Fox 36 GRIP2 vs. Rockshox Lyrik RC2 - 2019 Fork Comparison

  • Let's just get this out of the way first, you cannot go wrong with either of these forks. The suspension technology available these days is nothing short of amazing. These stock All Mountain/ Enduro forks are extremely capable. There is no bad choice between Fox and Rockshox! But there are some distinct differences, that can help you narrow down the fork that might fit your needs the best. We took the time to compile our findings with these two forks in a back to back test, shootout, dual, comparison, versus, whatever you want to call it to help establish where these suspension forks are similar and where they are different. Note that these are 2019 Fox and Rockshox models. Fox coming with the GRIP2 damper and the Rockshox Lyrik coming with the RC2 damper. Enjoy!

      Torque cap adds some "inches", if you can utilise it. It's a tough call though. I agree with what's said elsewhere, RS can be a little easier to home service, but if you're mega-loaded, just go two pairs of Foxes and when one's being serviced, the other one is being ridden😉

      Johannes Nilsen, the classic tech trap. You do your due diligence, test and analyse things, only to open up a Pandora's Box of deeper confusion. I don't know much, but in your situation, I'd personally go with a Fox 36 over RS. However, from everything you hear about F34's not being so stiff, then in the trail cat., I'd go Pike. Screw everything else, because in my ignorance, it may be so that if you're a home fork servicer, you don't want too many special service tools from too many brands, the costs start to rise. knowing Shimano, one day they'll upset the apple cart and produce an XTR fork and shock combo and we'll have to buy into their maintenance, as well. It can be headache if thought through too much, pick it out of a hat and go ride, bummer if you get a psyched that you've bought the wrong fork. I don't know.

      @@MrSmoothasf I think it honestly boils down to aesthetics and price mostly these days, as performance is so close you probably need to be a professional racer to even begin to notice a significant difference.
      Personally, if price wasn't a factor, I'd get the 38 Factory and pair it with a Transfer Factory dropper and DHX2 shock, because I'm a sucker for matching kit like that (especially if they've all got the Kashima coating).
      That said, the Zeb is both better looking (although it'd be nice if it came in Lyrik/Boxxer red) and is slightly cheaper than the 38, so its objectively the better choice.

  • @gpearce11
    @gpearce11 Před 3 lety +4

    If I was to make a money-no-object build, I'd pick the Fox 36 (or possibly 38) for honestly no other reason than it would match my DHX2 shock and Transfer dropper (also, I would absolutely splurge on the Factory versions of both the fork and dropper, purely for that sweet matching Kashima bling).
    Were I on more of a budget (which I very much am) I'd personally pick the Rockshox Yari RC, then upgrade the damper and spring to the Lyrik's Charger 2.1, which is technically a vote for the Lyrik. The Yari costs half as much as the Lyrik Ultimate (two thirds of a Lyrik Select), but can then be upgraded to the same internals as the Lyrik Ultimate for the same price as a new Lyrik Select (this is also what I'd do with a Revelation instead of getting a Pike).
    You can do something similar with the Fox 36 by buying a Marzocchi Z1 and getting the Grip2 later, but its noticeably less economical than the Yari RC + Charger 2.1 route (which slightly defeats the purpose, unless you're a die-hard Fox fan).

    Hi jeff, or is it Geoff, in the near future I'm doing a custom build on possibly the Yeti SB 130 , can you tell me if the SB 130 could take a 160 fork up front. The reason I ask is I would love the grip 2 fox 36 over the fit4 ,I know the 130 is just that on the rear & 150 upfront, but as you know fox don't do grip 2 at 150 only 160 upwards, it would change the ride characteristics a little I'm thinking but would it ruin the ride , obviously it would change the BB height.

Also, the stock 160mm fork comes with 1 spacer iirc. Fox told me to remove mine as they found it very common based on 1500 setups at interbike that with the new airspring etc that the top end of travel was ramping up too quickly and rarely/never used. I don't ride ultra hard like the pro here tho. I love my 36 for sure tho and wouldn't get rid of it but it'd be nice if guys were more upfront about the tuning goofiness with the extra clicks and changing documentation from Fox VS their techs on it. Ascending is a factor however having your fork move around a little bit during climbing actually results in no energy lost like it does for the rear suspension. Both are great, got lyric on my specialized turbo levo, and fox 36 on merida one sixty m#rida, strange as it seems, lyric just feels better... might be because it’s on an ebike, that´s heavier and more planted, or simply because specialized geometry and whole bike matches better together with lyric than merida does with fox. But again, both are great....

    What's weird is that bike brands put fox forks on their highest tier models, but put rockshox on their lower tier. Even though they are both equally great.

    • @disco.lemonade
      @disco.lemonade Před 5 lety +1

      that's not weird at all. first, RS has a wider range of forks. you can't find a $150 Fox fork. second, Fox has a great reputation of reliability that RS didn't have until a few years back, and with that Fox sits at top at price too. Their DH fork is often more sought for DH riders for that fame alone, and they're well known to throw in more dollars for a bike so it makes sense you put whatever is more expensive in the bike you make in top of the lines. RS nowadays has stepped up a lot in terms of reliability, and they're light and service isn't a pain in the ass like Fox are. These days you see lots and lots of bikes with SID, Pike, and Rebas, bikes that won't be less than $3k.
