralizing tone (which I believed was probably unconscious on the part of Mr. Rose) in the odd interview segment couldn't diminish my boundless respect for him, and for his incredible body of journalistic work, the very tone of his programme, always intellectual, adult, fair, at times rigorously honest or frank, never low-brow or pandering to the likes of Jane Doe or Joe Six-Pack. Recently it has come to the public's attention that he is a duplicitous, predatory figure whose behaviour off-camera rivalled that of Bill O'Reilly, Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., or Roger Ailes. So, revisiting this interview today, I have to admit that Galliano is the more redeemable figure here. He, in a drunken state, sat at a table in an intimate but public place, used hateful, harmful speech towards strangers, lashing-out. And there may have been a few other, vaguely similar episodes. But he didn't use his power to subjugate tens, maybe dozens of women, harrassing them physically and sexually in a work place, as did Rose. Today, it is Charlie who owes the great American public an explanation, not Galliano. How timely your comments have turned out to be, then, mates! X

Why is the interviewer constantly condemning him? John is not asking for compassion and sympathy, he's presenting a case for forgiveness. Are we mere human past forgiveness? Is only God capable of mercy? To not forgive is to carry a burden of hurt and grudge. Forgive and move on with your life already.
I blame it on over work and not enough self care. One can over work if one then learns to separate work from private life. A person has to be strong to be filled with so much responsibilities as he was, and remain such an extroverted person. He used wine/liquor instead of going on a trip or meditating and resting from his hard over worked career. I don't think that deep down he meant those things he said. Let's not forget how Hitler also hated homosexuals. So how can he love someone who was homophobic? It doesn't add up, so It was just due to over come, life's pressures and trying to put a band aid on it with alcohol. Since about 1996 I have idolized Galliano and his enormous gift of talent, his pure genius was astounding. I remember when the news came out in 2011 about his horrific rants and I was stunned. saddened and more than anything I was shocked. I've been in entertainment my entire life, I even portrayed John in a music video for Crazy Loop. Having said all that., I have witnessed myself, the wrong doings of someone under the influence of alcohol/drugs,etc . . and how they would say things that were so hateful and very unlike something that they would normally say when they weren't intoxicated. I believe John when he says he doesn't remember the rantings or even being there. I have forgiven him and I believe we should all forgive him. I hop that he will continue designing because there is no other designer quite like him.

I'm so glad that John has found himself again and is finally back at work. I always believed he was egged on in the Paris cafe. Basically set up. They were filming him because they knew he was a mess at the time. It doesn't excuse what he said however. I forgive him!
John G. is a brilliant artist and designer. It pains me to witness what he went through in his addiction. I’m glad he got the help he needed, so many refuse to. It happens to so many creative people, I don’t know what it is that causes addiction in some people but not everyone.
It is true that all we have terrible moments in our lives but everyone of us deserve a second chance. The world is a boring place to be, without real artists like he is. I respect him more now than when he was on the top.
A very high functioning addict- there are so many levels here. The fashion industry pushes these designers SO hARD a to produce all of these collections- it’s an unbelievable amount of work, esp at his level. what I notice most about this interview is no discussion of the context of his childhood / maybe family and society influences that led to the things that he had said- inquiry into where those statements came from. Why / how they came out of him. Addiction and hate speech are symptoms of great societal troubles that deserve more attention. How does Language like that get programmed into the recesses of someone’s brain? It seems these answers aren’t so untouchable that they wouldn’t come up in a conversation in recovery and apology.
John isn’t the one to be punished. It’s the industry and his bosses that put him under such pressure , for money and power , that he became so sick. They should be punished , and they should help him , do something for him and for the society in general to avoid such behavior. Being an insider , I can see how much the people working in this industry are put under pressure , from the smallest employee to the highest. There’s no support system to help them thru this extremely cruel pressure. Obviously John was had no such support or help. He was just asked to produce !

The whole ugly episode did save him. I think he's right about that. He would probably be dead now if this terrible thing didn't happen. It's a big price but how do you put a price on you life. If this is what he has to go through to come back to us, then I think he will be successful. He sounded sincere and has no reason to lie about who he is. Small people judge. Big people forgive.
I remember induction day at St. Martins School of Art. I felt alienated, I wasn't the fashionable arty type, I was a teenage heavy metal lover amid all these rather intimidating and confident people. John Galliano was the only person who said hello, asked me my name and made short, polite conversation for a moment. He put me at my ease. We were never friends, we were vastly different from each other, but this normal act of human kindness I have never forgotten and I never will. I know the sewer that can be dredged up in the midst of a terrible addiction, none are infallible nor safe from the demons that lurk inside beyond their reason. For me, I'll always remember him for this act of kindness, long ago.

He didn't have to bother, but he did. These small acts of kindness ring down through the years. Whatever his faults, and I'm sure they are many, (as are mine)

He is a visionary. His creations are beautifully romantic. I hope he will continue to be well. Addiction is so unforgiving. Addiction is not easy. I cry for him. He is very brave to have done this interview. Alcoholics regret what they said, what they did and when drunk / high, behave polar opposite of what they believe. You feel a lot of guilt and shame which leads one to drink more to deal with your feelings. I think the hardest most difficult thing is to sit through your emotions, to feel painful unrelenting emotions for days and days, months and months. Addicts have underlying problems, no one choses to be an addict because the alcohol tastes disgusting. For addicts, substances take away the emotions. It dulls and mutes the emotions gives you a moment of peace and relaxation and that's what addicts chase. Addicts need second chances, some need third chances and many many die from their addictions. I am grateful for John Galliano. "I dare women to dream".

In my view someone who does something like this and GENUINELY apologizes and changes their ways completely can be forgiven. By now he's proven himself worthy of forgiveness. He's changes his whole life, gotten sober and begged for forgiveness. If we turned everyone out who does wrong, those people can just give up and become worse.
Became a fan of Mr. Galliano's when I started watching his fashion videos. Only after did I hear of the "scandal" incident. Never changed my feelings about him or his work. Still a great, talented designer. Admire him more now as an individual and wish him only greater and greater success; more importantly, happiness in life.
No one is perfect and pure, we all do/say/feel some "wrong" things in life. They cannot be erased, only forgiven or not. Thankfully, Mr. Galliano's learned from his.

I can understand what John Galiano is experiencing because I too was bullied as a child. I too came to this country as a child and many people of different ethnicities treated me with disdain and sometimes hate. I too am in the artistic industry as a photographer. I've worked with fashion designers and also Haute Couture designers. Fortunately for me, I don't drink alcohol or indulge in drugs. Those indulgements will never bring out the same hate as they did for John. If I ever say those hateful things I will not be able to defend my actions as easily as John Galiano and others who use addiction as a reason for what they do. I can say that working in the fashion world I have learned that those who preach inclusion, forgiveness, tolerance, and other kind sentiments don't always practice what they preach. There is a lot of picking of scabs, gossip, and treachery in this industry. In the end, John Galiano is only human like all of us and he is entitled to some sort of second chance. What he did, as brutal as it came out, did not shock anyone in the industry because frankly, we hear it every day. The industry ousted him not because of their moral values but because it was the right thing to do in the eyes of the outsiders.
I'd really like to see him create again. After his incident and Alex McQueen's death, the world of fashion feels so empty. Their collections used to bring fantasy to life and I'd love to see some of it again.

I feel so sorry for John. You can see that he is genuinely sorry for what happened. He is not an actor, so every emotion shown is so real. And I do believe he is working on himself. None of us would know the pressures he/other greats like him have/had to deal with. So it would not be wise to judge. Also, I've only had one experience when I blacked out after drinking too much and the next day I was so paranoid. Black out drinking is a real issue and you are not yourself in that stage. I have witnessed many friends who have acted completely recklessly when they're blackout drunk. So I do believe that he isn't a racist or antisemitic. Of course the things that he said are not silly at all and shouldn't be considered trivial. But if he has genuinely repented I feel he should be forgiven and given a second chance. I wish I could reach out and give him a huge hug. I wish him well.
when he was talking about Lee's suicide and he said "i understood",i literally burst into tears. i hope he reads these comments sometime and sees that so many people love him and respect him. and john, we all really do love you. and your work at margiela has proven to the world that you will never stop. and if you ever do, then that is the day that fashion will lose one of its brightest stars. a person who pushed the boundaries, created world of art and inspired so many people.

I grew up watching him design at Dior, which is what I first started following as a young teen. He inspired me to become a designer and now that I am on this path it kind of saddens me how much Dior has changed and become Raf's Dior and not the classic Dior. I guess fashion changes and he became a part of the reason why that change happened. I guess what i want to say is that creatively he is one of the best and he wants to change for the better, he now has his feet on the ground and I think he should be forgiven for the terrible things he said and that he should be given an opportunity. He is just so sad in this interview, looks like he was about to cry at any moment, I just think he deserves another chance to make a comeback in fashion, wherever that may be. I think Dior is out of reach now, but there are always other labels that could benefit from his magnificent creative control and direction. All the best John.

Good for you John! I remember you at St Martins where I was on the foundation and fine art course. My friend Anna knew you, think her sister was a friend of yours. It's great that you realized your potential and your dreams, then later got into recovery. There are plenty of people who say stupid things even when sober but they don't give it a moment's thought or end up getting fired or being put under the fire in an interview like this one. People in the throes of alcohol and/or drug addiction often say hurtful, derogatory, sometimes absolutely disgusting things they shouldn't say, most often don't mean, and usually don't even remember the next day. Kudos to Mr. Galliano for getting into rehab and cleaning up his act. He's an absolutely fabulous designer and I hope he's around for many more years to come.

I found this interview terribly uncomfortable.
Charlie says he wants an explanation, yet when John gives him one he calls them excuses.
It's frustrating seeing people who fault in the public eye and who are turned on instantly. He was under a great amount of stress and sometimes it can break a man.
Allow him to rebuild himself for christ sake. It would be incredibly different if he wasn't trying to make an amends, but he is. People need to be more understanding.

I love John's designs and feel sad for him. I know of a few individuals who became totally different people when they were troubled by alcoholism, drug addictions, stress and mental illnesses. No one is safe from such conditions, not even the rich and famous designers....just look back at Alexander McQueen who ended up killing himself. All I can say is ......he should have a second chance. Yes, those few words by him hurt people's feelings, but he did not murder anyone. I'm glad John is still alive and still creating.

Honestly, having watched this some years ago, I believe, my thoughts were along the same lines-but even a censorius tone, or a patrician, moralizing tone (which I believed was probably unconscious on the part of Mr. Rose) in the odd interview segment couldn't diminish my boundless respect for him, and for his incredible body of journalistic work, the very tone of his programme, always intellectual, adult, fair, at times rigorously honest or frank, never low-brow or pandering to the likes of Jane Doe or Joe Six-Pack. Recently it has come to the public's attention that he is a duplicitous, predatory figure whose behaviour off-camera rivalled that of Bill O'Reilly, Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., or Roger Ailes. So, revisiting this interview today, I have to admit that Galliano is the more redeemable figure here. He, in a drunken state, sat at a table in an intimate but public place, used hateful, harmful speech towards strangers, lashing-out. And there may have been a few other, vaguely similar episodes. But he didn't use his power to subjugate tens, maybe dozens of women, harrassing them physically and sexually in a work place, as did Rose. Today, it is Charlie who owes the great American public an explanation, not Galliano. How timely your comments have turned out to be, then, mates! X

I blame it on over work and not enough self care. One can over work if one then learns to separate work from private life. A person has to be strong to be filled with so much responsibilities as he was, and remain such an extroverted person. He used wine/liquor instead of going on a trip or meditating and resting from his hard over worked career. I don't think that deep down he meant those things he said. Let's not forget how Hitler also hated homosexuals. So how can he love someone who was homophobic? It doesn't add up, so It was just due to over come, life's pressures and trying to put a band aid on it with alcohol. You'll usually end up doing something incredibly regrettable with that combination.

John is amazing , so good to see him back ,he is immensely talented, and is an inspiration himself,,,,He is sensitive and the only way he could express himself has been through his art , many people cant understand feelings , I wish he gets well soon and would love to see his collections once again ,
Since about 1996 I have idolized Galliano and his enormous gift of talent, his pure genius was astounding. I remember when the news came out in 2011 about his horrific rants and I was stunned. saddened and more than anything I was shocked. I've been in entertainment my entire life, I even portrayed John in a music video for Crazy Loop. Having said all that., I have witnessed myself, the wrong doings of someone under the influence of alcohol/drugs,etc . . and how they would say things that were so hateful and very unlike something that they would normally say when they weren't intoxicated. I believe John when he says he doesn't remember the rantings or even being there. I have forgiven him and I believe we should all forgive him. I hop that he will continue designing because there is no other designer quite like him.

I'm so glad that John has found himself again and is finally back at work. I always believed he was egged on in the Paris cafe. Basically set up. They were filming him because they knew he was a mess at the time. It doesn't excuse what he said however. I forgive him!
John G. is a brilliant artist and designer. It pains me to witness what he went through in his addiction. I’m glad he got the help he needed, so many refuse to. It happens to so many creative people, I don’t know what it is that causes addiction in some people but not everyone.
John made a mistake while he was intoxicated. His punishment was too severe. I hope he can one day be at the top of his industry.
It is true that all we have terrible moments in our lives but everyone of us deserve a second chance. The world is a boring place to be, without real artists like he is. I respect him more now than when he was on the top.

A very high functioning addict- there are so many levels here. The fashion industry pushes these designers SO hARD a to produce all of these collections- it’s an unbelievable amount of work, esp at his level. what I notice most about this interview is no discussion of the context of his childhood / maybe family and society influences that led to the things that he had said- inquiry into where those statements came from. Why / how they came out of him. Addiction and hate speech are symptoms of great societal troubles that deserve more attention. How does Language like that get programmed into the recesses of someone’s brain? It seems these answers aren’t so untouchable that they wouldn’t come up in a conversation in recovery and apology.

John isn’t the one to be punished. It’s the industry and his bosses that put him under such pressure , for money and power , that he became so sick. They should be punished , and they should help him , do something for him and for the society in general to avoid such behavior. Being an insider , I can see how much the people working in this industry are put under pressure , from the smallest employee to the highest. There’s no support system to help them thru this extremely cruel pressure. Obviously John was had no such support or help. He was just asked to produce !
Watching this 7 years later, still feel very uncomfortable watching this. This interviewer is ruthless and so far from anything to do with art. An artist is always an artist you silly.

I completely accept his mea culpa. He takes full responsibility for his actions and corrected himself. What more can be asked of him. The creative world is crazy pressure and the world has such a rapid turn around and insatiable demand.
Going through trauma and suddenly being propelled to the top without time to process wounds to the mind and soul will catch up to us-especially while burning the candle at both ends.

The whole ugly episode did save him. I think he's right about that. He would probably be dead now if this terrible thing didn't happen. It's a big price but how do you put a price on you life. If this is what he has to go through to come back to us, then I think he will be successful. He sounded sincere and has no reason to lie about who he is. Small people judge. Big people forgive.
