Did you know that Montgomery Clift never signed a long-term contract with a studio and that the famously gay actor may have had a romance with A Place in the Sun costar Elizabeth Taylor? Montgomery Clift was an actor that came into prominence during the end of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Montgomery was a huge star, but his career could’ve been even more impressive if it wasn’t for a nearly fatal car accident that he suffered during the height of it.

Montgomery Clift was born in 1920 and raised by an adopted mother with a family fortune. This meant that the future star had a fairly upscale upbringing. During the Great Depression, his adoptive mother lost the majority of her fortune. Still, the family didn’t want much. Montgomery had two siblings, and they both went to college. However, Montgomery had other plans. The burgeoning star made his debut on Broadway at the age of 15. Within a period of ten years, the actor began appearing in films.
While most stars signed long-term contracts with studios around the time that Montgomery came into the entertainment industry, the actor had other ideas. Montgomery never signed a long-term contract, with the actor instead using his success on Broadway to garner roles of his choosing. The performer was selective about roles, only appearing in films he deemed worthy.
Montgomery’s unique career choices paid off, with one of the actor’s first gigantic successes being 1951’s A Place in the Sun. The film saw Montgomery grace the screen alongside Elizabeth Taylor, and the two were dubbed the most attractive couple to have ever graced the screen. Sadly, a car accident that Montgomery suffered during his and Elizabeth’s second film together would alter the actor’s looks forever. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Montgomery Clift needed plastic surgery during his painful recovery.

That scene with both Monte and Garland really tugs at the heart strings. Especially Monte for me. My younger brother died at a young age. He was good looking like Monte and, like the character, had a learning disability. 😥

The two were scheduled to reunite for John Huston's film REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE but the studio declared Monty "uninsurable", Clift suffered his heart attack, and the part went to Marlon Brando instead.

It wasn't Clark gable it was Clift Montgomery, Marilyn Monroe had said those words to that Clift was more sick than her!

  • @swineinny1

You got the Marilyn quote wrong - she said the only one more messed up than her in Hollywood was Montgomery Clift - not Clark Gable! Unfortunately, he looked really awful before he died, whether it was due to lousy plastic surgery, or overdoing booze & drugs, he was a mess.

Stanley Kramer stated that when he made JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG he used Montogomery Clift's injuries and pill use for the film's sake. Monty was numb on painkillers during his scene as the mentally challenged and sterilized "Mr. Peterson". Clift came off a more convincing figure shot just that way. The Clash paid tribute to Monty in their 1979 song, "The Right Profile": "And everybody says 'what's he like?'/ And everybody says 'isn't that funny?/It's Montogomery Clift, honey."

I thought Clark Gable also died of heart attack, not substance abuse. His wife blamed Marilyn Monroe for the increased stress on Gable as Monroe was always late and needed many retakes.

There are some sites that say Montgomery Clift didn't have plastic surgery because all the damage done to his face was just under the skin & then another site says he did have extensive plastic surgery. Which one is right? I wouldn't think that plastic surgery was that developed during that time. Montgomery Clift was gorgeous before & after the crash. He most definitely should have won all 4 Oscar's that he was nominated for. I think Hollywood wouldn't let him win because he wouldn't play the "Hollywood Machine". Clift, Brando & Dean were the trifecta of the most gorgeous leading men & all 3 were the greatest actors in⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hollywood & would go on to change acting🎬🎬🎬 forever‼️RIP MONTY, MARLON & JAMES🫅🙏💔🤴🙏💔🫅💔🙏

Arthur Miller the sadistic S.O.B. wrote "The Misfits" paralleling each performers flaws, insecurities and personal demons. I hate that movie and Arthur Miller should have been jailed for cruel and unusual punishment.
