- 12 May 2001 | Fa Cup Final
It was the first Cup final to be held outside of England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. These two team were only separated by one point in the final League table, Arsenal finishing second with seventy points and Liverpool finishing third with sixty-nine points.
Arsenal had a very successful run leading to the finals. Beating the likes of Blackburn and Chelsea. They had to come back from behind to beat their city rivals Tottenham to secure their place in the finals. Liverpool probably had it easier than Arsenal facing simpler teams like Rotherham Utd & Man City although they faced the ever impressive Leeds beating them 2-0 at Elland Road. They played Wycombe where a Heskey & Fowler strikers were just enough to send them off to their first final since their disappointing lost to Man Utd in 1996. - Sport
"He has won the Cup for Liverpool, all by his self"... will never forget those words.
It was a pity that he got injured later on in his career. I had money on him breaking Bobby Charlton's England scoring record.
Big Steph won liverpool the cup all by himself
RIP Houllier, the first FA cup i witnessed you win for us as a LFC manager
Yes, brought back some glory days, we owe him for that as fans
This should be the game that Owen is.remembered for
John Doe Owen and Fowler don’t get the respect they deserve.
@@FCMolde99 Fowler in his prime was probably the best finisher I've ever seen, any angle he made it look easy.
He won the balloon d,or that season
@@FCMolde99 Fowler is known as God to Liverpool fans so he certainly has their respect 100%.
@@FCMolde99 fowler gets massive respect, lfc fan base nicknamed him "God" that's the highest honor u could bestow upon a player... Owen on the other hand ruined his connection with the fans when he went to Manchester united. Most Liverpool fans me included didn't mind that he went to Newcastle but when he went to the scum he destroyed all good will he had with the fan base... He was selfish and only cared about his brand and probably got alot of wrong advice... Hes talked on many interviews that he regrets what he did bcuz he doesn't get as many opportunities outside of football bcuz of that decision he made to join the mancs... And the mancs and Newcastle fans don't like him either so he's piggy in the middle
Oh, the irony of Henry and a hand-ball. Henchoz was accidental his one against Ireland, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Lol how was that accidental. And he did it TWICE
Shut up, that was 5 year's later😒
Irish are paedo catholics
Finally, highlights of this game that actually tells partially, how DOMINANT Arsenal were on the day. The second Owen goal, I will never forget. Left me in tears and shock. It was very reminiscent of Gigg's goal a few years earlier in the Semi-Final: Adam left grounded, Dixon trailing and Seaman unable to get there.
Arsenal absolutely battered us that day especially in the 2nd half. Seaman should be keeping that 2nd Owen goal out though. He was a world class keeper but his positioning was always suspect.
Owen was just too quick and strong for Dixon. There was nothing Dixon could do bar commit a professional foul.
Wow. That stadium looks incredible!
It's also in a great location.
Way better than shit wembley!
Hyypia was like Dolph Lungren at the back
lol
Imagine VAR in this game looool
Houllier dragged the club out of the gutter and brought such great times like these. Watching highlights again in 2024 doesn't show how dominant Arsenal were. They genuinely should've been 3 or 4 nil up by the time Owen got the first. That ball by Berger for the second doesn't get talked about enough. You're also reminded of how good of a player Michael Owen was, shame he tarnished his legacy at Liverpool by joining the Mancs
Henchoz should been off too. Disgusting how the corrupt officials allowed Liverpool to have 2 keepers that day.
The matches that made me a LFC supporter I was only 12 years old
the new me only 12? Christ you’re a bandwagon.
@@henryashley8668 Does that matter?
It's not like he choose to be born around 89
Same, but I was 8
Same
was 10 years old
I still remember this memorable match
It was fantastic wonderful final and Michael Owen won balloon Dr at that year in 2001 Liverpool my best club in the in the world
That pass from berger for owens goal was filthy. Dont know how we lost that day
That pass from Henry was too quick and slick 5:20
Remembered as the Owen final. Arsenal should of won it, but, this was Liverpool's year on the domestic front and European, everything fell into place for them.
Arsenal should have won? Nonsense!
@@MrJKS247 Arsenal were clearly the better team. It was a pure smash and grab by Liverpool. Henchoz blocked a goal with his hand so that's a pen and red card in this era with VAR in play.
I agree - as a Liverpool fan Arsenal edged it but once we drew level there was only one winner.
@@macanbhaird1966 edged? they completely dominated lol
@@ciaranoconnell4783but.. but but it wasn't you plank the rules then was the rules then simple as
Owen’s finest game in his career. I can watch that last goal again and again
One of the last great FA Cup finals. It still felt important back then. The media can try hype it up all they want , the competition has lost its soul
RIP Gerard ❤️
I’m confused
@@danielplainview1248Gerard Houllier, the former Liverpool manager, not Gerrard the player
Hyypia was a beast !!
This match = the absolute definition of 'Smash & Grab" lollll
Shame owen peaked early. Most natural striker since poss jimmy greaves
Liverpool fan. Arsenal tore us a new arsehole that day. The quintessential smash 'n' grab.
I watched this game when it was live. I still remember that heartbreaking last minute Owen goal.
Never has a game been so dominated by one side only to lose to the other since Arsenal v Luton 88 league cup. Handball on the line and Parlour never touched him for the free kick for owens first. Now that was daylight robbery.
Thank you for the memories!
One chance, one goal, one very very special forwards. Clive is my goat, so underrated 🥲
Liverpool mugged Arsenal here well and truly. Some small compensation for 1989 I guess, and also 1972 when a last-minute disallowed goal at Highbury in the last game of the season cost Liverpool the league title.
Followed this live on the radio. What a roller coaster ride it was
Rednaps tie like he’s still at school! Lol.
We were dead and buried. At least so it seemed. I had that sinking feeling that we were about to succumb to Arsenal in yet another cup final. But Owen was in top form and with Fowler and a young Gerrard, we somehow managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Sometimes it feels like someone's name is on the cup and the gods worked their magic for us that day.
If Arsenal had won 2-0 then hardly anyone would have complained, they were easily the better side that day. But you just don't give Michael Owen half a chance...
@@allthekingshorses7178 Absolutely. Arsenal were clearly the better side that day and they probably should have had a couple of penalties for handballs.
The FA Cup was a weird thing though and there often seemed to be a fated outcome in the end.
5:10 HTF do you miss this?
Owens pace was ridiculous!!!!
ln the days leading up to this game in may 2001. l had come to the simple conclusion that we could not let arsenal beat us again. The 1989 last minute league championship win at anfield 12 years previously still haunted me. We were never the same after that. Hillsborough had in some ways taken its toll on the club too. Dalglish resigning. And we had never really recovered from those events entering into the trophy barren decade of the 1990s...So l was aderment more than any other fan that LFC had to win. With the team then that LFC had formed under the late gerard houllier. And the way that we had been playing in this season of 2000-01?...... l knew that this time it was now pay back time...viva stephane henchoz. and michael owen. well for this game anyway....lol...
The Cardiff cup finals were great. It was a fantastic venue. The last finals that actually got some sunshine on the pitch. Has anyone noticed that we rarely watch football played in sunlight these days? At least the televised matches.
one of the main reasons I love the FA Cup final so much, played at noon
Owen Magic
That was a handball. Guess Henry got one against Ireland. Everything evens up at the end.
Remember this game. Newcastle fan was gutted when arsenal lost. How good was football back then.
The best FA cup finals have either Liverpool winning or losing but always Liverpool being involved spices up the FA cup cuz u never kno what's going to happen... The last couple of years it's been nothing but arsenal playing against some shit 3rd tier team and I bet the facup sponsors would wish klopp would take the facup more serious
I was wearing Owen's jersey watching the match in Nevada Smiths, a United bar in NYC. When he scored the second I thought for sure I was going to get murdered.
how tf did we win that😂
Back when Owen was every kid's favourite footballer
Naa Mate. Was still Henry
@@TH-kt5ir Owen was a world star in 2001 while Henry wasn't
The day made me fall in love to liverpool
I can’t watch this game with anyone but Tyldsley commentating
9:20 Berger’s pass! 😎
Defenders are to blame for the second Goal
Arsenal should won that game
Pretty sure I've heard of PizzaGate
I was there!
11.29, McCallister and Geoff Shreeves sneaking back to the changing room.
How I wish I could go back to May 12 01
1-0 Freddie Ljungberg (72 min)
1-1 Michael Owen (83 min)
1-2 Michael Owen (88 min)
Michael Owen was a mashine
Owen Young 😍
Owen Old 😭
And fat ron was so happy for us lol
That was a smash and grab from Liverpool. It’s just a lesson to take your chances.
Though how did Henchoz stay on after that save from Henry?
anybody else came here after the Collymore owen interview? :p
I love Liverpool but this day Arsenal played some fantastic football.
No Henry, you're the handball merchant of the early 2000s.
Crap.
Should have had a penalty early on but the referee missed it, lucky for Liverpool.
One of the biggest robberies at Wembley you will ever see...
Arsenal abused us that day but what a great day 😅
Pitch invader at 6:34 and 6:40 😂
I was 13/14 when this happened can’t remember that handball haha we would of been fucked if there was var
Кто со спортс ру?
Nounce Prince Andrew shaking hands with the players, better wash them.
I'd love to have this Liverpool golden shirt. Rare and beautiful 😍
🤝☝️
lmao at that comment at 9:03 about Owen's future and fitness having a "certainty about" them
also lol at that Liverpool fan at 9:43 with a Yankees cap
just because Liverpool are owned by the Red Sox owners doesn't mean that their fans automatically have to be Red Sox fans if they watch baseball. I've been a Mets and Liverpool fan since childhood and I'm not gonna start supporting the Red Sox just because FSG bought Liverpool.
In my memmory
Fowler should have passed it to Owen let him get his hat trick, muppet.
2:36 Handball , OK ref we all know you wanted LFC to win I understand, you didn't see it....
Owen going to Man Utd after this...they got a bargain
Ya but he ruined his connection with the Liverpool fans forever and isn't liked in those parts. His reputation took a nose dive bcuz every club he's played for none of the fans respect him not even Newcastle.. Owen got alot of bad advice when he was a player bcuz what kind of idiot would go thru liverpools academy and understand that the mancs are the ultimate enemy and then 8yrs later end up joining them just bcuz he wanted an epl trophy they he didn't earn he was a bench player.... He probably can't sleep at night with all the regrets he's made especially destroying his connection with Liverpool since now there back at the top of English football
He didn't go to Man Utd after this, there was two other clubs before that.
@@MoejiiOsmanTV Just shows you how completely stupid Liverpool fans are against one of their greatest ever players. It wasn't even a direct transfer from Liverpool to Utd, that's what makes it even worse. To stop a man plying his trade wherever he chooses sounds a lot like communism to me, and Liverpool wear red.
@@mrjones29
He wasn't a Real Madrid player...He wasn't a Newcastle player...He wasn't a Man Utd player...
He was a great Liverpool player and is now a huge supporter of Kim Jong Un.
Bless him
@@AD-xi9hy I don't about that Kimmy fella but Owen was a ManU player and Liverpool fans hate him for it.
Look at all those chances we had if we took it would of been different
2:32 it was penalty and red card
Ливерпуль!!!🇷🇺
PS one
2 long balls cup in the bag - arsenal were on top
HaHaHaHa.... and get over it!
Hand ball and a red card there. Henry should have been the highlight of the game.
FA cup finals used to be ace. Who gives a shit now, honestly.
What a stadium by the way. Actually thats why FA cup finals are shite. Wembley. Worst stadium in the world.
Wembley is terrible.
What's wrong with Wembley?
@@garthhancox7436 Too big, too far away from the pitch, too corporate, too much hospitality, too far away from town centre, shit pubs nearby, booming tannoys, soulless design. It's got all the charm of Westfield Shopping centre. I'd take the old Wembley any day.
