    Several videos back I mentioned the ill-fated 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet, but I want to explore this story in a little more depth. If you’ve ever seen the series Black Sails you’ll probably remember the Urca de Lima, the treasure ship Flint and his crew were chasing in the first season. The Urca de Lima was a real ship and it did indeed wreck off the coast of Florida after sailing into a powerful hurricane. But the Urca wasn’t alone, it was part of a fleet comprised of 12 ships sailing from Havana to Spain.

      Great content as usual. I'm interested to know more about what a day in the life of a pirate captain and quatermaster would look like, compared to their crew. Would it differ much beyond the decision-making? Would they mostly go into battle themselves alongside crew or lead from the rear?

    A friend's father was one of the NASA guys who succeeded in bringing up the majority of this treasure just north of Vero Beach FL. I used to go surfing right where one of the ships wrecked, and several of the guys found pieces of eight on the beach after thunderstorms. It's a fascinating story!

    There is a great museum down at Sebastian Inlet that has a lot of the items recovered from the 1715 Fleet wreck. I enjoyed touring the museum and thinking what a huge financial disaster this wreck was for Spain at the time! There is still one ship missing that is part of the 1715 wrecks that hasn't been found yet. It believed that ship is in deeper water than the ones that have been found. I live in St Augustine so a couple of the museums here have the 1715 wreck storytelling on the tour. Enjoyed the video mate!

  • @husbandsonfollowerleader9133

    Grew up on the Treasure Coast of Florida, just south of Vero. My father use to tell us about these shipwrecks when we would visit the beach. My brothers and I would "look for" the treasure, of course never finding anything. Fun memories.

    Great story about the Spanish treasure fleet! I'm a big fan of the pirate series "Black Sails. " Despite its many ahistorical elements, it has a wonderful cast, spectacular sailing and battle scenes, a great plot including "backstories" for fictional Treasure Island characters like Captain Flint, Long John Silver, Israel Hands, and Billy Bones, and superb locations/production values. Plus a long list of historical pirate figures such as Edward Teach, Charles Vane, Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham, Benjamin Hornigold, and Governor of the Bahamas, Woodes Rogers.

      @@lightlysearedontherealityg1218 Yes. Was very interesting how democracy worked aboard ship, the captain was elected, and could just as easily be replaced by a majority vote of the crew. Also how it was in the pirate's interests NOT to battle crews of merchant ships, and vice versa, even extending to some collusion between merchants and the pirates.

    What popular culture tends to forget is attacking the Treasure Fleet as a whole was essentially suicide unless you were part of a fleet. The vast majority went after stragglers or damaged ships from the fleet

    I love your channel. It is very informative and you speak in a clear voice that is easy to listen to. I have learned a lot today and for that I thank you. At the end of your video you mention any suggestions. Maybe this is interesting. Years ago I read that an old Dutch Law, and still active today, stated that you could attack any ship carrying a pirate flag Without Warning! Just now I've spent 30 minutes looking for that again, but I can not find a reference to this anymore. But this let me to my suggestion. Are there many laws specifically tailored for/against Pirates?And are some of them, in any country of course, still valid today?

    (Bragging rights invoked.) On July 30, 2015, exactly 300 years to the day of the sinking of the 1715 fleet, a salvage crew found 352 gold coins from one of these ships. Including nine ’royals’ that ended up selling for between $300,000 and $500,000 apiece. The total value of the treasure was over $4 million. I was the diver who found the coins.😉

    I first heard about the Spanish Treasure Fleet in the Netflix documentary series The Lost Pirate Kingdom. In this video you mention Woodes Rogers' pardon, which was portrayed in said documentary as causing a lot of in-fighting and disruption among the Flying Gang of Nassau. -Any chance you could dive deeper into the internal politics of pirates facing pardon vs punishment?

    • @ThePiratesPort
      @ThePiratesPort  Před rokem +2

      I'd love to give you the answer to that question but to be honest that documentary is VERY loose with historical accuracy. For example, how would they have had information about the internal politics of the pirates? They weren't keeping journals or anything like that, so where did they get the documentation you know?

    • @MrIWannaLaugh
      @MrIWannaLaugh Před rokem +1

      @@ThePiratesPort Granted, while that doc was entertaining, I knew almost immediately it would be speculative, and I took it with many grains of salt. True, we can't open Hornigold's (nonexistent) diary and know the intimate gossip of his day; but the choice to accept a pardon or not, and the motivation behind doing so seems pivotal to the end of what we know as the Golden Age. Is there record of how many pirates were pardoned vs executed at that time? -Your care, accuracy, and exhaustive attention to these topics amaze me, and I congratulate you on a well-deserved 10k!!

      If he existed (there is no evidence that he did) he would have operated long after the golden age of piracy (focus of this channel) came to an end. During the golden age there wasn't much merchant shipping along the gulf coast so it wouldn't have made much sense for pirates to operate there.

    • @robertcole9391
      @robertcole9391 Před rokem

      @@ThePiratesPort Perhaps it was after the golden era. But it does make an interesting read. Gasparilla was a bit notorious up and down the Florida Gulf Coast between Ft. Myers and Tampa. Again, thanks for the info.
