Actually, they hid a Christian boy, a student at University, who refused to sign a Nazi loyalty statement. Your point is well taken, though. Miep and Jan were absolute heroes. They helped people even knowing they were putting themselves in terrible danger. Plus, Jan was an active member of the Dutch Resistance. They were truly good people who believed strongly in resisting irrational racial hatred. I suggest to anyone who'd like to read more to consult Miep's book, "Anne Frank Remembered." It's shocking what the Germans put the occupied countries through. Totally sickening.

Actually, he wasn't Jewish, he was Christian, but he refused to enlist in Nazi Youth or sign up to fight for Germany, so he was labeled a War Criminal by the Dutch Nazis, thrown out of University, and forced to hide or be sent to a concentration camp. His name was Kuno van der Horst, and he was the son of a friend of Miep's landlady. If you're interested in learning more, you can read about it in "Anne Frank Remembered." In the book he's called Karel Van der Hart, but that was a pseudonym. It's an amazingly thorough and well-written book, published in 1987 by Miep Gies and her co-author, Allison Gold.

Have you read "Anne Frank Remembered" by Mrs. Gies? While promoting the book with Allison Gold, she spoke many times about the ring. I met Mrs. Gies, a totally lovely woman who wasn't wearing the ring that day, but only because her fingers by then were gnarled with RA. Please, don't posture about how special you are to know facts like these. Many of us do, we just don't evince false modesty in comments sections about how we're the only ones who find them "interesting."

Welp. I just finished staying up half the night crying at meips book. Might as well spend the morning watching the documentary. I don’t know what’s with my sudden fascination this year Holocaust stories make my heart ache but I can’t stop seeking them out.
Wow, I thought I knew everything about Miep's story but I didn't know the part about her standing up to the Nazi goon about Jan. "You keep your hands off my husband! He has nothing to do with this!" She probably figured she'd be arrested & deported with the rest of them so what was there to lose... My guess, anyway. Incredible lady, & I'm glad she lived a long life.

This little group of heroes who risked everything for Friendship and decency were named among the Righteous Among The Nations after the War by the Jewish people. Like Schindler they proved themselves worthy of the honour. For some reason, it warmed me to hear that the butcher and his Wife also were protecting people...that happened a lot more than is generally spoken of. War brings out the best and the worst on all sides of the conflict...some become hardened, selfish, and cruel while others find the generosity of spirit to truly empathize and do all that they can to help.🖤🇨🇦
I only finished reading the book yesterday and have been looking up content online related to Anne Frank. Hearing the testimony of people who knew Anne personally, in this case, her very helper, is very special indeed. Anne's story is heart-rending and it deserves to be heard the world over if we're to guard against the evil of Nazism and Fascism from emerging again. Miep is a true hero. She deserves every praise for disobeying the German's orders for turning in the Jews at the risk of her own life. But she went even further. She helped those Jews in hiding with provisions, personal gifts and hope of escape one day. It's fair to say without Meip, Kugler, Bep, and Klieman we wouldn't have Anne's Diary or learn about her and other's struggles to hang on to dear life till the end. Her account of Anne & others' arrest is chilling. Thanks for sharing this video.

Utmost example of heroism and loyalty. I am not sure how many of us will be ready to put ourselves in danger to help our friends. I wish this story had a happy ending where Anne could walk freely without any fear, go to Paris and do everything she wished to after the war.
I visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, Holland, and it was very interesting and moving. I also visited the Anne Frank Museum in the Mitte District of Berlin, Germany, and I highly recommend it. Many of the Frank's friends and relatives lived in the area, so it's in a very historical location.
God bless Miep and all the helpers who tried so hard for so long to protect the Anne Frank family and all their friends. What a monumental job it would have been risking their very lives in order to be decent human beings too other decent human beings that just happened to be Jewish to Hitler's and his monster henchmen's disdain. Many people hid Jewish people and for all those people you are all truly heroes in my book. I have huge respect and admiration for Meip Gies and all the other helpers who went out of their ways, at times put their own lives in danger only to help hide successfully, the 8 occupants at the annexe for over two years!! Hats off to all of them !! RIP.
She has said that she is not a hero, not special. She just did what any decent person would do. I think most of us would beg to differ. She absolutely was a hero. Every person that was a beacon of hope for the jewish people (or the Roma or any other group that was targeted by those subhumans) who had none during that horror was a hero. She went above and beyond. What she did was not merely "decent." It was extraordinary.

Suzanne I Saw The Annex Back In The mid 60 's With My Family , So You Can Think What I Looked Like When The Franks & Others Went Into Hiding With Them, My Dad And Step Mom And Younger Sister Stopped To See It On There Way TO Africa , in The Mid 80"s They Where Then Turning It Into A Museum Then , But Like I Said I Saw It Like It Was , I Read The Book in About 2 Days Or Less ,
I went a couple weeks ago during the pandemic, best time to go, low traffic, all rooms available apart from the attic from Peter's room which is closed off. Annes Wall hangings and Otto's height markings of the girls as they grew are still there. Such a captivating and humbling experience.
What love, & courage to you Dearest Meip, Jan & your young child. Of course this goes to the other few brave people who opened up their homes or attics to other Dearest Jewish people that had to go into hiding. Amen.

Hitler was a horrible man but he couldn’t have done all he did without all the people supporting him. There was a lot of anti- semitism in Europe before the war and too many people were happy to hate and persecute the Jews. There is just too much hatred in the world. So thankful for the many who hid and helped Jews, gypsies and anyone the Nazis were hunting. Miep’s story is inspiring!
Miep wrote her story and it was published in 1987, I still have my copy, excellent reading! She was originally from Vienna and came to the Netherlands as a child after the Great War and remained there. She died in 2010 one month short of her 101st birthday.
I would love to get a copy of it. I would really want to read it. the one book I remember reading and never forgetting was The diary of Anne Frank. It was many years ago. We're watching the old black and white movie with Shelly Winters who played Anne

I felt Anne Frank is one of the survivor in second world war but today I watched the movie. I am feeling very bad and at the time of watching I only want they will reconnect again but it's gone in tragedy way.. How brutally tortured jueds in that war is unpredictable and the only way is I have to experience.

I saw this years ago but was glad when it popped up on CZcams today. I watched every second of it. It is amazing to see and hear Miep talking about everything that happened and being shown in the places where it all happened. I was lucky years ago to go first thing in the morning to the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. I understand the lines are long now, but that day my husband and I had the place to ourselves for the first few minutes, so I could quietly walk around and stand in those rooms I had read about so often since I got my copy of the diary at about age 12. Miep's book -- I assume this documentary was done around the same time? -- is very good. Well done.
I toured the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and it was very interesting. I also went to the Anne Frank Museum in the Mitte District of Berlin, which is also very informative, because many of the Frank's friends and relatives lived nearby. So I highly recommend visiting Berlin, Germany.

I think this was back in 1998. Miep was almost 90. Hard to believe that this is considered pretty old...but it's hard to believe that this amazing woman died back in 2010.

I miss Anne Frank so much I wish she was alive today. I would like to talk to her in person if she was alive now that she dead I can't talk to her anymore, I feel so bad for them
This was a very moving documentary in so many ways. I always knew who Anne Frank was and that her diary was written while in hiding but I had thought she was hiding alone and they just found her. I always avoided studying the Holocaust because I knew how awful it was and now have only learned of Anne Frank's story through these videos, I am wondering if they ever found out who told the Germans about where they were hiding and how did they know to go to the bookcase? And I am assuming Charlotte the dentists wife was not Jewish or else she would be in hiding too. Could she have revealed the information to someone she thought she trusted who then perhaps told the Germans? What happened to her and didn't the Nazis know she was married to a Jewish man since they all had to register as a Jew. I am just curious. They had provisions to stay alive and had made it through 2 years so only a little bit longer and they all would have made it. The two couples, The dentist (unsure how to spell his name) and his wife Charlotte and the children Anne, Margo and Peter who would have been able to pursue a career, fallen in love, found a spouse and had many children. Generations of people never to be because of that anonymous phone call.
They've never been able to find out who told the gestapo about all of them living in the back building, there's always been assumptions like someone who worked for them, or the radio they listened too could of been to loud a lot of people broke into the offices before they were found out , there's a documentary about mr Frank having a German friend on the outside and they exchanged letters before they all went into hiding so there's been assumptions that's he could of told about them but nothing has ever come up from it. But it's also always been a subject on my mind who told.
+Ÿasmin Bradlëy-Bööth since I wrote that last post, my interest in studying this story as well as the entire history behind it and I came across a video of Miep speaking to a gathering in the late 90s and someone asked her if they ever found out who turned them in. She replied that there will never be 100 % concrete evidence, but the closest they came to finding out after years of investigation was one of the ladies who cleaned the office who was the only other who had access to that building during odd hours.
Regarding Dr. Pfeffer and Charlotte; they weren't actually married during his time in hiding. Charlotte married him posthumously, after the war, with Mr Frank handling the details. Later on they (Charlotte and Mr. Frank) had some kind of "falling out" because of the way Dr. Pfeiffer was portrayed in the diary and various plays etc. I can't remember exact details but it seems like I read that Charlottes papers (letters etc.) were found for sale at some kind of market after her death.
Pfeffer was a typical German man. In his mind, children were to be seen, not heard, and what he wanted came first. and first, and AHEAD of first. Anne's father was so far different that there were bound to be clashes between them. She portrayed him as she saw him. I'm sure the Pfeffer that Charlotte saw was a distinctly different man.
Mr.Frank should've have cut out parts of the Diary. There was a section that was deemed "sexual" and Otto removed it. The only editing that should be done is to fix grammar issues and spell checks. It is not in Otto's power to removed what belongs to Anne, even if he is her father.
Logical Deception The sexual parts no. I guess the publisher also had a thing or two to say when the diary was published. Regarding the parts in which Anne writes badly about her mother, I understand that Otto wanted to leave those parts out as well, especially since Edith Frank died at Auschwitz.
Man. These people are true heroes. The world needs more people like them. In my eyes, they are much more worthy than any celebrity of today.

War brings out the best and the worst on all sides of the conflict...some become hardened, selfish, and cruel while others find the generosity of spirit to truly empathize and do all that they can to help.🖤🇨🇦

Anne lost all will to live, thinking that no family member was left. Maybe if she had known that her father was alive she might well have lived.

I only finished reading the book yesterday and have been looking up content online related to Anne Frank. Hearing the testimony of people who knew Anne personally, in this case, her very helper, is very special indeed. Anne's story is heart-rending and it deserves to be heard the world over if we're to guard against the evil of Nazism and Fascism from emerging again.
Miep is a true hero. She deserves every praise for disobeying the German's orders for turning in the Jews at the risk of her own life. But she went even further. She helped those Jews in hiding with provisions, personal gifts and hope of escape one day. It's fair to say without Meip, Kugler, Bep, and Klieman we wouldn't have Anne's Diary or learn about her and other's struggles to hang on to dear life till the end. Her account of Anne & others' arrest is chilling. Thanks for sharing this video.

Utmost example of heroism and loyalty. I am not sure how many of us will be ready to put ourselves in danger to help our friends. I wish this story had a happy ending where Anne could walk freely without any fear, go to Paris and do everything she wished to after the war.

I read the diary 4 or 5 times as a kid. Just now got to see this video. My God !! I can't even find the words to express my thoughts!
I visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, Holland, and it was very interesting and moving. I also visited the Anne Frank Museum in the Mitte District of Berlin, Germany, and I highly recommend it. Many of the Frank's friends and relatives lived in the area, so it's in a very historical location.

She has said that she is not a hero, not special. She just did what any decent person would do. I think most of us would beg to differ. She absolutely was a hero. Every person that was a beacon of hope for the jewish people (or the Roma or any other group that was targeted by those subhumans) who had none during that horror was a hero. She went above and beyond. What she did was not merely "decent." It was extraordinary.

Yeah you can still get up there. The rooms are still on display but you can't roam around freely anymore. Because there were so many visitors (and too little room for all of them) the museum bought the house next to it and remodeled its entire route around the place so it can handle the capacity of visitors.
The apartment in 37 Merwedeplein seems to have been restored to 1930s period.

Its a place for writers who can't write freely, in there own countrys. They stay there for a year. Well it was when it was refurbished.

There is a wonderful video about this wonderful woman called "Anne Frank Remembered". She was a person completely without guile. A rarity. She tells her story plainly, unembelished. A fine woman.

I have been to the Annex that Hiding Place for all the Frank Family ,when I was Around 7 with my family on a trip , I saw it what it would like Like back then , Through the years my family been back , Now it is a Museum Now , And You Can Not Go Up to the Annex The Hiding Place , But I did with my Sister and Dad , My Mom and Brother Matt stay and waiting for Us , I read the Diary of Anne Frank and Other Books the Meip Wrote , The Family That Hind The Frank Family are True Hero's RIP PEACE TO ALL Love Julie Hastings

Suzanne I Saw The Annex Back In The mid 60 's With My Family , So You Can Think What I Looked Like When The Franks & Others Went Into Hiding With Them, My Dad And Step Mom And Younger Sister Stopped To See It On There Way TO Africa , in The Mid 80"s They Where Then Turning It Into A Museum Then , But Like I Said I Saw It Like It Was , I Read The Book in About 2 Days Or Less ,
I went a couple weeks ago during the pandemic, best time to go, low traffic, all rooms available apart from the attic from Peter's room which is closed off. Annes Wall hangings and Otto's height markings of the girls as they grew are still there. Such a captivating and humbling experience.
I have no doubt that these people are standing in the presence of God.
What love, & courage to you Dearest Meip, Jan & your young child. Of course this goes to the other few brave people who opened up their homes or attics to other Dearest Jewish people that had to go into hiding. Amen.

One mans hatred. 1 man and look at the horror he created. We must be aware. We must learn from history , we must! Otherwise they’ve perished for nothing. Hitler was a horrible man but he couldn’t have done all he did without all the people supporting him. There was a lot of anti- semitism in Europe before the war and too many people were happy to hate and persecute the Jews. There is just too much hatred in the world. So thankful for the many who hid and helped Jews, gypsies and anyone the Nazis were hunting. Miep’s story is inspiring!
Miep wrote her story and it was published in 1987, I still have my copy, excellent reading! She was originally from Vienna and came to the Netherlands as a child after the Great War and remained there. She died in 2010 one month short of her 101st birthday.
I would love to get a copy of it. I would really want to read it. the one book I remember reading and never forgetting was The diary of Anne Frank. It was many years ago. We're watching the old black and white movie with Shelly Winters who played Anne

@@ljmcdonald2703 Yes! It is told in Ann Frank : the whole story.. The actress playing miep tells Ann she was abandoned by her mother at 11 or in 1920 because she couldnt take care of her but she forgave her .
I felt Anne Frank is one of the survivor in second world war but today I watched the movie.
I am feeling very bad and at the time of watching I only want they will reconnect again but it's gone in tragedy way..
How brutally tortured jueds in that war is unpredictable and the only way is I have to experience.

I saw this years ago but was glad when it popped up on CZcams today. I watched every second of it. It is amazing to see and hear Miep talking about everything that happened and being shown in the places where it all happened. I was lucky years ago to go first thing in the morning to the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. I understand the lines are long now, but that day my husband and I had the place to ourselves for the first few minutes, so I could quietly walk around and stand in those rooms I had read about so often since I got my copy of the diary at about age 12. Miep's book -- I assume this documentary was done around the same time? -- is very good. Well done.

I toured the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, and it was very interesting. I also went to the Anne Frank Museum in the Mitte District of Berlin, which is also very informative, because many of the Frank's friends and relatives lived nearby. So I highly recommend visiting Berlin, Germany.

I think this was back in 1998. Miep was almost 90. Hard to believe that this is considered pretty old...but it's hard to believe that this amazing woman died back in 2010.

This was a very moving documentary in so many ways. I always knew who Anne Frank was and that her diary was written while in hiding but I had thought she was hiding alone and they just found her. I always avoided studying the Holocaust because I knew how awful it was and now have only learned of Anne Frank's story through these videos, I am wondering if they ever found out who told the Germans about where they were hiding and how did they know to go to the bookcase? And I am assuming Charlotte the dentists wife was not Jewish or else she would be in hiding too. Could she have revealed the information to someone she thought she trusted who then perhaps told the Germans? What happened to her and didn't the Nazis know she was married to a Jewish man since they all had to register as a Jew. I am just curious. They had provisions to stay alive and had made it through 2 years so only a little bit longer and they all would have made it. The two couples, The dentist (unsure how to spell his name) and his wife Charlotte and the children Anne, Margo and Peter who would have been able to pursue a career, fallen in love, found a spouse and had many children. Generations of people never to be because of that anonymous phone call.
They've never been able to find out who told the gestapo about all of them living in the back building, there's always been assumptions like someone who worked for them, or the radio they listened too could of been to loud a lot of people broke into the offices before they were found out , there's a documentary about mr Frank having a German friend on the outside and they exchanged letters before they all went into hiding so there's been assumptions that's he could of told about them but nothing has ever come up from it. But it's also always been a subject on my mind who told.
+Ÿasmin Bradlëy-Bööth since I wrote that last post, my interest in studying this story as well as the entire history behind it and I came across a video of Miep speaking to a gathering in the late 90s and someone asked her if they ever found out who turned them in. She replied that there will never be 100 % concrete evidence, but the closest they came to finding out after years of investigation was one of the ladies who cleaned the office who was the only other who had access to that building during odd hours.

Regarding Dr. Pfeffer and Charlotte; they weren't actually married during his time in hiding. Charlotte married him posthumously, after the war, with Mr Frank handling the details. Later on they (Charlotte and Mr. Frank) had some kind of "falling out" because of the way Dr. Pfeiffer was portrayed in the diary and various plays etc. I can't remember exact details but it seems like I read that Charlottes papers (letters etc.) were found for sale at some kind of market after her death.
Pfeffer was a typical German man. In his mind, children were to be seen, not heard, and what he wanted came first. and first, and AHEAD of first. Anne's father was so far different that there were bound to be clashes between them. She portrayed him as she saw him. I'm sure the Pfeffer that Charlotte saw was a distinctly different man.
Mr.Frank should've have cut out parts of the Diary. There was a section that was deemed "sexual" and Otto removed it. The only editing that should be done is to fix grammar issues and spell checks. It is not in Otto's power to removed what belongs to Anne, even if he is her father.
+Logical Deception He did it because in the 40's and 50's you couldn't write openly about sexuality. It was a very different mentality back then.

Logical Deception The sexual parts no. I guess the publisher also had a thing or two to say when the diary was published. Regarding the parts in which Anne writes badly about her mother, I understand that Otto wanted to leave those parts out as well, especially since Edith Frank died at Auschwitz.
Maby he left out the sexual part out of respect for his daughter. Otto did the best he knew how to do.
