• Playing With Chords 0...
Also, I strongly recommend using note-name scratch paper so you can practice seeing these chords on the guitar neck at home.

I've got 180 lessons uploaded so far as well as over 50 creative writing challenges and an archive of over 90 live Q&A sessions. I'm always working on new content and working to make my Patreon community as welcoming, engaging, and fun as possible. Come check it out!
This lesson is designed to give you something fun to work on without having to learn technical terms like "the tonic triad, the subdominant triad" or the names of different voicings like "first inversion" or "second inversion." You don't even have to know what it means to be "in the key of E Major." I was hoping to give you some complex things to consider but in a creative package.
I think too many teachers have traditionally said something like:" "You want to have fun and be creative with music? You have to be miserable for a few years first. Then, if you're still so excited about music, you will have earned your opportunity to be creative." In my opinion, it's usually better to start by being encouraging and giving tools for creativity without too much explaining. Then, the student can find questions to ask, giving momentum and purpose to learning music theory. Music Theory doesn't dictate what ought to be. It merely describes what has been up to this point.
I hope you enjoyed this "Playing with Chords" episode. If you post a video of yourself jamming to the jam track, feel free to tag it with #playingwithchords01 and #scottpauljohnson

I've got a question are you from Seattle? Cause I think you've mentioned before.
@@wayneblackwell3089 Hi Wayne! For now, that's my secret sauce. Maybe someday I'll talk about it!
@@taato69 Mario - I am originally from Seattle, but I don't live there anymore.
@@ScottPaulJohnson too bad cause I'm looking for a teacher 101 classes and I thought of you. Thank you for the good work you're doing.
I love Marty
But you're deff. Great at explaining 👌
Props
I'm a 30 year old self-taught player and kinda stopped progressing. I'm not stupid or new to musical theory, but man your lessons unlock so much potential because you show it so simply and clearly! My band watches me grow and I'm in love with guitar again! THANK YOU.
You're right sometimes guitarist failed or quit due to many reasons especially when there's no progress but me too I enjoyed watching this friend playing guitar I always learn a lot from you
I've been playing guitar for over forty years and I'm self taught too I have to totally agree with you the Calm and Casual way he teaches is like a Beautiful breath of Fresh Air! He speaks clearly explaining things Perfectly! Excellent Excellent Excellent
Guys, absolutely agreed. Same situation here and I'm 42.
You absolutely read my mind! I'm 32 and was starting to lose that fire for playing. I feel so motivated and excited now!
I agree with you man, this guy is the best guy on CZcams at simplifying it and making it understandable to the self taught player. I started a month ago and can make sense out of these videos.
i hope this man knows that he has single handedly made me love music theory after not having played my guitar in about 3-4 years. scott and his videos are a treasure!
Didnt watched yet. But i’m so happy you are posting new videos 😄
Thanks Francisco! I hope you enjoy it! It's not soloing-related, but it will help you understand the neck - but mostly, I think you'll enjoy it because it's fun!
Probably the only YT channel about guitar that I watch and don’t feel like a complete idiot.
Hey that means a lot to me. Thanks
As a college student, I bought an acoustic to “serenade the sweethearts ” and the action on it bruised my fingers. Now at 65, I have a renewed interest and your tutorials are awesome!
You're the Bob Ross of guitar teaching. I love it
Awesome! Thanks! What a compliment! Would you like to see more lessons like this? Breaking down a chord progression with all the places to play it? Maybe some are soloing, some are chord progressions, sometimes with 7ths and 9ths?
@@ScottPaulJohnson Please! I play guitar and bass, but never really bothered with theory. You make it way easier to learn than any other music teacher I've been to or seen on CZcams.
I've come across your Pentatonic scale and CAGED videos a few weeks ago. Those videos blew my mind and broke a wall that stopped me from advancing in playing guitar solo. Now, I can somewhat play some solo using Pentatonic scales and still experimenting. I love how you include super helpful, real-time visuals on the guitar fretboard in your lessons. It really helped me understand the lesson much quicker compared to having my brain wrecked, trying to put up imaginary dots on my fretboard. Thank you so much for giving out these superb lessons. You are without a doubt, an excellent teacher! Once again, I thank you!
He is the best teacher on CZcams for me so far , I’m not flattering , he teaches very difficult things in a very understandable manner
Can’t imagine how much time you spent on editing, it’s just awesome and you’re the best
coming from editing and creative experience, I appreciate every detail you have put into this video. It shows a ton of work done!
Thank you for that lesson! It is so helpful to see it on the fret board while you demonstrate. I have watched lots of videos and end up replaying them 10 times to see what they are doing but you make it easy to follow and SEE with your graphics! As a beginner I did not know that the entire fret board repeats after fret 12. Wow. Your caged video is great too!
I love your videos. You make guitar music theory so approachable. I’ve been playing for a little over 6 months with the help of your videos & I feel really confident.
You rock, man! No other channel on youtube has such incredible onscreen fretboard visualization. Thanks so much for your efforts!
This is a scam! Ignore the telegram guy
I think I got rid of the comment, but please watch out for the "Telegram" scammers
Scott is probably the best YT teacher. when guitar was a mystery to me, his lessons were the most impactful.
Thank you Aziz
welcome back! thank you for your lessons, they really help!
Another great lesson 👍. Thank you so much for your time and help. Love you all Bill.
Simply the best out there! Thanks Scott!

Absolutely your the best ! You are amazing to teach the guitar! Could listen to you all day and then some !
Scott you're a brilliant buddy, bud. Appreciate what you're doing 🎸🌹
Scott thank you for all the schooling.. you have an uncanny ability to convey ideas. somehow I used to shy away from the CAGED ideas until I checked your lesson. you made it so simple. I am ever eternally grateful my friend. Stay safe big cheese !!
great teacher, great lesson and your visuals are so helpful.
Only recently clicked on to your channel, caged system vlog, subscribed immediately. Light Bulb moment is not big enough to describe how the information came across. in all my years (64) the best teacher, teaching method and content. Not enough words, many thanks
Your videos are always sick and informational. Plus you seem like a really chill guy.
351k subs from only twelve uploads.. That has to be some kind of record.. Especially for a guitar channel..
It's been three years since my channel exploded and I'm still bewildered, but extremely grateful
It's all in your note/tab overlays
Glad your back on the tube!!!
Merry Christmas to you Scott. 🌲🎅🎄🥂🍾☃️😊. Thank you for sharing your guitar experience with us. You are a God send to us. 🙏. I bow to you sir
These are the best guides on CZcams
Dude your awesome, keep up the great work, it’s really helping me
You're the best Scott. Keep them coming.
So glad you're back. That's going to be a great series
If you spend some time practicing, come back and let me know how it went. I haven't filmed the next one yet and I'm trying to gauge how deep to go with the next one.
I wish every guitar tutorial was like this, it makes it a lot easier to see what you're doing with this setup you have
I wish you were my neighbor. Man I would wash your vehicle, mow the grass just to show you how appreciative I am for all that you do. Thank you so much for your lessons and your time. This is a lesson that is perfect to learn if your playing alongside with someone.
I'm not sure how to reply on telegram :(. I will Google it and see if I can do it. Is it as difficult as playing guitar? Lol.... ;)
I hope you didn't get scammed! Someone was posing as me trying to get people to message them on Telegram!
@@ScottPaulJohnson nope I didn't. The same thing happened to me on another channel and someone caught on instantly and messaged me like you did and said it's a scam. :)
always happy to see your content !
Thank you Scott, you have good lessons and material.
HEYYY after a long time!
I absolutely love your vids
Wow Scott. I really enjoy watching you on your videos. I am almost in intermediate guitar player but I play chords only. Oh classic rock mostly Beatles. Your videos are so calm and informative I just wanted to say thank you again and I appreciate your effort
I'm new to the guitar, and I feel like I overwhelmed myself by diving in music theory, CAGED, pentatonics even I am still having a hard time with barre chords.
And I find Scott's lessons the easiest to digests as a beginner, I can't even believe these are free. Thank you very much!
Oh yeah, barre chords are hard to get down. I've found over time, that three string chords sound better and feel better.. (especially when playing with a bassist) maybe emphasize playing those shapes across the fret board (up to fret 12) smoothly and with a metronome or backing track. Try thinking of barre chords as lower on the totem poll of priorities.
Oh wow I really didnt think of it that way@@iAmMattN that's a really sound advice thanks!
I just realized I'm hurting myself trying to make barre chords sound good and also makes me frustrated
@@TheSulfer I remember when I was learning barre chords, it helped to just look at exactly what notes your first finger is playing. Because once you realize you don't really need to barre across all the strings and it's really only 1 or 2 that matter, it becomes so much easier. Also, I know some people have better luck wrapping the thumb around for those chords, but I decided to just learn both 😂 they both have their time and place. But like the other guy said, it's probably more beneficial to focus on your triads. More practical and really help with your theory. Once you connect your triads to the scale positions and arpeggios, your playing will explode!
Props to a great video! But your tech skills on the graphics supporting the video are equally impressive!👍
Very interesting the way you delivery the lesson...
Hi Scott from Rio,Brazil.
Tks a billions you are a great guy and a super great teatcher
Awesome content!!! I'm impressed. I think everybody should suport this guy for giving us such high quality materials to study! Congrats teacher Scott!

Been in public Ed for a long time and want to say your pacing and style are right on the money. Congrats and thanks
I feel like this guy is trying to prep me for the big talent contest and I'm his hopeless student, but through hard work and plenty of montages, he's gonna get me there. (You're an A-class teacher, dude.)
I like your lesson.
One of the best instructors on CZcams.
You make me pick guitar again. Much love from NEPAL 🇳🇵
Love your lessons! You make these make sense!

It keep things simple and not overloaded!

Thank you Jason! Feel free to come back once you've practiced a bit and tell me how its going!
Thank you Scott.
Thank you thank you thank you. I've been "Playing for 25 years". In the last two days three of your videos and one from Shred took me to a completely different plane. I have fairly good fingers but my theory has always been noise on the battle field. I feel like you just showed me the matrix.

I really like this one ❤thanks
Dude, you are awesome!
Great lesson, thank you!
You're welcome, Jens! If you spent some time practicing, please come back and let me know how it went. Was it fun? Did you get used to finding those other E and A chords up the neck? That kind of thing.
