    Yes my loco has suffered the same fate as you describe,Ron-the chassis has been attacked with some serious filing but the result,as you say,is that the magnet is binding to the armature.Thanks for the info re shims-thatll fettle it!

    Ron good afternoon. I have watched all of your programs I have learnt so much from you love your layout I am new to hornby dublo I have just started purchasing three rail steam locos I have four a4- four duchess’s class- two standard 2-6-4 and two n2+ I 8f one castle three rail class. my question is I have just purchased a three rail castle tender for my project and a castle two rail with a ringfield motor can I convert it to three rail many thanks Colin.

    Hi Ron - Many thanks for all your useful videos. I have two questions:
    1 - Am I right in thinking that Dublo engines should run forwards when the centre rail voltage is negative relative to the outer rails?
    2 - I have seen photos of both fine and coarse pitch thread armatures. Can either be fitted to, say, the 0-6-2 Tank engine without changing the gear wheel fitted to the rear wheel axle? Presumably the fine pitch gives slower running for the same motor rotational speed.
    Thanks again.

      Hi Graham, Yes to question 1.
      Early motors had a course pitch worm thread and these are not compatible with the later fine pitch worm wheels.

      @@Raedodd5 Thanks Ron - I have two Dublo 0-6-2 Tanks of similar vintage, one has the North pole of the motor magnet on the left side, the other on the right side, yet both run in the same direction for the same applied voltage - odd!

    Hi Ronald good evening, I have taken out the brushes out the ring field motor I for got what side the spring went can you help me recognise which springs go to the left and the right side of the motor many thanks Colin.

    • @Raedodd5
      @Raedodd5  Před 2 lety

      Hi Colin the springs are handed for RH & LH you may have to try them both sides to see which way they fit best. think they have about one quarter turn pressure on the brush and the end is bent to give good contact.

      Thank Ronald for your help, I am Learning a lot from your subscribed channel on the repair and the servicing side I will be ordering the pick up bits for the west county class to convert to three rail from mainly trains and I have the hornby dublo book by Mitchel foster for the parts list the kit as the longer bolt + the tag which fit at the top of the chassis under the nut so you can connect and soilder the red wire to it I have done the work on the isolating wheel with the isolating paint on the center part of the wheels if I have a problem with this project I will email you for your help and advice if That ok with you. Ps I love your layout .Many thanks Colin.

    Hello Ron,
    I got out my old HD HD 3-rail "N2" LMS 6917. Using the HRCA web site I've been able to date it to 1947-8. (Gold HD label, sans serif lettering, ...)
    I've given her a thorough service but the magnet is very weak. The big problem is that she'll only run about 3ft before she trips the automatic cut out on my H&M Duette, once the cut out has reset off she trundles again or another 2-3ft. She's also pretty slow! Could this be due to a weak magnet meaning she's drawing far more amperage than she should and so tripping the cut out on the controller?
    Until I stumbled on this video I figured it was a problem with the armature windings but now I'm wondering if simply attaching neo magnets as you did mightn't solve the problem? What do you think?

    hi there, nice video. i´m currently trying my best to restore a motor from a vintage 8F 2-8-0 Hornby LOCO that is now not running after a short circuit. Do you have any help or video to suggest.?thks

    • @Raedodd5
      @Raedodd5  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, it's unlikely you have damaged your motor with a short circuit, the power supply should have tripped. It may take a couple of minute for the supply to reset or you could try an alternative supply.

    Hi.I was wondering if you could help.I need to refit a horseshoe magnet to a 0-6-2 but the thing is so tight it wont allow the armature to turn!I had to force it off(needed to get to the armature).All id like to do now is refit the horseshoe magnet then fit two 6mm neomagnets as you have.But theres just no freeplay at all once the horseshoes back in place!
    Any ideas?Thank you for any advice given.

      Hi Tony, To remove or adjust the position of a HS magnet I use external circlip pliers which can spring open the magnet just enough to allow it to be easily moved (they are a close fit to the armature) as seen on my video. I have come across a motor where someone has filed the contact faces on the chassis to presumably aid fitting, but this resulted in the magnet rubbing on the motor. In this case I had to use a very slim shim so the motor was free. Good luck with your project. Ron

    Hi Ronald. Like some others here I am having a problem with one of my engines. It is a Ringfield castle which runs beautifully backwards, But runs like a snail forwards. The engine and chassis has been serviced with no change in it's running. Do yo have any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it.

    • @Raedodd5
      @Raedodd5  Před 3 lety

      That's unusual, if you have another model you can try swapping the motor to test or remove the motor and test it out of the chassis to see if same results. That way you can see if motor or chassis has problem, sometimes it can be the quartering of wheels so test chassis separately on the track. Good luck, Ron

      @@Raedodd5 Hi Ronald, problem was solved by taking a picture. When I took the picture I noticed that the bogie wheels looked a bit big. I had bought this chassis in for a project and had not fitted them myself. So when I moved the engine backwards the bogie as you would expect pulled towards the front of the engine and visa versa going forwards. It was then that I noticed that the wheels were touching the chassis base when going forwards. the previous owner had put a set of Gibson wheels on. They were just too big and were causing a sporadic short as the engine moved. I have replaced them with a smaller set of wheels and all is well now. Many thanks for the reply.
