If everyone had as much integrity as Dave has in his little finger, the world would be a much better place.
It’s worth it for techs to give people little hints like this. I make my wage if I’m at a jobsite or in the shop twiddling my thumbs. Don’t get me wrong the work is good, but any time I’m not in a hot ass attic and getting paid is a time we’ll spent. If giving advice like that means less bs calls then id say that’s a win win for everyone.
Agreed!
there are 4 areas of home services that the tech will only go out if the customer agrees to pay for a service call:
1 plumbing
2 el ectrical
3 locksmith
4 AC/Heating
Nobody says do it for free but most when they hear they have to pay 1 hour or around $125 they think that they should get a free estimate, screw that
the scammers in the ac business is just unreal.its like the wild west.
Scammers?
They are thieves with a license to get away with it.
Nothing is ever done when they are caught when they should lose their license.
@@mikejohn0088 then do it yourself and save, nobody ask how much overhead a company has, why waste 2 hours on that when you can change an entire unit and charge 7-8K ?
A couple of months ago I called a local A/C company here in Florida. For two hours they looked around and did pretty much nothing. Cost me $200,00 for a service call where they did absolutely no service at all. After that I decided I was going to learn how to do it myself. I got my EPA 608 certification yesterday. Bought some R-410A and the tools to do it myself. With a little practice, no more A/C companies. It isn't rocket science. These videos certainly help.
It's like they think that their customers are absolutely stupid or think their equipment is freaking magic or something. So many scammers in various trades and it's sad
Its a shame companies cant make an honest living instead screw customers with bogus repairs.
It’s also stupid because doing shit like this is why a lot of customers just buy their own replacement and call you to do the work. Over the last few years I’ve had more and more calls like that and it’s directly because scummy companies can’t just make a profit , they have to make sure the boss can take another vacation or get that new truck for himself.
People do not truly understand how much airflow is affected by just the smallest amount of adjustments. Raising or lowering the blade an inch, ONE inch makes huge difference in some cases…you just proved that!! You’ve earned a customer for life and likely many referrals
Great troubleshooting job and fix. You definitely have a very happy customer. This begs the question of what happened to a good days work ethic. Well done! 👍
There's a special place in ''Time out'' for companies like that Thx for posting ...
I'm surprised how noisy the AC unit is, even after the fix. I'm spoiled by my Mitsubishi mini-split, which is nearly inaudible.
Yea the mini splits are obnoxiously quiet. :)
My local guy wants $800 to pump mine down and top it off to spec. I did a DIY and lost a few ounces 10 years ago. I just want it weighed in and nothing else. (410A) It works just fine. I want it to spec though.
"Load of baloney" is very polite way of phrasing it...
Had a similar issue one time. All we had to do was tighten the fan grate screws down a bit and fixed the issue. Another company said the same thing. We didnt even charge her. Like your videos have a good day
I know of a scammer hvac guy here in the high desert. Rich lavish bastard. Has all kinds of toys at his house. Karma will take care of him. Thank you for what you do and to show everyone how to save money. You are a Saint!
I needed a new cap late night on a Sunday. Black Diamond was the only one that I could get to come out. $200 for a fan motor cap. They also said fan and motor needed to be cleaned and my exchanger was bad. He quoted me 4k to clean my fan and motor and the underside of my secondary. Yep 4k!!! They said it would take a full day and be a big job. I removed the fan and motor, cleaned it myself, did it in 2 hours. I also bought a snake camera and there’s nothing wrong w my heat exchangers. No rust, nothing.
Doesn’t surprise me. Why didn’t you call me? 🤣
im pretty sure part of that quote was replacing the heat exchanger. Stop giving false information. And $200 for a capacitor on a late night SUNDAY is a steal! You're just a cheapscape lol
@GanjjaGuru super cheap bastard this goofy is
I'm glad I found your channel. Good guy that's a great honest tech
Dave. Great job helping customer! God Bless.
You always get a "discount" when somebody is trying to scam you...
Thanks brother for what you do for the community and righting some wrongs out there. We salute you my friend! 👍
U are such a good honest person ..honest people like u..very few people...thx so much to teaching how to work and be honest with people..God bless u💯💯💯💯💯
Thank you. From watching your videos i replaced my capacitor(12 years old) before the summer heat.
Thanks Craig
Great video, and good on you for doing the right thing.
I appreciate your videos and helping people work on their own systems. I’ve been buying refrigerant off eBay for 5 years. Whenever I tell an hvac tech they always dismiss it and say it’s Chinese knockoff 410a. Whatever that means. Most techs just go off what their boss tells them and never actually research anything themselves.
An honest service person deserves to be recognized. Just came across this video. So I've liked and subscribed with notifications on ALL. I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT MY OWN AC PROB!!!!!! So maybe I'll learn something watching your channel.
Thanks so much! That means a lot. If you need some technical support check out our Patreon membership at Patreon.com/diyhvacguy! Hope we can help you out! Cheers
Well done I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank God for honest people like yourself...there are so very many shiesters out there ..if people can find an honest home repair, maintenance, mechanic, plumber etc they need to cherish them.
Thanks so much for the video!!! I had three companies come out U paid for a new fan motor an the noise is not going away!!!! I will be trying this tomorrow!!! 🙏
Thanks! Great Job
Great job thank you for being honest
I like the way you named the pos and gave your price .....great stuff!!
Good stuff dude. Thanks
Thanks it was actually happening to mines as well.
Great job and discovery! Love your videos, though my spouse is terrified that I want to replace our HVAC single-handedly now. (sigh)
Very good, thank you.
Wow no shortage of bad ripoff’s out there. Enjoy your videos thank you
Hey my friend.....you are simply a good, honest technician who cares for people and customers! Well done sir, well done! Have a great holiday weekend!
You as well! 🙏🏻
Omg my system sounds just like this. Now I have a reference point. Thank you
I have never understood how some HVAC companies sleep with a clear conscience. They play on the HVAC ignorance of the general public. Dave, I subscribed to your channel and clicked the like button because of your knowledge and expertise and above all your integrity and honesty. Public, check to see if your AC unit is under warranty. If it is and it is worked on by another company it can void your remaining contract. If it is not then researching, if you can use the computer will assist you in determining the best route to take in what could be causing your unit to malfunction. Stop allowing these demonic and wicked HVAC companies from ripping you off. These thugs need to be put in jail and their businesses shut down (HVAC pimps.)
is this a typical Lennox issue? My neighbor has a similar unit and it made this exact same awful noise. She called somebody and they must have fixed it as it's silent ever since but ohh boi that sound was horrible.
Nice to see honest people out there! I'm pretty sure you've earned a returning customer that day.
I had a customer with similar issue. Blade hitting motor. Sounded like big issue. Fixed it and some how one blade was bent. Just bent it up slightly problem fixed. Couldn't charge for it. They gave me a bottle of wine. But your right, there are a lot of scammers out there.
I do HVAC controls and I know how bad commercial installations can be and you know residential is much worse overall. I'm installing my next unit myself after I get my EPA608. Most customers have no idea how an HVAC system works and it's easy to makeup issues. It doesn't matter what brand unit you go with it's all in the installation and making sure they run nitrogen through lines when brazing, pressure test with nitrogen, and pull a good vacuum. When my system was installed I made sure they did all that and 7 years later my system hasn't been touched except by me to replace the capacitor.
Good Job Buddy.
Always do the right thing people, I hate HVAC scammers
You just got a customer for life and they will be your best salesman as well. Their friends already have already heard the story.
Thank you :)))
Well done sir. I unfortunately have the 3 ton version of this unit that's 7 years old. I say unfortunate because I just don't like Lennox but I got it with the coil 3 years old for $500 because someone was going ductless.
Anyway since the condenser is outside a bedroom window I would talk with them about installing a soft start. My ICM 870-16 really quieted down the startup on the unit.
Regular service call 100. You are the nicest ac man
There is a plastic housing around the fan. The blade may have made contact with the housing. Lowering would probably make contact with the housing eliminated
Good job..
Dude, you are the man.
Thanks for not fucking ppl over.
Good one
Good video
EXCELLENT!
My condenser fan stuck this spring. I just removed it and freed it up. Fine, but it stuck again. The motor is not serviceable and cheapest was $165 shipped. It is 21 years old though. 😁
It's a special world. When the scams are 1000x more prevalent. Most know it when it is. And will not put up with it. Keep these coming. Cheers
When in doubt call it out. A second opinion or third that is
Nice my friend I be learning from you one question how much you add to the R22 and the label say 6 lb. My air conditioner is not giving cool air for almost one year we don’t refill that
Honest guy.....
You saved them some money, sure, and it makes you an honest business person, sure.
But what it doesn’t do , is stop all the giant companies with the television commercials from ripping people off.
However…kudos to you my friend ! It’s certainly a step in the right direction !!!
To be fair also…I’m a contractor who does the same thing you do my friend ! I treat people with honesty and integrity, and I’m never looking for work…I would guess that’s exactly what your business is like !
Great video…and great looking out for the customers !
Actually he does help prevent big companies from ripping some people off by showing folks these valuable videos, so people can either do it themselves or be a knowledgeable customer.
I replaced my 10 year old fan and motor in March. The original failed after eleven years. I have had the spare motor in my garage for 5 years.
ON the estimate they don't mention the model name do you think when they get your agreement they will give you a cheaper model? they bury most necessary information that customer would want to know under glamorous words and terms that has little importance for the customer. I appreciate your honest advice.
Nice!
That's the trouble with this industry....too many service providers out-right lieing and excessively padding the bill.....besides the "other" problem of being technically deficient in their analysis.....this happens all too often in this biz. Found out that self-learning and self-doing ( where we can) is the best approach. Most common "first-failure" for newer units.... is a simple case of bad capacitor...and a lot of folks are charging upwards of $400 or more to fix this. Totally outlandish and criminal.
I think they know their craft and use that knowledge to rob you.Fix some really pricey part of the unit and while no one is looking fix the real problem a $20 capacitor.
Besides the warranty and money, the guy might have thought the motor was bad and would have been shocked when a new one made the same noise. A lot of guessing going on out there.
Yes. Too little troubleshooting and too much shotgunning replacement parts, usually expensive, high markup items, too!
My bet is the same crook moved the fan blade from its original location. Consider this no noise for over a year , all of a sudden noise. That fan blade was moved or the set screw was loosen so over time the blade would move
I think that many HVAC companies like to perpetuate the myth that these units are very complex/complicated and are beyond the capability of any DIY'er to understand, let alone repair. That's just not true. If you have any HVAC problems, chances are you can find a simple solution in youtube. My own journey started when our HVAC guy wanted several hundred dollars to replace a capacitor. I did some fast and easy research and replaced it myself for about $27. It was one of the easiest repair jobs I ever did ... for anything.
Awesome bro. Thanks for sharing!
So cool you saved them so much money! Do you have any videos on putting insulation on the AC line? Mine is literally on the ground on the part outside the house. Under the house looks fine. Looking for tips on how to fix the outside one.
I should do a video on that. Home Depot sells insulation for pipes with an adhesive. Very easy to replace! Stay tuned for that video 👍🏼
@@diyhvacguy great! I'll be on the lookout!
Wow!
You did good for them ! Even though , it's a pretty noisy unit 😮 Mine is old and about dead and super quiet still.
When its dead it will be SUPER quiet.
@@mikejohn0088 😂🤣😂🤣👍 Very true 🤣
Start calling the names of these HVAC con artists and alert the public not to use these bully scammers.
Scammers aka parts changers become sales techs with no conscious.
Sad that Lenox has resorted to scamming their customers!
Yes…Lenox!! They are responsible, if they are letting scam artists use their products!
Your good man for helping people out
I really like your channel I have watched several of them lots of information. I do all of my own work from electrical to major plumbing jobs, I would like to replace my HVAC system with a 3 ton 16 seer American standard unit. The only problem I see is where would a DIY person buy the equipment without a Tax ID number and a account with a distributor? Any help is appreciated.
We offer a service where we help walk you through doing your own replacement. You can find that at Patreon.com/diyhvacguy Hope we can help you out! Cheers
That’s why everyone ac believes all techs are scam artist! Good work!
Correction everyone knows they are con artists .
Are you sure that it was the position of fan blade that made the difference? May be it was not secured well and the blade was wabbling.... Just failed to see how position of the blade made the difference...
I am 100% sure that was it. It was tight before. I have heard through the comments that the position that it sits on the shaft affects how much air is moved. I’m not sure on the science but she said it has been working perfect fine since
Scam everywhere man, here in Fresno ca “Allbritten, Air Conditioning and Heating” scammed me but I fought back and at the end they said I don’t have to pay anything. The ac condenser was leaking where the freon goes in and out. My was $2600 to get the freon out and put new one back in. He said the warranty only cover the little part that was leaking but not the labor and freon. I told him I want to talk to his boss and 15 minutes after he came back and said “the boss said no cost to you”. Wtf! It’s common sense man, that little part right there was still under warranty and it broke that why there was a leak. The warranty has to cover everything. I found out the next day when the new guy came and he said they only take suck the freon out and put it back in and if it’s not enough they might just added.
That's because this field guy is on commission = he gets a % of the unnecessary fees he collects from those he robs.
However, when the plan hits a snag, the boss "fixes everything", looks like the good guy and the plan continues to the next victim customer.
Always take a reading on the airflow first, that way you have a baseline of your condenser airflow! Moving the blade up and down will change the scoopong effect that a pitched blade has in the shroud . I see it all the time, guys replace a motor and dont mark the position or take a reading if possible, and now the blade is either too far out or too far in and the head pressure is to high on initial startup!
How could you verify that the blades are in their optimal position?
By takin the initial reading,it worked just fine before it broke!
I guess I should have explained my question more thoroughly.
If I bought a house and I wanted to be sure that the fan hasn't been moved, how would I verify that it's in the optimal position. Thanks
@@michaelpinkston4628 You woukd measure with an Anemometer, its really only needed for prop style fans! As far as your furnace, they are centered in the housing! As fare as a condenser fan on the outdoor unit, you would need to take pressure readings, and see where the sweet spot or optimal position,if its to low the pressure will be higher,if its to high, the pressure will be higher!
Bearing going bad ? noise could be back in a bit ? hopefully not
My bet the installer rigged that knowing that it would result in a service call.
That was better than the guy who wanted to charge me 350 dollars back in 2015 to “try” to put in a capacitor to see if it would fix my bad compressor. Told him to leave. That was the worst $80 service call I ever had lost and I still didn’t get an answer as to what the issue to my unit was.
Let me guess at 0:19, this issue is going to be the fan cap missed wired. Am I right, lets see the rest.
Greedy, HVAC companies it's crazy
Can anyone recommend a Freon scale please thank you in advance :).
amzn.to/3XrVjS8
Only $600 in Texas it would’ve been at least $700 you fail to realize that companies have overhead expenses service fee, truck maintenance, insurance, knowledge…. 😂
For real 😂 these diy clowns are getting out of control. It's freaking 2024 , living, food, gas cost a 100x more but they want a cap changed for 50$ and still bitch about
These same ppl pay mechanics 200 bucks for oil and filter and cry about it, buy the value meal and cry about it
The warranty might no have covered the labor
Even if the motor needed to be swapped, the labor for that should not be $600. That's less than an hour's work, even with the drive there. Most lawyers don't even make that kind of money.
The parts warranty would cover a new motor from the manufacturer. But the tech has to go diagnose the failed motor, leave and drive to lennox to get the replacment, drive back to the job, replace the motor, and then go back to lennox to give them the failed motor so they can process the warranty claim. @bnasty267 This “1 hour job” turns into a tad bit longer than that. Let’s not forget all the overhead that business is paying for that van to be on the road for 3-4 hours doing this one job. It’s easy to play hvac business owner until you see the reality. Btw, I think this was a case of misdiagnosing a bad motor, either ignorance or inexperience, not a scam.
HVAC installers want to charge me 6680 dollars to install a 15 seer heat pump (comfort maker) with electric backup heat. They won't replace ducts. In your opinion is this a fair amount to pay them?.
That sounds pretty fair to me. Heat pumps are definitely more expensive, but around here that job could be closer to 8-9k
Does that work for an R22 system? Haha, haha.
Why are there scammers in HVAC? It seems so easy to make a good living?
🤷🏻♂️ greed I suppose
Unfortunately when you are honest you end up out of business
Not true. Definitely more difficult but not impossible
Of well was wrong.
Why didn't you show what you did to fix it??
I did.
I dropped the fan blade down on the shaft further and that fixed the noise
Yes.... now I know not to call black diamond .....
( just like my window company said "the glass is not covered by the warranty"..( for broken seal ) ..kroll...)
bunch of bul_____ ⁉
Don't buy Lennox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "GOAT" ...in HVAC
