  • Learning how to estimate drywall (sheetrock) jobs is an important skill if you're a handyman or contractor. Estimating drywall jobs can mean the difference between being successful or failing.
    In my market, drywall repair jobs are some of the most popular work a handyman can get. Learning how to bid drywall jobs is something that everyone in the handyman or contractor business needs to learn.
    Estimating drywall jobs is not cut and dried. Every house is different, every drywall repair job is different. With experience, you'll learn the finer points of pricing drywall jobs.
    In this video, I'll take you through 3 ways you can estimate drywall jobs. I've used all 3 techniques in the past. But there's one method I prefer above the others these days.
    Drywall finishing prices are all over the board in my area. Never let what someone else charges for drywall repair have an impact on your pricing! You should know your expenses and know what you have to make in order to be profitable.
    Learn to price your drywall jobs correctly and with enough profit if you want to stay in this business.

    $2 s.f. It can go up depending on the layout of the room. More for ceilings. If it's a big project I call my drywall guy (he's hella faster than I am) and add 20% to the price he gives me. I have a good solid clause in my contract (which I review with the client at signing) about unknown/unforeseen damages discovered in the building process.
    Johnny AppleStead mentioned getting uniforms . Well, to me, you look properly dressed for drywall work. When I meet clients I dress well, but do not wear a uniform. I have been told I look like your stereo-typical contractor a few times so, I guess, I do not need one. When you look young and inexperienced, like Honest Lee (seems like a great kid, by the way) a uniform probably helps.
    Hate to say it, but you look like you've been down the road a few times (like me) and that means you look like you have experience. Mostly it's a verbal thing I have found. If you are not fumbling for words, or product names, and you are straight forward and honest that goes a long way.

      Yep, if it's a very large job, I call my drywall subs. It's him and 4 other guys and they can get the sheetrock up, tape and mudded a 100x faster than I can! As for appearance, it just comes with the territory. I go through work clothes quite a lot and don't like to wear my good clothes unless I'm meeting customers for the first time. My regular customers know that I'll show up looking like this when it's time to work.

    drywall is a funny one to price, It all depends on the job. I usually change by the sheet. There is an extra charge if I need to do demolition work and I do not include texture and paint, if they want that its an additional charge for that work. I tend to stick to per sheet charge if I find issues that are charged by the hour and I make that apparent in the contract.

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  Před 3 lety

      To get a ballpark of what to charge, ask around and see what other contractors are charging. Don't simply set your price by that though. You'll need to know what your business expenses are and how much money you need in order to pay those bills as well as your living expenses.

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  Před 4 lety +1

      I typically charge by the number of sheets. If it's 10 or less, it's usually $50 per sheet. Over 10 sheets, I sub it out. Getting too old to hang that much sheetrock! :)

    So I'm pretty new doing drywall as an independent contractor. I was on a team for a few years and am trying to figure out what is a reasonable rate to charge for drywall. I've been charging $40 a sheet but should I charge for materials on top of that or should I include it in my rate? Grand rapids mi area if anyone is curious.

    • @BlueCollarDIY
      @BlueCollarDIY  Před 3 lety +3

      Sorry, I don't know that area. But whenever I price a drywall job by the sheet, it includes the materials, mudding and taping. Basically, it's ready to primer texture, and paint when I'm done. If they want those things, it's extra.

    100$ a sheet supplied stocked taped finished mud screws for walls.... $200 sheet ceilings .... do the ceilings yourself and own a panel lifter.. Buy a good one from telepro and pay the extra money over the imports. That eliminates a helper for the lids .. cha-ching

  • @New-Breed-Drywall-And-Paint

    I think it in on a lot of different factors. This is the neighborhood I’m working in, I am definitely going to up my price If I am Working in $1 million neighborhood with that being said I do not Cut corners
    Just because it’s not a higher end job . A higher end home is typically going to have Taller walls fancy curves and just more detail workLonger distances to carry material a lot more stuff took mask off Iused to be the guy Who always said it was wrong to charge a multimillionaire more money and that you should charge a millionaire the same that you would charge a normal customer but that is the furthest thing from the truth from my experience they are the hardest customers to work forAs far as controlling dust ,only being able to enter the job through a certain door etc. and dammit they don’t like to release that payment. No complaints on the work as a matter of fact they would tell you how amazing it is but they act like their hand can’t grab a pen and write a check it always has to be when their secretary is in the office for their assistant I’m sure they’re not all like that but just from my experience

      Are you still getting that? I'm up in Evergreen and going to be adding drywall to my services. Atleast for under 30 sheet jobs. Im solo but can toss some rock around. Definitely prefer the finishing and painting more but lord the quality of rockers up here is insanely bad. Cant keep losing my ass bidding a job before hanging is done only to come into a nightmare. Need to just get back into throwing rock again

      @@BlueCollarDIY I'm having a hard time getting an estimate for just labor. As if all the materials have been purchased. Tape, mud, drywall, drywall screws, pans and mud knives already purchased. How much per square foot to just hang and finish it? Materials already provided. I ask this because I live in rural hawaii. Sheets of drywall at home depot or our local building supply store HPM can cost anywhere from 26$ to upwards of $35 a sheet. The price fluctuates constantly so I just bid the materials separately to compensate for whatever price I may have to pay at that time. So I need to know what the standard rate is for just the labor. If I bid the materials separate from the labor I can get it done cost efficiently. I hang and finish really fast. I am a big guy and can sling that drywall. So obviously charging hourly would do me a disservice . If I can find a reasonable rate per square foot for the labor then I can do the work twice as fast and get more per hour. So I guess to make a long story short, my question is how much would you charge per square foot to hang, tape and finish the drywall ready for primer but not primed if the materials were already paid for? And thank you for your reply and bearing with my super long comment.
