I travel solo twice a year and get the strangest looks when I tell people! It is so relaxing just carrying myself and no one else's expectations! I always stay in hotels/inns, never Air B&B's for extra safety and amenities--it's worth the extra money. I spend hours in museums, go to plays every night and take tours that probably no one else but me would enjoy. It is just heavenly! I text with family, so they're included and know I'm safe. I think when I go on vacation with other people, there's this need to keep everyone entertained that leads to overscheduling activities. I never feel like I need a vacation after my solo vacations!

I am taking my biggest solo trip to France this fall for 7 weeks! As a never been married woman in my 60s i have given up trying to find friends with similar interests, or waiting for a mythical partner to come along. I know what I like and am looking forward to the challenge of travelling with public transportation a d navigating the language. I’m also finding apartments for $50 a night! Cant do that in the US. 😊

I’m going to get my friends to watch this video. I’m currently on a solo trip 3 hours drive from my home. I’m British and staying in a shepherds hut, (look on Airbnb) it’s a tiny cabin on wheels, on farmland. All I can currently hear are the bird singing and the occasional tractor going by. It’s completely magical. I got here on Sunday, I took a deep breath and just relaxed. I’ve napped on a blanket in the sunshine, been on a scenic walk, eaten alone in pubs. It has been glorious and rejuvenating. I have felt completely safe, the owners home is right next door.
I would absolutely recommend everyone take time to travel alone, it’s just good for your soul.

I love traveling solo because I’m an introvert and a bit of a people pleaser. I get to control how much people interaction I have and I can easily change my mind without worrying about how it impacts other people. My first solo trip was to WDW about 10 years ago and it opened my eyes to the possibilities! I’ve been on many solo trips since then and I feel much more recharged when I get home.

I took my first solo trip in Dec.’23. I flew to Buenos Aires and boarded Viking Jupiter. We went on the around the horn voyage to Santiago, Chile. This was a trip my husband wasn’t interested in. I met many lovely people and never felt lonely. The wildlife and scenery were amazing. I am 78 years old.

Married for 42 years I am finding myself now having no purpose... I became a Certified Disney Planner in Feb and am having a hard time getting my name out there.. Yep, I've started dabbling in solo travel myself and I love it! I ended up doing a complely solo trip to Disney when a friend (We were staying on her DVC membership.) couldn't come at the last minute. They still wanted me to use the points and take the trip so I did. I was by myself in a 2 bedroom at Bay Lake then moved over to Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was pefect because I felt totally safe and know WDW like the back of my hand. I was unstoppable! 😀 Now i have Disney friends in Florida and have enjoyed going down by myself and meeting up with people.
I'm looking forward to many more adventures! Thanks for the inspiration Jen!

I went on a trip to Disney World by myself when I was in my 20’s. I am now 62. I can’t remember which hotel I stayed in. But I remember sitting on a bench in Fantasyland, people watching, and eating cotton candy. I had a good time. Only one awkward moment (for me) was when I was walking toward Adventureland and a man walking in the opposite direction assumed I was a Mom and said, “Can’t find them, eh?!”

    Hi Jen,
My first solo trip was to WDW. I treated myself to 4 nights at the Grand Floridian. I’ve taken my kids and husband many times to Disney but could never afford a deluxe resort. It was an experience I’ll never forget, absolutely beautiful. Then I felt empowered and went on my first trip to Europe solo. Paris and Rome, unbelievably perfect! I regret waiting so long to do so, always waiting and begging husband/ family to travel with me. I totally believe that everyone should at least once in their lives travel solo.

This needs to be shouted from the highest rooftop!! As a 44 year old stay-at-home mom who has done two solo trips to Walt Disney World, it is hard to describe how much I enjoy it. I will always put others’ needs and wants over my own in every situation…but being completely solo takes that option away and forces me to prioritize myself and my wants. (It took some adjustment - “meeting” myself again).
I think an added bonus is just the planning for the trip! Getting to think about and plan those solo trips is a huge mental lift, even months before they happen - the anticipation alone helps get through the harder days.
I found my guilty pleasures while traveling alone included getting a meal to take to my room and eat on the bed watching tv, sleeping with the tv on and going to the bathroom in the hotel with the door open (why does that feel so luxurious?? 😂)
Thanks for what you do, Jen.

Jen, you are my new hero! I travelled alone during my, first (yes, disastrous) marriage, just to make some space for my own needs. Many years later, I yearn for that freedom again, but experience such judgement about it. I am a geek, with very particular interests (Bronze Age Greece and Scandinavia, Viking Era, Botticelli, and well, much more) and no one can can exhaust my enthusiasm in a museum. Sadly, I make my way, but dragged along by others who just ‘want to get on with it’. THANK YOU for validating this choice for women.

Was this maybe my favorite video of all time? I had such a similar experience with my first solo travel for my 40th birthday. My husband wrote a nice note about us traveling together in the future but what I really needed right then was to go away alone. He had booked me one night in a nice hotel around a half an hour away from my house and had set up a massage there, and arranged where I could order food from and I had about 30 hours all by myself. It was amazing! I could hear myself think! I read a book! At the time my kids were 10 1/2, 5 1/2 year-old twins, and 2-year-old twins. I haven’t done it completely alone since (and that was over 10 years ago) but I am actively thinking about taking a solo trip or two in the coming year. The idea of Disney all by myself sounds amazing!

Thanks, Jen, now I have "My Own Best Friend" from Chicago playing on loop in my brain! I'm halfway there, I'm quite happy to travel on my own but to meet up with friends at least some of the time at the destination. I'm lucky, living in London, I hopped on a train and spent a couple of nights in Amsterdam - having an evening to myself I was very indecisive, and ended up riding the trams through the city and then burning my mouth on super-hot hot chocolate! Having no real plan in an unfamiliar place doesn't work out great for me, I get decision paralysis and end up doing nothing, then regret the missed opportunities. But I can always go back to Amsterdam, maybe even when it's not raining cats and dogs the whole time!

I do car trips to national parks, and have found a couple of women’s travel groups that I adore. I’ve been all over the US and Europe. Africa this winter! The closest to solo travel I came was a trip to Hanoi. A friend who had a work assignment there for a month invited me to join her. I flew by myself to join her. Technically not solo travel, but I did enjoy myself very much and had many cups of assorted Vietnamese coffees.

Solo travel (especially at Disney!) is so freeing! My biggest fear when I started was dining alone. I started easy with casual quick service and worked my way up to full sit-down meals. I always have my Kindle with me for an easy distraction, or sometimes I just like to sit and people watch! Once I learned that literally no one cared that I was there alone, I felt less self conscious about it

I live in Kennebunk, Maine. In the summer, it is our high season. I will go to nice restaurants by myself, and when they ask if I want to eat at the bar, I say no. When they try to head me towards a corner or side table, I ask them if this table, in the middle of the room open. They are surprised. People will look and admire me for being able to enjoy the night, the meal; and, yes, dessert with me.

My husband and I love WDW but he doesn't like leaving the room much before noon. If you're traveling with someone who has different schedules than you this is a good time to practice being solo in parks, restaurants, etc. I go to the parks by myself all the time when we're there. I just spent a glorious day in EPCOT in the pouring rain! I did a leisurely photo walk, hopped on one ride, ate macarons, people watched, it was wonderful. He was very happy to be cozy and dry in the room. A great way to "practice" being alone as you say. (I DO love being alone).

LOVE THIS! While I'm not a solo traveler per se but I love that idea!
I recently did some partial solo travel and I could see why this is so appealing to many. I just came back from London, and it was partial solo travel because my husband had a work trip and I tagged along. For a few days, while he was at work, I explored all over London by myself and it was some lovely me time! It would have been just as lovely too if my husband was able to hang out with me everyday, but it was just different and I enjoyed it. London is a huge city but I never really felt unsafe, in fact, I felt like going to places solo gives me practice making me a smarter traveler? Does that make sense? Instead of hailing a cab or calling an Uber to get around all the time, I did a lot of research on transportation and I took the tube a lot. Tips for all - I made sure to screenshot the journey (lines I need to take, which station to transfer) so in case I forget, and I have no reception underground, I still know where to go. I never got lost in the tube stations, I trusted my decisions and went with it, and it felt good! Even going to the airport by myself, I took the tube and did a transfer with a big suitcase, all successful and I felt it also helps with building confidence doing solo travel. I won't lie, if one day I want to do an international solo trip, London will be very high on my list!
Life is short so if there's no one else available to do it with you or you simply want to be alone, treat yourself and DO IT! 😄

I think in my case. In my early twenties I had to move to another city alone for a job and had an apartment on my own. It was this way for like 2 years. During that time, I HAD to learn how to make it on my own. Stressful at the time, yes. Makes me stronger today, also yes. Then marriage, kids, and NO alone time. Not really the sorority/book club type. I do know friends who cannot do anything alone, and I respect that. But, I've become a loner; I"ve had people mad at me for "not talking much". I'm just sitting there content. But for women travelers, I would say be cautious. AT Disney, you CAN feel safe. In Mexico, NO.

I've been traveling alone since I bought my 1st car at 20. Traveled for business and extended trips to tour a new city. Took a 2 month cross country and back road trip. Just booked a 3 week tour of europe. There will be plenty of solo time to explore and, this time, I won't have to deal with a travel partner's needs. Just having my own room every night lets me recharge. If you are an introvert like me, it's necessary in order to not feel frazzled.

My first and only solo trip has been to WDW. I went to celebrate my birthday since my husband was out of town for military stuff. Thankful my best friend of 20+ years lives in Orlando, and I was able to meet up with her for a day. But it was so freeing. Even when I made mistakes navigating or happened to get a little lost, I felt completely safe. My husband was a little upset, because we have shared so many memories at Disney together. We love to travel together and I’m not sure if I could do international by myself, but he gets tired and overstimulated in a different way than I do. I get overstimulated, but I prefer to be up early and going.

Can I just say how much I loved this video? You summed it up beautifully. I get pushback on traveling alone a lot but I also get people telling me how envious they are that I’m brave enough to do it. I started traveling alone to prove to myself that I am absolutely capable of standing on my own two feet and that I can not only make a living alone but provide myself the opportunities to explore what I find interesting. I watched the majority of the women in my life be unable to stand on their own for various reasons, and while I don’t fault them for their circumstances in any way , I needed to prove to myself that I could do what I needed/wanted to by myself and be happy doing it. I tried explaining that to others and most just didn’t understand, but I’ll never forget my mom saying “I am proud of you for doing this for you.” I hope more and more people continue to travel alone so that eventually no one will bat an eye when some says they’re going to do it.

Met up with some friends and their grown kids for a ride or two, but wasn’t rly on their schedule, so I took off on my own. My daughter had gone off with her bf for the day and she felt SO bad about it. I did feel weirdly alone at first, but I had the world’s best day. I 100% agree with you. People ask me all the time why I want to travel solo and my answer is because I get to do what I want to do. The sense of freedom and the ability to make my own decision for myself is the best thing ever after years of taking care of a husband and kids and then finding myself divorced in my 40s I re-entered my life into thinking more about myself and what I like and what I want. Now in my 50s, some of my best trips have been the solo trips.

I really enjoy watching your vlogs! Because of your encouragement, I took my first solo trip in January to Disney World (I’m also a DVC member). I thought I was doomed from the beginning! I was standing near the gate at my home airport and couldn’t get my bottle of Dasani open. I literally had to ask a couple passing security guards if they could open it for me (I felt better when they struggled too 😂). Then I had a layover in Atlanta which I have done many times with my husband so I knew I’d feel comfortable finding my way to the next gate. What I didn’t count on was the escalator not working. I didn’t see an elevator so I thought I could pull my carry on and underseat bag down the steps no problem. Boy was I wrong. The escalator was so steep so I felt like I needed to hold the railing with one hand but 1/4 of the way down I realized I wasn’t strong enough to carry both bags with my other hand. I was so thankful when the young man behind me offered to carry my bags down for me! Once in Orlando I took Mears to the Boardwalk where I was staying. I had a lovely evening walking around Epcot. I have never stayed in a hotel room by myself and wouldn’t you know it, someone tried to get into my room just as I was getting ready for bed! Fortunately I think they realized they had the wrong room and moved on. I piled a bunch of stuff next to the door after that.
I spent most of the next day by myself until a local friend joined me that evening to go to the Moonlight Magic event at Epcot. She then stayed with me the next three nights.
I don’t know that I enjoy traveling by myself but I now know that I can do it if I need or want to again. It definitely was a good confidence booster for me. I can so relate to your comment about trying to figure out who you are and what you like after raising your children. I am 55 and have spent the last 30 years revolving my life around my husband, my 3 children and now 4 grandchildren. While I may not do another DVC trip alone, I do encourage my husband to bring his golf clubs when just he and I come. I’ve found I really enjoy doing my own thing while he golfs. So far I’ve enjoyed horseback riding at Fort Wilderness and floating around the lazy river at Typhoon Lagoon.
Thanks again for doing what you do. I feel like we have had a lot of similar life experiences (thyroid issues, horrible experience with a church youth group leader as a teenager, DVC to name a few). I’m always surprised when you bring things up that I am also thinking about. 😃
