      I have to agree. I have limited space in which to quilt so most of mine are very small,, usually measuring 5 ft x 5 ft maximum. I love the quilts you've made for your bed Karen. Thank you for coming up with new topics. ~~Lynne

    I’ve learned all I need is a solid colored bedspread that covers the mattress. Then I put my quilt on top. It doesn’t matter if it’s not exactly the size to cover the mattress. I even change out the quilts or fold them as bed runners at the foot.

    I make queen or king bedspread size only. If any fabric left over 1/2 yd or larger only. The rest of leftovers go to best friend in Florida. When there are leftovers are enough it's time to design throws. Average size for queen is 110" square or larger, king is 120" x 130" at times larger. A spread must cover/ tuck over pillows. Since i have no computer ( or know how to use one!), i can't get anything you put up for our use. I thank you for your timely, positive & so useful for quilters everywhere.

I've made all the bed size quilts my family can use so now I make only lap quilts for a retirement community and a children's charity, and I'm always wondering if what I've made is the appropriate size. Sizes given for those online REALLY vary ! Lap quilt sizes for wheelchair-bound people would also be grand.

This will be a quilt to snuggle under on the couch while watching tv. My sister is, at his very time, watching your binding tutorials because I told her they are the best of all the tutorials for learning about how to create binding and the different ways to attach the binding to the quilt. Thank you so much Karen, for you excellent teaching ability. With regard to a video about different quilt sizes, I say definitely yes and thank you. Looking forward to your next video.

  • @KimberlyNichols
    @KimberlyNichols Před 2 lety

    Great video, Karen! This is the main reason I very rarely surprise anyone with a quilt. I like a lot of drape on the sides and our bed is quite high off the ground, but that's not always the case. I don't want to waste all that extra time and fabric making something that will annoy the recipient. And it's worse if the quilt is too small!
    The size of the person/couple using the quilt can make a big difference too!
    Then of course, there's colour/style preferences to consider.
    There are just too many variables and too much time and money involved to surprise anyone with a quilt. I'd rather discuss it with the recipient in advance. Gifting a quilt they helped customize is so much more fun and less stressful.

    This is a very valuable topic. You mentioned car quilts, many years ago there was a pattern called a "Quillow". I found they were perfect for the car and because they folded into a pillow when not in use as a cover they took up very little space in the car. We keep them in the car in winter for emergency use and in the summer for the air conditioner chill. Great in the camper too! I still make them every so often.

    Holy mackerel there are a lot of quilt sizes out there. In the early days of IKEA in Canada people were often frustrated that the sizes were different than US sizes. Today with the XL, the RV and the super sizes, it's so important to double check the size so that you know that it will fit the bed that you quilt is destined for. Don't forget to grab the download with the different drape sizes. Enjoy. Visit www.birchliving.com/quilts to get $400 off your Birch mattress plus two free pillows! Hi Karen could you please give suggested measurements for an end of bed through, we find particularly on frosty nights our toes get cold and just need a little extra warmth across the foot of our bed that's a queen size. Blessings everyone.

    This was super useful. I would LOVE a video on the perfect size quilt for cuddling on the couch. I’m planning a wedding gift for my friend and am very insecure on the right size to make.

    Thank you Karen, you are a wealth of knowledge and I thank you for sharing. Yes please make another video on car and sofa cuddle quilts. I usually make the quilts as per the pattern but have not thought about if they are the right size. Be safe and stay healthy.

    This is a very timely topic for me. I bought a quilt kit that is only 77"X77". I have decided to add 10" blocks to both sides and the bottom. I need to consider where the big center block will be with the additions. But more importantly, the size of throw quilts is important to me. I see really beautiful quilts posted that look like they are 40X60 and I wonder who they are for. I have relatives that range in height from 6'5" to 5'1" and am thinking that the same size quilt will not do for them. I also have military veterans that have that wide range of heights. A local group that uses quilts to honor veterans wants them all to be 50X60 for fairness and economical reasons. That doesn't work for me. So, I would love to hear your thoughts on lap/throw quilts.
