    Now, if you see a container train in the underground, THAT would be a sight to see.

    • @Ben31337l
      @Ben31337l Před 9 lety +16

      Containers are mainly out of gauge for the tube network.
      As in, the containers wont fit in the tunnel.

    • @boleamj
      @boleamj Před 9 lety +6

      Ben 1337 What about if containers were tube shaped? ;D

    • @Ben31337l
      @Ben31337l Před 9 lety +2

      Then it wouldn't be ISO containers.
      But that's a rather good idea, I really do wish that there were more dedicated train routes around London which would divert passengers away from entering the London Underground.
      For example, imagine this: You enter England on HS1, but what happens when you enter the london area, is the train is split at several parts to head up the particular mainlines you chose to go on, therefore, you wouldn't need to change trains to enter parts of the UK which were previously inaccessible on that particular train and thus, need to travel on the LU to reach the terminal that you want to get to.
      At the moment, London really does separate the rest of the UK from the rest of the European network, therefore focing people that want to go into europe to travel on LU, which puts HUGE stress on the system whcih is hugely outdated.
      I think it's either that or retrofitting the LU as a whole with a larger loading gauge to fit double decker passenger stock which would multiply the passenger capacity by a lot which would reduce the pressure on LU to run on time.
      The UK really does depend on the LU to run a lot, a bit too much if you ask me.

    • @boleamj
      @boleamj Před 9 lety +2

      Now, the main problem of what you are writting here, is that, to do that entirely new system, that would suppose an ENORMOUS invest, new tunnels, or remake the existing ones, not to talk about building new stock...
      If it was me, I'll go for the second option, wich is, as I said, to remake and expand the existing tunnels, now, the problem is that you can't do that on the standard gauge LU lines, as they were made from cutoffs.
      It is really funny that some of the LU lines are in fact, ex-BR or ex-GER... I would suggest reconnecting Stratford with Epping forcing the Central Line to terminate there for example, as in fact, it is quite annoying sometimes to go through the tube system, something like expanding the "Overground system" and replacing it for the LU system would be quite usefull indeed (where possible), should the system connect the north, south, east and west of London.
      I'm sorry I can't add some more examples, as I just lived for 3 months in London and travelled between Epping and the city.
      Good night from Spain!

    • @Ben31337l
      @Ben31337l Před 9 lety +2

      I'm not sure about the first option, a ring railway around London would certainly help relieve pressure off the LU.
      The LU serves almost 1.265 billion passengers annually and the LU is actually pretty stressed with the passenger numbers as it is.
      So having additional capacity on the trains would really help a lot.
      But the problem is, expanding the LU are many of the older tunnels which were laid using the cut and cover method where the track would need to be lowered in order to have double decker trains, which would cause all of the pipes to be re-routed and huge disruption everywhere.
      The reason I said connecting the north with the rest of Europe would be beneficial because currently you need to travel on the LU to get anywhere in the UK and vice versa so having a ring railway connect all of the lines together would relieve pressure off the LU so that people commuting to / within London use the LU system rather then people arriving, taking the LU to another terminal station and departing again to somewhere else.
      Also, good night boleamj.

    Its not a really a freight train, its an engineer's train for carrying ballast and sleepers for track maintenance. The wagons are being propelled by two battery locomotives, which can draw their power from the tracks, or use power stored in their massive batteries when the track current is switched off.

    The London Underground is a passenger transit system. Commercial Freight does not use the underground and the only non-passenger trains are usually engineering trains and are usually run at night or when sections of lines are closed and very rarely during operational hours. The only time I have seen one was at Stratford station passing through on a mainline train.

    On a surface portion of the Chicago (CTA) system, interchange freight ("goods", as you British say) in the form of coal was hauled at one time with electric locomotives. The stations affected would have a gauntlet track to allow clearance by the larger coal cars ("wagons). Ancient history now...LOL

  • @ajdown
    @ajdown Před 14 lety +1

    @soundseeker63 only a small percentage of the Underground is actually under the ground - there's plenty above ground and yes, they do use ballast just like the "normal" railway on those sections. To get the ballast from the depot to the worksite may well mean it goes through the central underground section - just like in these video. The yellow things on the end are battery/electric so they can work when the power is switched off - essential when maintenance is going on!

    @LikeMindedIncident Actually, I think the reason the maintenance trains always have a loco at each end is so for manouverability; like the standard passenger trains, so they can be driven from either end. Remember, if they're repairing or replacing track they might need to switch direction anywhere. Mind you, I've often been tempted to jump onto a passing freight at a main line station myself, when my train doesn't show up for ages.

The law exists in the US because 2 mile long trains don't really mix (traffic wise and safety wise) with short commuter trains.

The maintainance crews that work in the 4 or 5 hours the system shuts down need to get materials close to where they are working while the network is live.
