You're obviously in the market and have seen the two types commonly offered, smooth and hammered, but what exactly is the difference between these two Hammerite paints. Well it all comes down to the finish, and is as simple as it sounds, one provides a smooth finish and the other gives a hammered look.

Very helpful video, i wish more videos like this were as short and to the point. Its simple and very effective, keep it up dude.
Thanks for this video, this is exactly what I was trying to find out. Great video!
I'm currently using hammerite to restore a lawnmower , swing by I could use the advise
Really helpful video mate!
Great video. Straight to the point
Thank you. Looking for my scout bed!
Thank you, very helpful.
Thank you for the video. Short and clear. Hammered looks way cooler.
Really helpful video! Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
Kia Ora & Good Morning from Auckland, New Zealand ...great video bro, really didn't no that there was a difference between Smooth & Hammerite !!!
Brilliant, thank you, you've saved me a lot of time and trouble!
Glad it helped!
My approach is if the surface is rough and crappy I use hammered because it helps disguise it by sort of levelling it out. If the surface is smooth I prefer the smooth or satin finishes.
Thank this what I wanted to know
11/10 for perfect information. Just what I was after, you're the man
Thank you!
Very useful thanks!
You're welcome!
needed to see this...taking my hammered back...need smooth
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the upload
No problem
Thanks a lot for this!
Glad it was helpful!
THANK YOU
Thanks for posting this; was trying to figure out if I should get the hammered or the smooth one for some lampposts and gates. This vid really helped a bunch!
Glad I could help
Which one would you recommend on getting for gates ?
Good content
Top job
Is there a matte (not shiny) hammerite product family?
Nice video
My understanding was that the hammered paint had mica, broze, or aluminium powder added to it for added uv protection. Mica being the most common from what I understand. It makes the hammered finish paint a good choice for outdoor applications.
Also if you sand the surface, or are already painting over a rough surface then you wont get those bare spots, in my experience. We used to call them fisheyes at work.
Because I made myself curious saying the bit about mica I decided to double check the MSDS. Hammerite now uses aluminium powder instead of mica.
Rust-Oleum uses aluminium flake in some of theirs, but not in others. You'll have to check yourself for the colour you want.
The white Rust-Oleum spray cans have titanium dioxide in them instead which I believe will serve the same purpose.
I only bring up Rust-Oleum because that's what's more available in my area.
Anyways, that's enough of a paint rabbit hole for me today.
Cheers!
I have the smooth one in silver but it leaves streaks. What can I do?
I don't know if you'll respond but I'm looking to repaint some basic metal outdoor chairs (Tolix style) and I'm trying to work out if this will be good value for money or not. Nowhere seems to specify the length of coverage and I've watched multiple videos and people aren't stating what they used the paint for and how much it covered. I don't suppose you could suggest how many chairs this paint could cover? I did initially use a 250ml spray paint can from a local store but it barely covered half the chair so given the same ml I'm questioning if this will even cover half a chair or not and I have around 14 chairs to cover so if it doesn't cover more than one chair it would be costing over £140 which just isn't worth it when spray paint is around £2 and would cost a fraction of the price.
It will cover a good few chairs, obviously there are a lot of variables so i cant say for sure but it will go a lot further than the spray paint!
Hi so the direct to rust range works fine for straight to aluminium, no need for a primer? There is a seperate range direct to galvanized metal but that is alot more expensive where I live
It has been fine for me but I do know that Hammerite say to use the Galvanised paint. I have had no problems with the normal stuff, but who knows maybe it will fall off in the next few years
I have a question, i have this plastic bin that I’ve tried multiple primers on and it still flakes eventually? What can I use
Use an 80 grit sandpaper to provide a key for the paint to hold on to.
If the plastic is very flexible then the paint will Crack and peel no matter what you do unfortunately.
I believe pin holes got in because you didnt clean it first, sticky fats silicone from plastic wrap
Great video, just what I wanted to know
Glad I could help
which is good at preventing rust and lasts the most?
They are both very similar, you wont see much of a difference. If i had to say one then probably the smooth as it doesn't have the little pits that the hammered does where the paint is thinner.
Ur amazing!
Good video. But you should really be using some sort of primer with the hammered paint. It's not supposed to have the pinholes showing through like in the video
Great point!
can i paint small scratches on aliuminum with Hammerite smooth ??
You sure can!
So with these paint, u dont need to remove rust? U can paint directly on it?
Yea, you should still remove most of the rust as best you can. Then paint away my friend
@@TheBlokeCave ok thx
Would you use hammered on a large metal gate bud
It’s up to personal preference. If you want a wrought iron fence look yes, if you want smooth use smooth.
Agreed, its just up to the look your after. It would arguably be easier to get a good finish with the hammered too.
Could I use this to touch up my window wiper arms on my car they are a bit worse for wear ?
im sure you could! If its metal... crack on...Hammerite is good even if its a bit rusty
@@TheBlokeCave I went ahead and done it .They are looking better .
Just wondering if i could use this in my truck bed?
Yes you could
Thanks, i'll give it a go👍
But which is stronger?
From my test they are both the same, I will do a longer term test to see how they last but the results will obviously take a while!
@@TheBlokeCave i used the smooth white on the metak frame of our garage door 2 coats in 2006. Not chipped or rusted since then.
I want to know what's the difference between smooth vs hammered vs satin?
Satin is semi gloss
Great for underbody car stop rust make car last longer
Hammered is also stronger .
Good point!
Very expensive to buy but last seven years great for underbody car stop rusty four hundred euro if had get welding in a car Ireland
Unhammered Hammerite just isn't right.
