Hijacking Reality - Panel Discussion on the Practice and Impact of Russian Disinformation Techniques

  • The Putin regime has exploited the vulnerabilities of global social media platforms, using bots and trolls to promote its narratives. They also use it for coercive manipulation to change public attitudes towards Ukraine aid, and to cause fear, indecision, hesitation and caution among politicians and geo-political commentators. But Russia is not alone in using these methods; once developed the same techniques can be used by other powers, international and local to subvert democratic institutions and to warp public perception of the news and politics in their countries. And in a year of numerous elections, Russian multi-front aggression including info and Cyber poses an enormous threat.

    • @alvarobarcala
      @alvarobarcala Před měsícem

      That is happening not just in open platforms like youtube, but in the comment sections of digital diaries and such. Russian and Indian trolls are massively present, their comment very visible, while the rest of people, the real users, get delated or banned if their comments are not totally innocuous. Sometimes it feels as if the mass media, and people behind it (mostly tech billionaires), is aligned with Russia in a twisted way.

    • @alvarobarcala
      @alvarobarcala Před měsícem +1

      @@GrahamCStrouse This phenomena is waaaaaay too prominent as for being mere incompetence. For sure the automatic system delates things by mistake, but the contrast between the huge visibility and un-banned comments of trolls and the total restriction of real users is too big. If it were incompetence it would affect to both, trolls and real users, but it only seems to affect real users.

    Treaties Russia signed to respect the independence and the borders of Ukraine. For example:
    1) The Minsk Agreement (December 1991)
    2) The Budapest Memorandum (1994)
    3) The Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation (1997)
    4) The Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet (1997) - Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea was in violation of this one and of the extension from 2010
    In exchange for giving up their nukes, the U.S., the U.K. and Russia would guarantee Ukraine's security in a 1994 agreement known as the Budapest Memorandum. After the Soviet Union collapsed Ukraine was the third largest nuclear power in the world for a short time. Russia attacked a sovereign Ukraine twice. Their words mean nothing.

    This is a playlist I put together detailing the religious roots of Russia's war against Ukraine.
    "Holy Rus" and "we are brothers" sounds harmless, until you know what it means.
    Holy Rus is the "Union of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia".
    A holy war to reunite a wayward holy part of Holy Rus is how "we are brothers" can be uttered with such violent intent.
    To quote a Russian Orthodox priest on Russian media:
    "we don't hate Ukrainians. They're our brothers, and they are sick. In love we must cure them from this "Ukrainianess" that's gone on for too long. It's like drawing worms and pus from an infected limb. For their own good and for ours the word Ukraine must disappear, so we can reunite Holy Rus. This is how we will heal the holy body."
    It's very tsarist. Very Russian Orthodox.
    The third video in the playlist is about the Russian Orthodox military Cathedral. It celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and contains holy relics of the defeated Nazis.
    Victory Day cult mixed with the cult of Holy Rus.
    The Russian Orthodox Church is a special sort of Frankenstein's monster of churches.
    To quote a critical Russian priest: "our altar is not dedicated to Christ. Not to Christ's victory, but to something different."
    The altar of the Russian Orthodox Church is dedicated to the Victory of Holy Rus - the union of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia - whether Ukrainians want it or not.

      It's not true, you have to be on Facebook with your own name and picture and yet it's full of bots and trolls, and it wouldn't even affect the tone of the conversations, because elsewhere on social media, where you have to have your own name, it's the same crap as here, it would help if this ridiculous platform actually moderated things in a way other than with a rogue ai bot, which mostly deletes factual comments, but lets you repeat the Kremlin thousand times debunked lies,

    Ah, resilience, yes, this is interesting idea. I'm glad that Mr.Guntar remind us about Information Domain. There are many answers in this words. But first we must remember, Domain of what is it? It is Domain of Warfare. Same as Land, Water, Air and even Space. As a citizen of Kyiv, I know very well what cross-domain interaction looks like. Saw it many times. So that is the answer - foreign malicious actors in the Information Domain may (and should) encounter actors from other Domain of Warfare. Ask Ryan McBeth for example. Hi can explain it from technical point of view, and from intelligence point of view too.
    Another point that i want to point is that this "fight for minds" happens inside minds of target group - UK/EU/US citizens. This fight is going on your territory already. And it will stay there until western will to project power will be bordered by internationally recognized borders.

      "Another point I want to make is that this 'battle for minds' is taking place in the minds of the target audience - UK/EU/US citizens. This fight is already going on in your territory. And it will remain there as long as the West's desire to project power is not limited by internationally recognized borders."
      Main idea is that while you defending your position, fight is going on your territory. It doesn't matter do we talk about kinetic warfare or informational influence, it happens where you live, in your home. So all collateral and direct damage happens there too.
      If the parties cannot reach any agreement, there are only two ways to reduce the damage to your territory - to move the fight to the opponent's territory or to stop recognizing this territory as yours - aka capitulaion.

    i find it can be useful to conceptualize computing as fundamentally consisting of input -> processing -> output, & ai as expanding the processing potential through increasingly autonomous pattern-matching capability. i think this can help those with limited technical knowledge to easily locate the core issue, enabling them to meaningfully take part in more detailed conversations without becoming overwhelmed by terms of art that can otherwise appear somewhat without clear fixings :)

    • @millrace32
      @millrace32 Před měsícem

      i think the fact that there's a failure of understanding at a conceptual level is suggested by the general response to biden's debate, & also the behaviour of the various press corps more widely. there really doesn't appear any public recognition on the part of cable news networks that hostile powers are - without the slightest doubt - training the pattern-seeking & pattern-matching potential of ai on public statements of politicians. with that in mind, a slick debater could be playing right into their hands. & because we don't understand ai as first-&-foremost revolutionizing patterning, we seem doomed to be trapped
